1. This project and these instructions have been written for
someone who has experience making soap and knows
the potential dangers due to working with sodium
hydroxide. It will not outline safety methods of working
with dangerous chemicals, it is simply a soap recipe for
advanced soapmakers
2. In separate containers, measure by weight your water
and your lye. Gradually stir in small amounts of the lye
in the water until the lye is dissolved completely. Set
aside in a safe place and allow cooling.
3. Measure all of your oils and butters and place in a
large bowl. NOTE: This will be the bowl you will stick
blend in, so make sure it will be large enough.
4. Warm oils in microwave or over low heat until melted.
Set aside to cool.
5. Pour .5 ounce of the oils in a beaker.
6. Add 1/2 tsp. of Bath Bomb Red Powder Color to one
of the beakers.
7. Check temperatures of the lye water and then of the
oil/butter mixture. When both are about the same
temperature-approximately 120F, you are ready to
mix them together.
8. Carefully stick blend until the soap reaches a light

trace. Take the stick blender out of the mixture and
place it on a safe protected place on the counter.
REMEMBER: There is active lye on the blender.
9. By hand, using a spatula, add the Apple Jack n
Peel. Mix in well.
10. Carefully separate the mixture into 2 bowls to add
color. Separate into equal parts.
11. Add Bath Bomb Red to one mixture. Using a spatula,
mix the color in well. When your red color is
completely mixed you can began pouring your soap.
12. Began to layer white then the red (the layers do not
have to be completely even).
13. Evenly sprinkle a layer of the sparkle mica powder.
Then repeat step 12, then 13 again. Lastly use the
last color to top off your soap. At this time you are
able to play with the top of the soap to give it any
design that you desire.
14. Sprinkle a thin layer of the copper mica on the top
for extra glimmer.
15. Carefully insulate the sides of the loaf with towels.
After it has set up some, lightly cover the top as well.
16. After 24 hours, you can unmold the loaf and cut the
soap into 1 inch slices. Allow the soap to cure for 4-6
weeks before using. Check the pH to be sure it is at
a skin-safe level.

DIRECTIONS:
1. If you are making these products for sale, good
manufacturing practices recommend you wear a
hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a
clean apron.
2. Place bottom half of 2-piece mold on a cookie sheet.
This will give the mold stability if it needs to be moved.
3. In a plastic beaker, melt 1.5 oz. of clear soap. This
should only take about 30 seconds.
4. Cut the black soap color cube into 4 parts. Place one of
the pieces into the clear melted soap. Stir until color is
completely melted. Place in microwave for about 10-15
seconds if color is not dissolved entirely.
5. Pour about a 1 inch circle into the bottom of each round
soap cavity. Let the soap harden.
6. Weigh 4 oz. of clear soap and cut into chunks. Place in
glass measuring cup. Heat in microwave until soap has
completely melted.
7. Cut the Stained Glass Lemon Lime Soap cube into 4
parts. Place one part into the clear soap and stir until
the color has completely dissolved. If a deeper shade
is desired, add a small amount at a time until this color
is achieved.
8. Before pouring this color, the soap temperature must be
checked. Once the temperature is at or below 125F,
it can be poured.
9. Spritz the black soap in the cavities with rubbing
Project Level: Intermediate
Estimated Time: 2 Hours
Yields: 24 - 4oz Bars
alcohol. This will help each soap layer stick together.
Then, pour the lemon lime soap over the black until
there is about a 1 3/4 inch circle of color.
10. Spritz top of soaps again with alcohol and let soap
harden
11. For the nal layer, cut up the entire 2 lb. tray of white
soap. Place soap in a large glass measuring cup and
heat in microwave until all soap is completely melted.
Remove and stir to make sure soap has melted.
12. Add 1 oz. of Dragons Blood fragrance oil and stir
until blended in.
13. Check that soap temperature is at or below 125F
before pouring. If soap is too hot, the color that was
previously poured will bleed into the white layer.
14. Spritz colored soap generously with rubbing alcohol.
Pour soap to just below the top of the cavity. Spritz
with alcohol and let soap set up.
15. Spritz top of white soap generously with alcohol.
Place the top of the silicone mold over the bottom
and make sure the top and bottom are securely
fastened.
16. Slightly reheat the remaining white soap if necessary
and pour soap into the top of the mold cavity. Spritz
with alcohol to remove any surface bubbles. Let all
soaps completely harden.
17. NOTE: To prevent leaking into the other cavities,
make sure soap is as cool as possible before pouring.
18. When soaps have completely hardened, carefully
remove from mold. Trim the small piece off the tops,
if necessary, so the eyeballs are completely round.
19. Repeat above steps to make the other colored
eyeballs. Care should be taken when using the Neon
Tutti Frutti color bar. DO NOT PUT THIS COLOR IN
THE MICROWAVE. Cut small pieces of this cube and
stir into the hot soap.
20. Packaging Suggestion: Use Crystal Clear Cello Bags,
hot pink crinkle paper and matching curling ribbons.

soap to get hard only takes a few min.
12. Melt 2 oz. white melt and pour in microwave safe
dish on low 30 second bursts until completely melted

As the weather begins to turn colder and the outdoor craft
fairs and farmers markets wind down, the busiest time for
many soap makers has reached a close. Fall is in the air
and many of us nd ourselves with extra time on our hands.
Take a small breather (you deserve it) then jump right back
into the groove by using this downtime to your advantage.
NETWORK. Who better to talk to about soap making than
other soapers? Dont think of other soap makers as your
rivals but rather as your competitive allies. They are the
people who understand your work, can answer your
questions, understand your objectives and can help with
troubleshooting. The greatest advantage of networking is
that it brings people with the same interests together and
builds friendships.
You do not have to travel outside your home to nd
networking opportunities. Just hop on the internet.
Facebook is overowing with soap making groups of
various types; cold process, hot process, melt and pour,
liquid soap making and so many more. Use Facebooks
search tool to search for the key words that interest you.
Take advantage of the abundance of varied information
that is shared by joining a few. If chatting is not your
thing, there is no foul for just reading and absorbing the
knowledge of others in your eld.
LEARN A NEW TECHNIQUE. Is there a new swirl design
or soap additive that you have been itching to try?
Nows your chance. Take advantage of your downtime
by experimenting. If you are lost for new ideas, head
over to Youtube where you will nd a plethora of soap
making videos. When learning a new skill a visual is often
preferred. Enjoy spending an afternoon or two watching
tutorials, walkthroughs, and guides to help you get your

You could also spend some time in your soap room playing
with new ideas, additives, colorants and the like. Make
small batches as not all will turn out the way you expect.
There is never a failure when making soap because the
end products all have the same results, soap cleans.
MODIFY YOUR WEB PRESENCE. If your business does not
already have a dedicated location on the internet, now
is the time. Current and potential customers do not know
what you are up to unless you tell them. Give your followers
something to become excited about. Maybe you are not
ready to take the leap into managing your own website.
Not to worry because there are many other means of web
communication that can help create a buzz about your
products.
A web log (blog) is one of the easiest steps to take with social
media. If you have an internet connection and something
to say, head over to Blogger and within minutes you will
be up and running. What a blog can do for you is provide
you a place on the web to share information, interact with
other people, stimulate conversation and show off your
beautiful soap images. In addition, Facebook offers you
a similar means of communicating socially by building a
Facebook page. With over 500 million in one central web
location, your audience is built in. Lastly, if you do have
a website, take advantage of your downtime by sprucing
it up. Are your products and pricing up to date? Is your
color scheme aesthetically pleasing? Is everything spelled
correctly? A professional looking website is a direct
reection of your company.
BE INSPIRED. Enjoy the crisp fall weather and the changing
colors of the foliage. The beauty of the great outdoors is
one of the nest inspirations for the creative mind. Bring
along a camera to document the trip. Once back at your
soap studio, create a soap inspiration board with the
images. A visual image is much easier to work with than
just a memory. If staying indoors is more to your liking, sit
back and enjoy perusing over a fashion magazine. The
colorful images, patterns and graphics are sure to peak
your interest. And dont ignore the advertisements. They
are created by graphic designers to jump off the page
and garner your attention. Isnt that the same reaction you
want from customers who are looking at your products? Its
quite easy to get stuck in creative blocks and sometimes
even harder to get out of them. Look at the world around
you with an open mind and wide eyes to nd your way
back to the creative you.
Maximizing your downtime is not only a great way to
refresh your mind, but it is the perfect occasion to breathe
new life into your business. Each minute you focus on
experimenting, networking, exploring and moving your
business forward will come back to you two-fold.

BUSINESS ARTICLE:
MAXIMIZE YOUR DOWNTIME
24 HANDMADE MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 201 4
Halloween marks the beginning of holiday trends and gift
shopping. What is your business doing to capitalize on the
season?
Since buyer mentality prevails during this time many
businesses make the bulk of their revenue from now until
January 1st. Here are some marketing strategies to help
you boost sales and offer customers a little fun and a lot of
motivation to buy.
CREATE PRODUCTS FOR EVERY BUDGET.
Smart retailers develop gift ideas to t small budgets and ll
many gift-shopping needs: soaps in shapes that celebrate
the season; fragrances with themed names and labeling;
and fun little do-dads for under ten (even ve) dollars. The
small price tag may inspire shoppers to purchase many
of these items for parties and token gifts so dont be shy
about creating a good bargain.
OFFER HOLIDAY PACKAGES.
Pre-packaged gift bundles are a hot item because they
take the thinking and the work out of buying. Choose your
most popular items and pre-package gifts in a creative
way. Come up with fun names for your gift packages and
remind your customers of the need to buy for teachers,
carpool moms and dads, and other important people who
make their lives easier.
SUGGEST OTHER PRODUCTS.
Does your shopping cart offer the option to upsell at check
out? If the customer purchases your Witch on a Broom
soap they may love your Enchanting Brew perfume as
well. Have your developer program pop ups designed to
suggest comparable items and entice your customers to ll
their shopping carts to the brim!
OFFER VOLUME DISCOUNTS.
You may want to add an even greater incentive to ll the
cart by giving customers discounts on multiple product
purchases. For example, offer 10% off on orders over $30
and increase discounts as they spend more. Or give them
a percentage off when they purchase ve or more of one
item, and so on. People will push to get to the next discount
level and walk away in appreciation of a great bargain.
CREATE A CLUB.
Membership programs are extremely protable and
also create customer loyalty and longevity. A soap
and fragrance of the month club will have customers
anticipating their next automatic shipment. These programs
work best when you give signicant discounts in exchange
for a long-term buying commitment of your products. There
is something special about each and every month of the
year, so dont limit your seasonal items to the fall and
winter holidays.
ADD STYLE TO YOUR SITE.
The human mind thinks in pictures so they sell far more
than words do. Boring product images can only go so far;
make your website a selling machine giving visitors an
extraordinary visual experience. Show creative uses for
your products: place card holders, stocking stuffers, gift
toppers, and more. Insert lifestyle images and videos that
demonstrate the joy that your products bring to the lives of
many. Remember, video will do amazing things for your
search engine optimization as well!
Dont try to do everything at once. Choose the strategies
that most resonate with you and make sure to market the
heck out of them. Have fun with creative posts on Facebook
and dont forget about the incredible power of Pinterest
and Instagram. I have seen businesses become successful
overnight (literally) because of one image gone viral.

5 WAYS TO BOOST CUSTOMER
SPENDING THIS SEASON
25 HANDMADE MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 201 4
The demand in the world market for herbal cosmetics is on an
incline. Botanical formulations have always attracted attention
because of their perceived benets and comparatively lesser
side effects than synthetic counterparts. The connection
between beauty and botanicals is a natural one since herbs
and spices have been used in maintaining and enhancing
human beauty for centuries.
Spices are one of the most widely used botanical additives
found in foods, cosmetics and dental products. The U.S. Food
and Drug Administration does not regulate spices, meaning
they often are not noted on food labels, making them possibly
the most difcult allergen to identify or avoid. According to
rough estimates, spice allergy is responsible for 2 percent of
food allergies.
Herbs and spices are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)
by the FDA, at least at concentrations commonly found in
foods; however, many herbs, spices, and their biologically
active components, are being investigated for potential
disease prevention and treatment at concentrations exceeding
those commonly used in ingestibles.
Common spice allergy triggers include cinnamon and garlic,
but can range from black pepper to vanilla. Many spice
blends contain up to 18 individual spices, and the hotter the
spice the greater the chance for allergic reactions.
Since spices are derived from plant sources, it makes sense
that certain spices are related to one another, as well as to
pollens and other plant-based foods. These relationships can
lead to cross-reactivity, meaning that an allergy to specic
pollens might lead to an allergy to its related spices. The
following list shows the cross-reactivity between common
spices, pollens and other foods:
Oregano and thyme
Onion and garlic
Paprika and mace
Mustard and rapeseed (canola)
Mustard and tree nuts
Sesame and tree nuts
Cottonseed and walnut
Birch pollen and various spices
Mugwort pollen and various spices
Celery and various spices
Carrot and various spices
Fenugreek (often used in curry) and peanut
As a cosmetics formulator, it is important to recognize the
relationship between botanicals and spices in regards to
known allergens to help reduce the risk of allergic reactivity to
your products. While spices can effectively provide a unique
nished product with a multitude of benets, they can also
increase the risk of a skin reaction, or worse. If you have intent

BREAK THROUGH STEREOTYPES. Putting a lighthearted
spin on traditionally serious activities can be another
effective way to break through the stereotypes that can
hinder connections, either due to a persons age, gender,
title, or their relationship with your business. Instead of a
golf outing, for example, which tends to create a sense of
separateness, reserve a small block of time at a local driving
range. Let the team spend some time hitting balls and easing
into a sense of comfortthen, add a silly spin that fosters
group interaction. For example, take turns blind folding
each golfer so that he or she must rely on the instructions of
others to identify where to swing, and aim.
You dont have to throw a budget-busting bash to recognize
the people who are pivotal to your business, but its
important to your business on so many levels. Not does

youll likely nd that productivity increases, customers are

arise are resolved more seamlessly.

CREATIVE WAYS TO BUILD
RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR
BUSINESS V.I.P. s
By Stephanie Taylor Christensen
Happy customers are key to keeping your business aoat
but creating a sense of unity among the other VIPs in your
business (like employees, and vendors) can be the real glue
that allows you to deliver exceptional products, promotions,
and service. Here are a few simple teambuilding ideas
business owners of any size (and budget) can put into action
to promote an internal culture of teamwork and goodwill.
GET TO THEIR HEARTS THROUGH THEIR STOMACHS.
Traditional appreciation lunches and dinners can feel
awkward but they become an excellent ice breaker when
you allow your attendees to get creative in the kitchen
with your own spin on Cupcake Wars. Start the event
as a mini-mixer while entertaining guests with upbeat
bakery demonstrations from a local chef that invite crowd
participation. Then, deliver the surprise news that your
guests are the real stars of the show! Place attendees into
small teams, provide each with the same base cupcake
ingredients, and task them to get creative with toppings,
additional avors, and presentation for a fun, lighthearted
dessert showdown.
BE A CHEERING SECTION. You dont have to live in a city with
a big name sports team to reap the team building benets
attending sporting events can offer. Reserve a section of lawn
space or seating to facilitate interaction, and conversation.
Try to arrange a special shout out to your group with
the event announcer, or an image of your team over the
JumboTron to facilitate a sense of team pride. Prepare
a goody bag for each of your attendees that showcases
your brand appropriate to the event. (For example, a
branded mini handheld motorized fan or insulated drink
holder would be a great compliment to an event held on a
hot sunny day).
SUPPORT A COMMUNITY CAUSE. Ask your employees, top
clients and vendors for their input on a local community
non-prot or fundraising event they would be interested in
supporting as a team on behalf of your business. Develop
unifying apparel, like shirts, hats, or pins that create a
sense of same-ness among participants (and promotes
your brand at the event itself). If the events a success, make
it a quarterly activity for different local groups. Not only is
such participation a great way to instill your small businesses
presence in the community, it gives those important to your
business the opportunity to connect on a human level, by
learning what causes various individuals champion-- and
why.

annual bottom line.
INVESTMENT
Consider using some of your prot to
improve your facilities and equipment.
These could include better ofce space,
computer and software upgrades,
more ofce supplies, new furniture,
and other tools to increase operating
efciencies. Review your insurance
policies and make sure the coverages
are adjusted to any changes in
potential liabilities.
If your sales outlook is favorable and
you can handle the storage, build up
your inventory of raw materials and
nished products. Youll be in a better
position to respond to unexpected
sales growth and demand spikes due
to holidays.
If things are really going well, think
about giving back to the community.
Its not only a good idea, it will likely
benet you in the long run. Sponsor
a youth sports team and put your
company name and logo on the
uniforms. Participate and donate to
local groups devoted to community
development and enhancement.
By Geoffrey Michael
There may be no better problem to
face than trying to gure out what to
do with your company prots. The
answer depends to a great degree on
how your business is organized. This
article focuses on small businesses
that operate as sole proprietorships or
limited liability companies.
Every business is unique and what
you do with your money is obviously
a personal decision. The following
information represents a top-level
review of some of the options you might
consider.
PAY YOURSELF.
One temptation, especially at the
beginning, is to pour much of what you
make back into the business. That can
work for awhile if you have adequate
savings to live on, but the goal should
be to break out of that mode as rapidly
as possible. If you dont, youll fool
yourself into believing that your business
is successful when it actually may not
be. Thats because your salary isnt
factored into the cost of doing business.
Pay yourself at least what you need
to get by, and lay the groundwork for
paying what youre really worth. You
should be able to increase your pay
at least as much as your growth rate
without impacting your bottom line.
Start a tax-deferred savings plan as
soon as possible and maximize your
contributions.
PAY DOWN DEBT
In todays low interest rate environment,
it may not make sense to pay down
debt more rapidly than the minimum
needed. If youre carrying a high
interest rate on an old loan, nows the
time to renegotiate that loan with better
terms. That will allow you to reduce
the principal more quickly and perhaps
shorten the payback period.
When analyzing how much to allocate
to debt payments, its important to
consider the tax implications of each
option youre considering. While
paying down debt early will reduce the
total interest expense, you should focus
on what impact that will have on your

technology programs and also cofounded an aviation consulting rm.
you can pay them on a commission
basis to limit your upfront exposure
If you cant hire someone full time
based on this analysis, consider hiring
part-time help or outsourcing to a
contract labor pool
Also consider the intangible benets
of hiring that may be hard to quantify
in dollar terms. Youll be under less
pressure and have more time to focus
on customer service, marketing, quality
improvement, and other efforts to
attract more attention to your business.
REORGANIZATION
Many businesses start out as sole
proprietorships, but nd that this form
of business isnt the best over the long
run. Two of the primary drivers behind
changing the form are tax and liability
issues. There are several advantages
of incorporation including the use of
a custom scal year, zeroing out the
companys income, awarding stock
options, deferring compensation, and
staggering bonuses.
Over time you can change your
form of business to maximize prots
and minimize taxes and risk. Take
advantage of this to the greatest extent
possible.
SUMMARY
Consult with an accountant or
tax attorney before you make
consequential decisions about how to
use your prot or change your form of
business. Everything you do with your
money has tax consequences and you
want to make sure theyre factored into
the decision-making process.
Finally, why not use some of that prot
to reward yourself? Take that vacation
youve dreamed about but havent had
time for. If you have employees, put
something extra in their next paycheck
and think about a prot-sharing
arrangement for them. And dont
forget to stash some cash in a rainy
day fund. You never know when you
might need to dip into your reserves.
EXPANSION
If expansion is part of your business
plan, prot is a practical source of
nancing. It doesnt cost you anything
and doesnt increase your debt
load. Before taking that approach,
reevaluate your plan and business
projections to make sure its worth
more investment. If interest rates are
low, a bank loan may be a better
option. Analyze your cash ow and
tax consequences as part of your
decision-making process.
Another option is to acquire an existing
business that complements yours. The
combination will likely lead to greater
efciencies and a lower overall cost of
doing business. It will also eliminate
whatever competition existed between
the two companies.
HIRING
If you decide to expand, youre going
to need help to facilitate that growth.
Before taking that step, take a hard
look at how youre spending your time.
If some or most of your day is taken up
by tasks that could be delegated, that
time could be better spent on critical
tasks and big picture thinking.
For small business owners, hiring
people is a major decision that requires
thoughtful consideration. Heres a
general checklist for determining how
it will impact you nancially:
Review estimated future sales volume
and how this will affect your time and
ability to meet all your commitments
Clearly dene the expected tasks
and responsibilities of the new job
Calculate the amount of revenue the
new employee will add to your bottom
line
Calculate the total expense of hiring,
training, paying, benets, taxes, and
providing workspace and equipment
for the new employee
If the generated revenue exceeds
the expense, and your expected cash
ow is sufcient, thats a signal that
you can afford to hire
If youre hiring someone for sales,

Nancy Asked:
I am new to melt and pour and I
was wondering if this colored the
entire bar and has glitters in it or if
this just adds glitter to an already
colored soap.
WSP Staff Answered:
Great question! All of our glitters
just add glitter to the soap when
added. The glitters do not color the
soap. So you can add them into
your soap after youve melted it, or
just on top.
Rosa Darlene Asked:
When using this glitter in CP soap
when do you add the glitter? At
trace? I noticed some said on top of
their soaps, what does that mean?
WSP Staff Answered:
Some people add the darker
colored glitters between layers.
Most use it sprinkled on top of the
bars just after the soap is poured in
the mold.
Heather Asked:
Will this glitter hold up in nail
polish? Is it approved to be used
that way?
Florence Page Answered:
This glitter is solvent resistant
which means it can be used in nail
polish.
