They organized a Hero Hustle 5K run that raised $1530.95 for the Blacksburg Children's Museum. 154 people registered for the run with 124 participating. The fraternity also participated in a stream monitoring workshop with Save Our Streams to test water quality. Additionally, one brother spent spring break in Nicaragua with VT Nicaraguan Orphan Fund helping children and learning about their daily hardships.

    Hero Hustle 5K Charity Run to benefit the Blacksburg Childrens Museum


    On March 22 , Delta Psi Nu successfully threw a 5K/1 mile fun run at Margaret Beeks Elementary School in Blacksburg, Virginia. The charity run was the brainchild of Jessica Chau, who first came up with the idea over a year and a half ago. Planning for the event began in early fall of 2013 after the fraternity jointly agreed that the proceeds from the run would benefit The Blacksburg Childrens Museum. After a vote was taken, the theme Hero Hustle was decided upon. Registrants, including children and adults, were encoruaged encouraged to dress up as their favorite heroes

After a fierce advertising campaign that included social media, flyering, and individual class visits, 154 people registered. Of this number, 124 ran. 50 fraternity brothers volunteered at the event in roles that ranged from setting up to directing runners where to head on the two available courses.     permanent location at the First and Main Shopping Center. The museum is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate and inspire children through hands-on activities such as dramatic play and creative arts. Children are engaged in tasks that introduce them to science, technology, history, culture, and more. The museums entire board and staff consist of volunteers. The proceeds from the run will help the museum fund new exhibits a single exhibit can cost thousands of dollars. After this years huge success, the fraternity hopes to make this event an annual event.

    Brotherhood Spotlight: Spring break tales

    I had the opportunity to travel down to Nicaragua for the 2nd year in a row with VT Nicaraguan Orphan Fund. We didnt build houses or wells, but we built strong hearts and minds. A lot of house people said that I would be impacting the kids, but I think they impacted me more. After the trip, many members did the Compassion Diet. The kids in Nicaragua get only one meal a day usually consisting of rice and beans. We vowed to only eat rice and beans for five days to raise awareness and money. Although it was hard and caused immense hunger, it was only five days. Imagine if that was your entire childhood.

    Save Our Streams

    On March 1st, a group of brothers worked with a member of NRV Save Our Streams (SOS) in order to survey the water quality of a stream in Christiansburg. The team collected, counted, and identified insects taken directly from the water in order to determine its level of pollution. This was the fraternitys first stream monitoring workshop. We hope to partner with SOS again in the future.

    WHO WE ARE
    Delta Psi Nu Local Leadership Fraternity was established in October 2011 by a group of students at Virginia Tech. It is an entirely student-run organization. We pride ourselves in our diversity of members and widespread involvement on campus and in the Blacksburg community. We are a co-ed group and value friendship above everything else.
