The hot and busy summer is coming to a close, time to get ready for a busy fall.
We have had a great summer here at the church filled with camps, mission trips, Vaca-
tion Bible School, trips, and great worship together.
Recently, I read Have A Little Faith, by Mitch Albom, and he told a story that
reminded me of the hard work we have all been doing.
The Reb once gave a sermon in which heaven and hell were shown to a man. In
hell, people sat around a banquet table, full of exquisite meats and delicacies. But their
arms were locked in front of them, unable to partake for eternity.
This is terrible, the man said. Show me heaven.
He was taken to another room, which looked remarkably the same. Another banquet
table, more meats and delicacies. The souls there also had their arms out in front of
them.
The difference was, they were feeding each other.
That is the way a church should look, feeding each other; when that happens,
weve come close to heaven!
As we get back into school mode I will be starting a sermon series called Offer
Them Christ. It is based on John Wesleys words in 1784 when he commissioned
Thomas Coke to go to America to ordain Francis Asbury and to spread the gospel. The story goes that as Coke was
boarding the ship to America he asked Wesley what he should say when he got here. Wesleys response was that he
should, offer them Christ. My sermon series will focus on how we offer the grace that Jesus gives us to those around us.
School is starting, vacations are over, it is a great time to be back in church. Bring a friend and join us for this series.

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11
so shall my word be that goes out from
my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I
sent it.
12
For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Isaiah 55:10-12 (NRSV)
I hope youre like me and have enjoyed spending the past few weeks reading through the parables of Jesus in
Matthew. Parables have always fascinated me. They are like poetry. In them we not only find meaning, but beauty. This is
one thing I have always appreciated about the Word of God. Our scriptures cannot be simplified to a single meaning. As
you know, two people can disagree over an interpretation and both might still be genuinely seeking God. Most likely, even
in their disagreement, they can learn from one another. This is true beauty. These words have been studied for thousands
of years, and every day we find new inspiration in their pages. Like poetry, scripture is much deeper than surface level. So
I challenge you, dont get caught on the surface and miss out on the wonders below. There is so much to discover as we
open ourselves to experiencing the Word in our lives.
God bless you all,
Trent

A MESSGE FROM BISHOP HUIE
A Pastoral Leter from Your Bishops
to the People of The United Methodist Church in Texas
July 17, 2014
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Today a humanitarian crisis is unfolding on our southern border with the arrival of tens of thousands of unaccompanied
children. Many of you have communicated with us about your heartfelt desire to provide compassionate care for the
unaccompanied children who are suffering in our midst. As bishops we have been conferencing with each other about
how the people of The United Methodist Church might respond in a manner that is most faithful to the gospel.
We have also been in conversation with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), community leaders, and
government officials. Our colleague, Bishop Jim Dorff, and other leaders in the Rio Texas Conference have just re-
turned from three days on the border assessing the situation and representing the gospel and the church and encour-
aging people in a Christ-like response.
Let us be guided by the Biblical witness of faith:
Jesus said, Let the little children to come to me for to such belong the kingdom of heaven. (Luke 18:15-16)
Jesus instructed us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe those in need, visit
the sick and those imprisoned. Then he said, When you have done it for one of the least of these brothers and
sisters of mine, you have done it for me. (Matthew 25:40)
We are to extend hospitality to strangers. (Romans 12:13; Hebrews 13:12)
We do not understand all that these children have experienced in their home countries or in their arduous journey to
our borders. We do know that their plight breaks the heart of God. Children are some of the most vulnerable members
of the global community. Many come seeking to survive. They all need our compassion and care. At a time of con-
cern about a struggling economy and national security, it is easy to give in to fear and to let that fear, rather than Gods
heart, shape our hearts and our response. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound
mind. (II Tim. 1:7). As followers of Christ, we have the power and wisdom of God to care for these unaccompanied
children.

As the Bishops of the United Methodist Conferences of Texas, we call on the people of The United Methodist Church
to:
Pray regularly for the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being and healing of these children and families, wis-
dom for our government officials, and peace for the countries from which these children have come;
Work with faith and community leadership to provide housing, life necessities, pastoral/spiritual care, and as stable
an environment as possible for these children and families while their long-term status is being resolved;
Be attentive to seeing Christ in the faces of these children;
Be alert for specific opportunities to offer ministries of compassion and care, which we will share as needs emerge.
In the words of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, Do all the good you can by all the means you can in
all the ways you can in all the places you can at all the times you can to all the people you can as long as ever you
can.
In the name and spirit of Christ, we join with you in Christian love for these children. God bless you.

Collections of Birthday Bags will continue!
We delivered 30 birthday bags to H.O.P.E. after our last Service Sunday.
They were so excited to receive these bags, and said it was a terrific idea.
So many of the families who come to H.O.P.E. for essential food are not able
to provide birthday celebrations for their children. These birthday bags allow
them to give their child something they may have never had. We want to
continue these collections so that this can be an ongoing addition offered to
H.O.P.E. clients. We ask for your continued support by supplying completely
- filled bags or supplies needed for this project. The following items are
needed: handled bags (plain or decorated, no larger than 13H x 5D x
13L); cake mix (with expiration date over 6 months out); frosting (with ex-
piration date over 6 months out); small birthday candles; one to two gifts
(suggestions at Missions table). Optional items: paper plates, napkins,
favors.
Back-to-School Shared Blessings
We are planning for Back-to-School. We will participate with Love INC
and our own TJR Adoption Project by collecting gently-used and new
school clothes, including new socks and underwear. You can bring your
contributions and place them in the blue barrel in the hallway by the Missions
bulletin board. Love INC is working with Hospice of East Texas Thrift Shop
and Wal-Mart again this year on Wednesday, August 13
th
and Thursday, Au-
gust 14
th
for families to do their shopping. If you would like to donate money
for this project, $35 will sponsor one child for both days and allow them
several outfits, new underwear and socks. Make checks to FUMC with Shared Blessings in memo space. Families
must apply to Love INC, and they will start processing applications in mid-July. Volunteers are needed at Love INC to
help process these applications, help with set-up, and to assist clients on shopping days. If you know of a deserving
family, please be sure to let them know to pick up an application at Love INC.
Thanks again for your help in feeding the children
There was a need for a hundred more bags of food to feed the children in the park over the weekend. Individuals and a
Sunday School class contributed the monetary funds to buy the food, and 18 church members showed up to help fill the
bags for another delivery to the parks on July 18
th
and July 25
th
. We couldnt have done it without you. We were also
able to deliver more food to the Food Bank.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
A very Special Thank You to all who participated in making VBS such a huge success! Though we did not know
what to expect with our first evening VBS, we were thrilled with the quality of spiritual formation that we were able to
impart in intimate class environments and with a higher level of family participation. We served 109 children! We also
successfully packed 75 boxes of fortified rice meals to serve the village of our sister church in India, and we have al-
most raised the funds to cover the cost of that! What a success! We have raised $1,800.00 and just have $600.00 to
go to meet our goal of $2,400.00. Thank you, church, for your dedication to Vacation Bible School and its mission!
