n the past, they were the ones who led
canonizations, now its their turn to be
canonized.
All roads lead to Rome once again and
all eyes are set at the Vatican City this April
27 as the Holy Father Pope Francis will
canonize his predecessors, Blessed John
Paul II and Blessed John XXIII.
In an era of winds of change, both
popes stood as holy shepherds to their
flock and became beacons of light by their
heroic virtues and sanctity.
Pope John XXIII
Elected in 1958, then Cardinal Roncalli
became Pope John XXIII. This subsequently
became a historical turning point of his
life. He ushered a new springtime for the
Catholic Church by convening the Second
Vatican Council in 1962.

As a loving and holy Shepherd, John
XXIII was a voice of peace who promoted
Christian unity, stressed the friendly-
approach to other religions and the role of
the laity in the Catholic Church.
Being contemplative, empowered by
deep prayerful life and love for the Holy
Eucharist, he visited the sick and the
prisoners. In his own words, John XXIII
said My day must be one long prayer;
prayer is the breath of life. I propose to recite
all fifteen decades of the Rosary every day,
if possible in the chapel before the Blessed
Sacrament.
Saints do have a sense of humor. The
story was that when John XXIII was visiting

t was during the course of Jesus revelations
to Saint Faustina on the Divine Mercy that
Jesusaskednumeroustimesthat a feast be
dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this
feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter.
At the Mass for Canonization of St. Faustina
Kowalska, on the Second Sunday of Easter
of the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope John Paul II
proclaimed that from now on throughout the
Church this Sunday will be called Divine Mercy
Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian
world to face, with confidence in divine
benevolence, the difficulties and trials that
mankind will experience in the years to come.
The message of the Divine Mercy is for us
to know that GOD LOVES ALL OF US. Jesus
Christ wants us to recognize that His great
mercy is greater than our sins that we may
call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy
and that it flows to others through us. The
Divine Mercy devotion fosters the virtue of
trust in Gods mercy that finds its fulfillment

like to play magic. Sometimes, I am

always the audience will ask, how I did it or
how did I perform such a trick. Some are

On this Divine Mercy Sunday, we
praise and thank God for the gift of two
saints - Sts. John Paul II and John

Their canonization reminds us
of our common vocation - that we
are called by God to be saints, to be
holy. Whatever our vocation in life,
either we are priests and religious,

The theme of the Year of
Laity affirms this universal call
to holiness: Be Brave! Called to
be saints... Sent Forth as Heroes!
Sanctity is not just for people in the
religious life, its a call for everyone.
When God calls us for this kind of life, He
provides us the means and ways. We have the

of Marriage to a couple who are
already in their sixties. I was
inspired because in their old age,
they realize that they need to be
sanctified by seeking the blessing
of God for their married life.
May we emulate the good
example of this couple. We pray
that many of us will approach the
Sacraments and receive the graces
they offer for our own salvation.

in the liturgy of Reconciliation and of the
Holy Eucharist. Popular piety animates the
faith attitudes that make participation in the
sacraments more vital and fruitful.
The ABC message and the devotion to
Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the
writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska (1905-
1938), an uneducated Polish nun who, in
obedience to her spiritual director, wrote
a diary of about 600 pages recording the
revelations, visions and visitations she
received about Gods mercy. Even before her
death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine
Mercy had begun to spread. She died of
tuberculosis at the age of 33. Pope John Paul
II canonized her on April 30, 2000.
Of the Feastday, Jesus said to St. Faustina:
My daughter, tell the whole world about My
inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast
of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls,
and especially for poor sinners. On that day the
very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour
out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls
who approach the Fount of My Mercy. The
soul that will go to Confession and receive
Holy Communion shall obtain complete
forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that
day all the divine floodgates through which
grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw
near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.
My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man
or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout
all eternity. Everything that exists has come
forth from the very depths of My most tender
mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will
contemplate My love and mercy throughout
eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My
very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that
it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday
after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until
it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.(Diary699)
Excerpts in red taken from the Diary of St.
Faustina, 1987 Marians of the Immaculate
Conception, Stockbridge, MA.
This devotion was actively promoted by
Pope John Paul II. He died on the vigil of the
Divine Mercy on April 2, 2005 at the age of 84.
He was the 264th Roman Pontiff, the youngest
pope of the 21th century and the 1st non-
Italian to serve as leader of the Catholic world
in over 400 years. He was one of the longest
andmost influential pontificatesinthehistory
of the Catholic Church. Today, Divine Mercy
Sunday, Pope John Paul II together with Pope
John XXII will be canonized for sainthood at
the Vatican City.
The Divine Mercy message is
one we can call to mind simply
by remembering ABC:

A -ASK FOR HIS MERCY. God
wants us to approach Him in
prayer constantly, repenting of
oursinsandaskingHimtopour
His mercy out upon us and upon
the whole world.

B -BE MERCIFUL. God wants
us to receive His mercy and let
itflowthroughustoothers.
He wants us to extend love and
forgiveness to others just as He
does to us.

C -COMPLETELY TRUST IN
JESUS.Godwantsustoknow
that the graces of His mercy are
dependent upon our trust. The
more we trust in Jesus, the more
we will receive.
Jesus personally with his own eyes and put his
fingersthroughHiswounds. He still doubted
despite the fact that he was present when
Jesus commanded His friend Lazarus to rise
after being dead for days.
WearealsolikeThomassometimes. We
doubt. Of course, we dont want to get hurt,
thats why we always want to be sure. We
are afraid to be disappointed and frustrated.
Because of doubt, it is hard for us to trust, love
and believe.
Truly it is hard to love and to believe a
person or thing we havent seen yet. How
can we love a person when we have not seen
him? But mind you, we havent seen Jesus, but
we love Him, right? Another example is Big
Brother the one they call Kuya in the reality
show. The housemates in the papular TV
showPinoy Big Brother have never seen him,
yet they lovingly call himKuya. They havent
seen him but still love him. They believe in
himand showKuya their respect.
Believing in magic or other things not
seen ortangiblerequiresfaith. It isdifficult to
believe unless we have faith. May we all see
ourselvesin doubtful Thomas, wholacksfaith
and try our best to strengthen that seed of
faith in our hearts.
Some of us prefer to see things first
before believing, but with Jesus, give no room
for doubt, just believe and you will see what
you would want to see!
Word of God and the Sacraments to help us in
our daily sanctification. His commandments
are there to guide us so that we can live in
freedomas His sons and daughters.
But the question is this: are we taking
advantage of the means that God has
providedforourownsanctification?Whyis

A
s we shall be celebrating
next month the Flores
de Mayo, it is good for us
to know the history of this long
time practice that we have here
in the Philippines.
Flores a Spanish word
that means flowers, Flores de
Mayo (Flowers of May), Flores
de Maria (Flowers of Mary),
or Halad kay Maria (Offering to
Mary), this refers to the whole
Flower Festival celebrated in the
month of May in honor of the
Virgin Mary.
The custom and celebration
of Flores de Mayo started
in the Philippines after the
proclamation of the Dogma of
the Immaculate Conception in
1854 and after the publication
circa 1867 of a Mariano Sevillas
translation of the devotional
Flores de Maria. With this, the
devotion started in the Tagalog

Luzon Provinces of Laguna, Batangas
and Pampanga.
Later on, it covered the whole
country. Furthermore, this devotion
is practiced during the month of May
because here in the Philippines rainy
season begins and the landscape
bursts with tropical flowers. And
being predominantly Catholic, the
Filipinos celebrate the beneficial
rains by giving praise to the Blessed
Virgin Mary.
With this, Filipinos turn each of
the 31 days in May into a charming
tribute to the Virginal Virtues of
Mary. Spiritual virtues seek to reach
even the young. Every day in May,
children with flowers and baskets of
petals march down the Church center
aisle and offer the fragrant petals
to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is
called Halad kay Maria. This is
accompanied with songs to our Lady.
The daily activities are: 1)
childrens catechesis; 2) songs and
guidedgames;3)praying theRosary,
4)prayersandoffering offlowers
with songs to Mary; 5) merienda
(contributedbydifferent families
called toca or turno).
At the end of the month a
big celebration is held in the
parish, such as catechetical
day for children, solemn Mass,
procession with Reina Elena
and her son Constantine,
accompanied by young girls
depicting the different virtues of
Mary (Virtudes teologales, siete
virtudes, etc.) followed by a grand
merienda of local food delicacies
for all participants.
In view of our celebration
of Flores de Mayo, all catechists
are reminded of the orientation
on April 29, 2014, from 8:00a.m.
to 4:00 p. m., at the La Isabelita
Hall. May this month be a gracious
opportunity for all of us especially
for our children and young people
to learnandlive the virtues of Mary,
our Blessed Mother.

ays God Will Correct Our Course as
He Did for the Disciples
VATICAN CITY, April 23, 2014 -
During the general audience this morning
inSt. PetersSquare-- attendedbycrowds
even more numerous than usual due to
this weekends canonizations of Popes
John Paul II and John XXIII -- Francis
asked those present: Why do you seek
the living among the dead?
Referring to todays Gospel in which
angels admonished Jesus followers by
posing this precise question, the Holy
Father repeated this inquiry several
times to the faithful, who crowded under
open umbrellas in the light rain.
Francis noted examples of those
looking among the dead for the one
who is alive: the Apostle Thomas who
doubted him, Mary Magdalene who did
not recognize him, and the disciples of
Emmaus who felt sad and defeated.
Stressing that Jesus corrected their
path, the Pontiff noted, likewise, He
will always be close to us to correct our
course if we have gone wrong.

Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal
Tagle on Sunday exhorted the
Filipino faithful to initiate a fresh start
in pursuing peace, noting that Easter
signals the beginning of a newlife.
With true peace coming from the
Risen Christ we can all start a new life.
We call on Jesus to breathe the Holy Spirit
on the Filipino people, Tagle said.

Earthquakes, conflicts, typhoons
The cardinal urged the public to
start anew so that we may experience
a fresh start in our quest for peace,
specifically mentioning the Bangsamoro

ravaged by earthquakes, typhoons, and
armedconflicts.

Missionary event
Calling Easter a missionary event
which transforms timid and fearful
disciples into bold and determined

faithful to heed the Risen Lord who sends
us to bring His word, peace and hope to all

In accomplishing this mission, the
prelate said the lay faithful must fulfill
their religious duty of proclaiming the
Gospel to others.

ATICAN CITY, April 23, 2014 -
Everyone can be as holy as the
Popes who will be canonized
this Sunday, Romes vocations
director has stressed.
Don Fabio Rosini said that all can be
just as holy as they were, if they answer
Gods call of mercy by responding to God
in love.
He was speaking at a meeting with
young peoplethat took placeat thepapal
archbasilica of St. John Lateran. Cardinal
Agostino Vallini, vicar of Rome, presided.
Father Manuel Dorantes, official at
Pope Tells Faithful of Joy We Can Have
When We Abandon Mistaken Ways of Thinking
This question helps us resist the temptation
tolook back, towhat wasyesterday, andpushesus
forward into the future.
Yesterday, Pope Francis said, is the tomb of Jesus
and the Church, the tomb of truth and justice. Today,
he added, is the perennial resurrection to which the
Holy Spirit impels us, gifting us full freedom.
Speaking ofChristsresurrection, thesourceof
Easter joy, he noted, With the resurrection, all has
been made newand fresh hope has been poured out
on the world.
Acknowledging thequestionsrelevancein the
lives of the faithful, especially one who close[s]
in on yourself after a failure or you who no longer
have the strength to pray, or when we feel alone,
abandoned by friends, and perhaps even by God?
[when you] have lost hope or you who feel
imprisoned by your sins? Why are you looking
among the dead for one who is alive?
Remembering this admonition helps us emerge
from our spaces of sadness and opens up for us
horizons of joy and hope, he said. That hope that
removes stones from graves and encourages us to
proclaim the Good News, capable of generating new
life for others.
Turning to discussing where Jesus is, Lets
the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, told
ZENIT that the message of the event was right on.
I was very taken aback specifically by Don
Fabio who basically reminded our young people,
the young people of Rome, that the life of John Paul
II, as important as it is, is not more important than
yours. ... We all are called to holiness.
The call to holiness is not for an exclusive club
of people, but rather it is a universal call to which all
of us are meant to respond, he added.
Prior to Don Fabios catechesis, Father
Giovangiuseppe Califano and Monsignor Slawomir
Oder, postulators for the causes of Blessed John XXIII
andJohnPaul II, respectively, gavepersonal testimonies.

All Are Called to Be as Holy as Saint Popes
Pilgrims attending enjoyed the
personal recollections provided by
Monsignor Oders discourse, especially
relating to John Paul IIs sense of humor.
For young people to hear today,
that their lives are important, their lives
matter, and are as important as those of
John Paul II or John XXIII, is significant,
Father Dorantes said.
Jane Skjoldli, a Norwegian pilgrim,
added that the meeting made the love
of these two Popes so tangible, so
palpable. (DeborahCastellanoLubov)

Respond! Rebuild! Resurrect!
The Paradox of Life
by: Maria Antonette D. Pasquin
mind that this truth is actually the paradox
of life the irony that perfectly makes sense
at all. We can never experience the genuine
happiness of winning when we never feel the
sadness of losing. We cannever learntostand
up if we never have fallen once in our lifetime.
Hence, let us not immediately succumb to
anger or self-frustration.
The figure of the Risen Christ also
reminds us that with God, everything is
possible. He can always draw out something
good from something bad. That is why we
shouldneverbreakourbondwithHim.Let
us always cling to Him and remain faithful
to Him because it is through Him that we
enjoy the Fruits of Calvary.
In consonance with this, let me share
one beautiful statement from a book
entitled, Crossing the Threshold of Hope,
a compilation of answers to the frequently
asked questions of many people about the
CatholicFaith,bythesoon-to-be-canonized,
His Holiness, Blessed Pope John Paul II.
Moreover, I believe that such statement
encapsulates one important truth that we
should always remember especially this
Easter and whenever we are faced with
different problems in life, that is, The
Gospel contains a fundamental paradox: to
find life, one must lose life; to be born, one
must die; to save oneself, one must take up
the cross.
A meaningful and joyous Easter to
everyone!
Respond! Rebuild! Resurrect!
Christ Is Risen!

H
ow many times have we asked
ourselves or others frustrating
questions like: Why do we have to
suffer? Why do we have to go through all
these hardships?, and whenever we throw
these questions, how many times do we get
answers: No pain, no gain, No guts, no
glory?
Perhaps there are certain moments
in our lives when we are caught up in a
difficult situation and the easiest thing we
do is complain or blame others. Seriously,
what do we get out of doing those things?
Nothingatall.Well,maybeaten-secondor
so, will relieve self-guilt. However, when
westartpointingfingersatotherpeople,is
this short-lived relief enough in exchange
for the good rapport we have with them?
Does all the yelling and shouting at others
truly ease us of our current situation or just
worsens it?
A friend once told me, People survive
because of relationships. Hence, when we
are confronted with different challenges
in life, we should not destroy ties with one
another by badmouthing just because we
think he or she is the reason why we are
in a difficult situation. Rather, we should
strengthen our relationship through
constant and effective communication,
because through these we become vigorous
to overcome lifes obstacles.
One perfect example or illustration of
my point can be seen in the Passion, Death
and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We all know what Jesus had gone through
- all the pain brought by the malevolence
of the people who were once with the
strongest faith in Him. Maybe we even had
reflectedonHiswoundsduringtheseason
of Lent. However, another important truth
that Jesus wanted to tell us in His victory
over death - His glorious Resurrection,
is that, He could never have succeeded
without His unfailing trust and complete
surrender to the Father. Indeed, through
the Passion and Death of our Lord that
we were all redeemed and the gates of
heaven opened for each one of us. Now all
of these happened because Jesus, despite
of the unfathomable suffering he had to go
throughchosetostrengthenandnotbreak
His ties with everyone He loves His Father,
and His people.
Challenges are already part of our lives. It
is inevitable not to bumpinto one hurdle after
the other. However, we should always bear in

STS. JOHN. from page 1...
Father, Im the Superior of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Father wittily replied Well... Im
the Vicar of Christ.
His pontificate lasted for more than
four years only, yet his legacy still remains.
During his beatification by John Paul II in
2000, he quoted John XXIII, What count the
most in life is, Jesus Christ, His Holy Church,
His Gospel, Truth and Goodness.
Pope John Paul II
In a decade where fear engulfed the
hearts of many, John Paul II uttered the
time-honored, immortal words, Do not be
afraid, open, open wide the doors for Christ!
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said
during Pope John Pauls beatification, His
witness of faith, love, apostolic courage plus
charisma helped believers throughout the
world to be brave Christians, to belong to
the Church and be brave in proclaiming the
Gospel. As Benedict XVI would put it he
helped us not to fear the truth, because truth
is the guarantee of liberty. To put it even more
succinctly: he gave us the strength to believe
in Christ, because Christ is Redemptor
hominis, the Redeemer of man.
As one of the longest holders of Petrine
Office,hispontificatelastedfor27years.He
was the most traveled Pope and wherever
he was, a huge crowd followed him and his
presence radiated the love of Christ.
In his visit here in the Archdiocese
of Jaro in 1981 he said, You must remain
united with Christ... Vigilance is always
a condition for Christian freedom - the
vigilance expressed above all in prayer...
and reminds us that Mary, the Mother of
God is with you. She is the Mother of mercy
and fair love... Moreover, he canonically
crowned La Virgen de la Candelaria, when
he was yet a Pope. From now on it will
no longer be crowned by the Pope, but
crownedbytheSaint-Pope.
A truly Marian Pope, John Paul II,
was often seen praying the Rosary, wrote
magisterial documents about Our Lady as
well the Rosary itself. His coat-of-arms
bore the letter M for Mary and a Marian
motto, Totus tuus . He said, The Rosary is
my favorite prayer and How beautiful is the
family that recites the Rosary every evening.
His Pontificate was also associated
with great spiritual figures like Blessed
Teresa of Calcutta, whom he described as A
missionary of God who is love... a missionary
of life.
NEW INTERCESSORS
To sum it up, the lives of Saints John
Paul II and John XXIII is what Blessed Teresa
of Calcutta wonderfully expressed as love-
in-action and something beautiful for God.
As these important ceremonies
unfold in Rome in spirit and in prayer, let
us join our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in
glorifying God for giving us these holy
shepherds, John XXIII and John Paul II as
our new intercessors particularly in these
challenging times.
A
fter a tearful week of meditation on
Jesussufferingsanddeath,wewake
up to a brighter dawn, the dawn of
the realization of our shortcomings and
spiritual failures and our chance to have a
brighter tomorrow.
God is always giving us many chances of
returning to His favor, and if we are sincere
in our desire to be close to Him. We can be
with Jesus during His days of passion, die
with Him spiritually as we bury our sins,
rise with Him as we receive many graces
during His resurrection and ascend with
Him into the forgiving arms of the Father as
wekneelinrepentance.
Today, we are surrounded with many
vices which disturb us physically, mentally,
and spiritually. There are many among
us who are taking advantage of our weak
points and convince ourselves to follow
wrong values which destroy us, and lead us
toadarkfuture.
Jesus sacrificed and died for us. Shall
we allow His sufferings to become useless
because we refuse to be transformed? We
must never lose time from being followers
of Christ, not even for a moment. The road
may be rough and full of stumbling blocks
but it is easier than the road to Calvary.
Let us first look at our home. Is
it spiritually clean? Are all the family
members devoted followers of Jesus? Are
we conscious of our duties and obligations?
In our learning institutions, we need to
put importance on the emphasis of social
and spiritual values. In private and public
offices let us paint the picture of the risen
Christ in our minds and discharge our
duties with integrity. Wherever we are, we
must give an important place to the risen
Christ, by preaching through example.
Let us carry Jesus in our hearts and let
Himinfluenceourrelationwithfriendsand
strangers.
Do you see that old and weak woman
whohasdifficultyincrossingtheroad?Do
you see that blind old man who is opening
his palm, waiting for somebody to drop a
coin there? Do you see that barefooted boy
who is waiting for someone to give him a
piece of bread?
Christ is risen! He is no longer inthe cold,
darktomb. He is inyour heart, waiting for you
to feel Him, and live as He wants you to.
Let us give happiness to Jesus as He
sees us discard our negative attitude and
adopt the life of a real Christian. If all
of us can give even only a little from our
treasury of values, this world will soon be
transformed into an earthly paradise where
real Christianity would reign. Let us remove
thecloudsofinfidelityandfollowChristas
we travel in this temporal world.
Are we ready for the battle against
darkness? Are we ready to carry the
lanterns of transformation and reform?
Do you see the smile on Jesus? Face His
extended Hand? What are we waiting for?
Lets go to Him!
