HOW DO YOU WRITE A PARAGRAPH?

Rules of a Paragraph TO REMEMBER!


1) Do not start a sentence with BUT, AND, or
BECAUSE.
I like playing basketball. Because it is cool.

I like playing basketball because it is cool.
2) Do not start each new sentence on a new line.
Basketball is my favorite sport.
I am on the basketball team. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Basketball is my favorite sport. I am on the basketball team.

3) Indent the first line. (Leave space in front of your


first sentence).
My name is Marianne. I live in Gainesville.

4) Leave margins (space on both sides of your writing).
5) End each sentence with a period ( . ),question mark (
? ), or exclamation point ( ! ).
I like teaching at Battlefield XXXXXXXXXXXX
I like teaching at Battlefield. OR I like teaching at
Battlefield!
6) Begin each sentence with a capital letter.
i come to school by bus. XXXXX
I come to school by bus.

Parts of a Paragraph
Every paragraph has three parts:
OPENING/TOPIC SENTENCE - this is the main
idea of the paragraph (what it is about).
SUPPORTING/DETAIL SENTENCES - these give
details to tell more about the main idea. There
should be three or more supporting sentences.
CONCLUSION/CLOSING SENTENCE - this says
the main idea again, but in a new way.
Here is an example paragraph:
I really like movies. I watch movies
every day. My friends and I go to the cinema on
the weekend. I own over 50 movies on DVD and
video. Watching movies is something that I
really enjoy.
Find Parts of a Paragraph
Read these paragraphs and answer the
questions.
1) There are many reasons why people move.
Some people move because of a new job. Others
move because they want to live in a city with better
weather. Still others move because they want to
live somewhere cheaper. These are some reasons
why people move to new cities.

sending cards over the internet is also popular.

b. Birthday cards are the most popular kind of card.
c. It is important to send thank-you cards.
4) Read this paragraph and UNDERLINE the supporting
sentences.
The number of people using the Internet has grown very
fast. In 1983, there were 562 computers on the Internet. By
2000, there were 72.3 million computers on the Internet.
People in 247 countries were using the Internet. As time goes
on, the Internet is becoming more and more popular.
There is one irrelevant (not needed) sentence in each of these
paragraphs. Cross out the sentence that is not needed.
The students in my class come from many different
countries. Some are from Puerto Rico, Peru, Mexico,
Guatemala and Honduras. Others are from Jordan, Pakistan,
Ghana and Liberia. Others still are from the Philippines and
Vietnam. Japan has many cool cities. Many students are
from El Salvador. There are students from many parts of the
world.
5 ) Writing Practice
Using the topic sentence that I give you, write a paragraph.
