According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, rainfall in Port Hedland is quite variable but generally low.
The main periods of heavy weather are during summer and from May to J une. Most storms occur in the
summer, and occasionally there are cyclones as well.
For official weather reports, please go to the Bureau of Meteorology website or visit www.weatherzone.com.au.
Tidal conditions
LintechPort experiences a small tidal range, which at 2 m. Strong currents also exist off the coast, especially
during spring tides.
The height data for the lowest astronomical tide (LAT) are:
Mean high water spring1.5 m
Mean high water neap2 m
Maximum range2.5 m.
The maximum flood tide rate is approximately 1.5 knots. It flows in an easterly direction and ebbs in a north
westerly direction.
Vessels may request the current tide height by calling Lintech Port on VHF Channel 16.
Please also visit the Department of Transport, Marine section website for more information on tides and other
coastal data.
Arrival drafts
In order to minimise the effects of strong winds during transit of the channel and berthing, all vessels arriving in
LintechPort should:
Give the Harbourmaster 24 hours notice
Be properly ballasted.
The following table shows the minimum drafts for vessels entering port, based on the dead weight tonnage
(DWT). Please interpolate to calculate your exact draft requirement.
Vessel size (DWT) Forward draft (m) Aft draft (m)
Up to 10,000 2.0
No more than 0.6 m of the
propeller to be exposed
10,00020,000 2.02.5
No more than 0.6 m of the
propeller to be exposed
Vessels which do not meet these minimum draft requirements may have their berthing delayed.
Please inform the Harbourmaster if you have any difficulties meeting these draft requirements.
