It is possible that when he was first tested (in United Arabia Emirates) he was carrying the virus but when we tested him, the virus was gone. It is possible that he overcame the virus, Luistro said. The patient was exposed to MERS-CoV on april 6 when he visited a Filipino paramedic, a co-worker, who was infected by the virus. The paramedic died two days later.

PNP helps locate co-passengers of OFW diagnosed with MERS-CoV

The Department of Health (DOH) said the Philippine National Police is helping them in locating the co-passengers of the overseas Filipino worker who was initially diagnosed with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus (MERS-COV) while in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). PNP is assisting us in locating passengers on Etihad flight EY 0424 last April 15. The plane our index case from Abu Dhabi rode, DOH Undersecretary Teodoro Herbosa said in a text message. Each passenger needs to be tested and confined. Discharged once test is negative. PNP is called when passenger resists, he added. In another interview, DOH Emerging Infectious Diseases Program Manager Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy said they sought the help of the PNP to ensure that all who need to be tested and quarantined will cooperate. TWe sought their help because, for sure, there will be those that will resist and question why they need to be tested and quarantined. We need help in convincing them to come with us and get tested, said Lee Suy. Not to say they will be forcibly quarantined. But we, specifically the PNP, has the police power to implement the Quarantine Law. It can be imposed, especially if there is public health crisis or threat involved, he added. In the ongoing contact tracing by the DOH of the 415 passengers on board the said Etihad Airlines Flight, 119 have been contacted and 72 of them have been tested, with 40 so far cleared. President Aquino earlier directed the DOH to form Task Force MERS-COV, to intensify the contact tracing efforts for the co-passengers of the overseas Filipino worker (OFW). The OFW became the first MERS-CoV case in the country when he came home last Tuesday for the Holy Week from the UAE, where he was tested positive by Abu Dhabi health authorities. The OFW was tested following the contact tracing done by UAE officials to those who had gone near the second Filipino fatality of MERS-CoV who died last April 10.

However at the time when the results came out, the OFW was already headed back to the Philippines. On Saturday, the DOH already announced that the OFW has been found negative of the virus after two laboratory testing by the DOH and is now ready for discharge from quarantine. Even the family members of the OFW had also been found negative of the virus by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) and were already discharged. The DOH earlier urged the other passengers of the said flight to submit themselves to testing in order to remove any worries on their part and rule out possibility of infecting others. MERS-CoV is a communicable disease so it is important that we all work together to prevent the infection from spreading, DOH Secretary Enrique Ona said. Upon contact with the DOH, Ona explained the task force will fetch them and be brought to the nearest DOH hospital, where their nasopharyngeal swabs will be taken for them to be sent either to the RITM in Muntinlupa City or the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City for laboratory testing. The testing will be done for free as well as their stay in quarantine. Section 4 of the Quarantine Act of 2004 states that: the DOH may prescribe examination of any individual believed to be infected with a disease of international concern. It further provides that if upon examination, any such individual is found to be infected or has been exposed to infection considered as dangerous contact, he may be isolated aboard a vessel, in a hospital with facilities for infectious diseases, at a quarantine station, or at any isolation facility.
