Cognitive Development – Exercise of Piaget’s Theory

Possible Answers to the Cartoon Exercises:

Cartoon 1: Stage 2: Preoperational – the child demonstrated the characteristic of

centration as he thought that learning to be “half” as good as others means a test score of
50/100.

Cartoon 2: Stage 2: Preoperational – The child displayed the characteristic of animism

by asking if he needs to greet the “Winter” politely.

Cartoon 3: Stage 2 Preoperational – Children displayed the characteristics of

centration and egocentrism. They thought the age of 25 – 30 is not young anymore, but
they related to the world only through their own age. Thus, the age range of 25 – 30 is
not young compared to age 4 or 5. In addition, they ignored an important aspect that the
advertisement was hiring a economist (經濟專家), which is not easy to earn such
qualification at the age of 25 – 30.

Cartoon 4: Stage 3 Concrete Operational – The girl decided to “Play” freedom by

holding a light bulb on right hand and a book on the left hand. This reflects the girl’s
abilities to apply or logical operations (set a rule for playing a game) at a concrete
level.

Cartoon 5: Stage 2 Preoperational – Children displayed the characteristics of

centration and egocentrism. In response to the teacher’s question of “Let’s learn about
direction today. Where is the sun coming from?”, the child said “Morning”. It reflects
the child only focuses on the time, but ignores the direction where the sun is coming in
solving the problem. When the teacher asked the question again “Where is the sun rising
from?” The child answered “Outside the window”. When the teacher probed him again,
he said “I have no idea to see the sunrise from another place to know where is it rising
from”. It reflects his inabilities to understand other’s perspective.

Cartoon 6: Stage 4 Formal operational – The boy displayed hypothetical and abstract
thinking by saying that he can think about the learning in school from an opposite
direction. He used to think the teacher forced him to study and do homework. Now, he
thinks that he forces the teacher to teach him and to give homework to him. It reflects his
abilities to create a hypothetical situation that is not possible in reality.

Cartoon 7: Stage 3 Concrete Operational – The boy asked the question, “Somewhere
must be leaking; how come the so much water has flowed to here?” The child
understands and applies logical thinking (rules) of events at a concrete level.

Reasoning at everyday tale

Young and Middle child (Stage 3 Concrete Operational) tried to solve a problem from
trials-and-errors and applied logical thinking from their concrete experiences of
opening the jar. The oldest child (Stage 4 Formal Operational) used deductive

reasoning (reasoning from general principles, through specific steps, to a specific
conclusion.) by applying the principle of contraction and expansion in response to
temperature change (冷縮熱脹) to open the jar.
