UWC-USAS ANNUAL SOCCER MATCH:

NOT ONLY A GAME

Duc Le (Vietnam,'15) After the first week of classes, on a sunny day in Montezuma, UWCUSA successfully organized the annual friendly soccer match between the 1st and 2nd year students. This is one of the most anticipated activities in the school year that not only fills the atmosphere with excitement, but also builds nervousness among all. Since the crack of the dawn, every heart was charged with excitement. Maybe everyone had had a sleepless night to looking forward to the match and watching the clock ticking towards the important time. Studying ceased, and it seemed that everything was ready. At the beginning of the match, the 2nd year students appeared suddenly from the Castle and came to the field with the confidence of experienced players. The other side, our 1st year team, had gathered so early, and they were really excited about the coming competition. Experience would fight with the power of youth to find the winner. A whistle resounded, the game began under the blazing heat of sun, but heat on the field was more than that. Not only boys, but also our girls took part in this match with 100% enthusiasm, and they were as professional as any boys. Wonderful, incredible shoots, passes, tackles, saves, and crossings appeared so frequently, making the game more exciting than any students sleeping in could have imaged. Outside the pitch, supporters of both teams shouted and encouraged their team eagerly. There were so many close calls, but the only thing everyone was waiting for, a goal, had not come. Finally, what will be will be. In the sixth minute of the match, after receiving a good pass from a teammate, Connor Fox scored spectacularly, putting the 1st year team ahead. Six minutes later, Morgan, one of the best players of 1st year team, scored and doubled the lead for his team. At that time, the 2nd year team looked like they had just woken up from a deep sleep. They attacked and put opponents goal in emergency. In the 38th minute, Otto van Wassenaer shot in target and made a beautiful goal, kindling hope for his team. However, 2-1 was the result for the 1st half. The match became more dynamic than ever when the 2nd half started. Teams of 2nd year students persevered, fighting for a goal. Meanwhile, the firsties were calm, resisting the effort. The strain lasted about 25 minutes before the 4th goal appeared. After a mistake led to a penalty for

the 2nd years, on the penalty spot, Liam Brown did not make any errors and scored a goal to equalize the result. All 2nd year students burst out shouting in happiness, glimpsing the possibility of an amazing victory. However, 6 minutes later, once again, the1st year team went ahead by a goal by Saliou, when he was making an effort to save the ball. Now, balance was broken and victory seemed in the first years futures. But, only 6 minutes later, Micha Kretschmann scored, defining the final result of the match, 3-3. Although no team won the game, this result pleased everyone. We did reach our aim. Team spirit has developed more and more following this match. Furthermore, we also improved the unity of the school, thanks to both teams enthusiasm and friendliness. It was not a serious game, only an exciting activity in order to make us closer. Because, in the end, we are a big FAMILY. 1st years Goals 3 Conor Fox (USA) 6 Morgan Ingenthron (USA) 12(Saliou), 76 Shots 9 Shots on goal 6 Corners 4 5 4 10 3 Otto van Wassenaer (Netherlands) 38 Liam Brown (USA) 70 (PK) Micha Kretschmann (Germany) 82 2nd years
