Lesson Plan #1 Conquistadors Common Core Standards: W.5.

9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. W.5.10 Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a range of disciplinespecific tasks, purposes, and audiences. RI.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and drawing inferences from the text. Materials Needed: Grouping or Arrangement: Whole group instruction The Conquistadors by Jim Ollhoff pg. 8-10, 12-14, 18, 26 or PDF file Note-Taking graphic organizer/ Journal per student and teacher Document Camera or SmartBoard How will the concept or skill be introduced and modeled for the students? 5 minutes 1. Teacher will pose general exploration questions to students: Have you ever explored an unfamiliar area? (i.e. first visit to a museum, park, new neighborhood, nature hike, etc.) What did you see? How did you feel? Was exploring a positive or negative experience? How did you benefit from this experience? Did you take any risks? Did you sacrifice anything to fully explore? 2. Teacher will encourage students to share their answers orally with the class or reflect on a specific experience in writing. 3. Teacher may remind students of Social Studies content: Conquistadors and their exploration to new land. How will the teacher guide the students in practicing the concept or skill? 45 minutes 1. Teacher will introduce the book, The Conquistadors. Class will read a variety of excerpts on pages pg. 8-10, 12-13, 18, and 26 using a Document Camera. 2. Teacher will pass out and introduce Note-Taking graphic organizer/Journal. Teacher will model on Doc Cam how to fill out the Title/Author/5 W s section. Students should copy example. Teacher may select specific Conquistador (i.e. Cortez) or summarize several Conquistadors from the text. (See Example Note-Taking Sheet for reference.) 3. Teacher will introduce theme question: Are the benefits of exploration worth the risks and sacrifices that ensue? Teacher should explain that the class will be responding to the same question as they take a closer look at different types of exploration (i.e. space, sea, land, fictional, nonfictional, etc.) 4. Teacher will lead class in identifying specific evidence from the text that demonstrate how exploration was beneficial in the space provided on the organizer. Class should copy example. 5. Teacher will model reflection on specific quote in space provided. Class should copy example. 6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 for Risks and Sacrifices.

7. Teacher will model drawing a meaningful picture clue in the space provided that represents the lesson. What will students do to independently practice the concept or skill? - Students may be given the opportunity to identify their own evidence - Students may be given the opportunity to respond individually to evidence - Students may share responses or picture clues with the class

*Students will have little independent practice because this lesson introduces note-taking strategies used throughout the Unit What new vocabulary will be introduced during this lesson? How will the vocabulary be taught? - Conquistadors: remind students of Social Studies content and specific explorers - Benefits: What are the positive results of a situation? - Risk/Sacrifice: What are the possible dangers of a situation? What could you lose? - Ensue: happen or occur after Common Core Academic Vocabulary - evidence - sources - text structure - logical How will struggling students be supported How will new learning be monitored and throughout this lesson: assessed? - Students will be supported by heavy - Graphic organizer completed teacher modeling on the Doc Cam - Student sharing - Students will have opportunity to connect with content through personal response and visuals After the Lesson Reflection: How could this lesson be improved in the future? How can positive elements of this lesson be incorporated into other lessons?
