Angle Parking
Angle Parking is a
tool to increase the supply of onstreet parking on roadways satisfying certain conditions.

45 Degree
Forty-Five Degree Parking
is used on one way streets when roadways are 38 to 40 feet wide. Under ideal conditions (no breaks for driveways, alleys, fire hydrants, etc.) a 60% increase in the number of spaces can be achieved as compared to parallel parking.

60 Degree
Sixty degree parking
provides a higher number of parking spaces and is used on one-way streets with 41-foot widths (or greater). Under ideal conditions, 60 degree parking nearly doubles the number of spaces as compared with parallel parking.

Reverse Angle Parking

A Pilot Project of
Reverse angle parking was installed on Chestnut Avenue in Hampden in November of 2006. Spaces are angled to facilitate motorists backing into spaces. This increases visibility when motorists are exiting spaces.

Conditions
Traffic Volumes Candidate streets should have less than
1000 vehicles per day (24 hour volume). Higher volumes increase the potential for cars exiting the angle spaces. Roadway width Streets must be wide enough so that parallel parking can be maintained on one side while angle parking is implemented on the other. There must also be a buffer area so that motorists can begin exiting parking spaces without encroaching on the traffic lane. For a one way street this minimum width is 38 feet. Neighborhood access Many candidate streets are initially 2-way and must be converted to one way in preparation for installation of angle parking. Elimination of one direction of travel must not compromise local traffic circulation or bus routes. Safe Sight Distance Candidate roadways must have clear sight distance so motorists can see parked vehicles well in advance.

How do I get Angle Parking installed on my Street?

A written request must be submitted to the Department of Transportation
(DOT) or the Parking Authority for Baltimore City (PABC). DOT then conducts an investigation to determine if the 4 aforementioned conditions are met, and advises PABC accordingly. PABC works with the requesting organization to have a petition circulated to establish consensus for the street direction (when one-way conversion is necessary) as well as for the angle parking installation. PABC validates the petition and if representatives of 70% of the households indicate approval, a request is sent to DOT for implementation. schedules the installation. The installation must be done in warm weather on a dry day in order for the markings material to adhere. On the day of installation, parking must be prohibited to provide room to apply the markings.
