Gases, vapours and mists which occur during storage, production or processing of flammable substances, together with the oxygen in the air, form an explosive atmosphere. In case this atmosphere is ignited, explosions take place which can be harmful to human beings and damage property. Ignition sources can be for example hot temperatures on surfaces, mechanically generated sparks, static electricity or electrical installations. Protective standards have been developed in many countries to ensure a high level of safety. In the European Union regulations have been harmonized in EC-directives

Manufacturer
Standardization
In short, those directives define the measures to be taken to avoid the ignition of potentially explosive atmospheres, i.e. atmospheres which could become explosive due to local and operational conditions. The required safety level depends on the danger potential in the very installation. In the EC-directives hazardous areas are divided into zones, defining the probability of an explosive atmosphere (in accordance with IEC 60079-10).
The NEC (National Electrical Code) of USA and the CEC (Canadian Electrical Code) of Canada divide into Classes and Divisions, which might deviate from the EC directives. Gases, vapours or mists are classified in Class 1, then divided into Divisions 1 or 2, then into Gas Groups. Please pay attention which standard has been applied (ECdirectives or NEC/CEC).
Manufacturers of equipment with a potential ignition source (like electric motors, rotating parts) have to ensure that the equipment fulfils the safety requirements given in the relevant directives and codes (grouping and category). The EC-directives then divide the equipment into Groups. Equipment group I covers mining systems, where a very high or high degree of safety is required. Equipment group II covers other explosive areas and is divided into categories from category 1 (very high degree of safety, even for independently occurring faults), category 2 (high degree of safety, even for occurrence of a fault) and category 3 (normal degree of safety in normal operation conditions). Electrical equipment of category 2 must undergo an EC type examination, carried out by a notified body. For electrical equipment of category 3 and non-electrical equipment the manufacturer is authorized to document conformity with the requirements of the EC-directive. CE-marking of the equipment confirms that it has been manufactured in compliance with all relevant EC-directives. Equipment group II is further classified into 3 explosion groups or gas groups. The IEC system is applied in Europe, where IIA is the lowest hazardous gas group, IIB medium and IIC the most volatile gas group. The NEC directives of North America define it the opposite way, where Group A is the most hazardous gas group.
Temperature classes Temperature classes determine the maximum surface temperature of a product at an ambient temperature of max. 40C, for example an electrical apparatus, which should always be lower than the ignition temperature of the gas/air or vapour/ air mixture in which it is used. The ignition temperature is the lowest temperature at which a hot surface
can ignite a respective explosive atmosphere. Flammable gases and vapours are classified into temperature classes according to their inflammability. Temperature classes range from T1 to T6.

conventional systems. Systemair jet fans have been tested in accordance with EN 12101-3 and are CElabelled. Cost-effective solution Jet fan systems do not require expensive and complex duct systems. Thus additional savings are gained in exhaust air fans due to reduced system resistance. The on demand ventilation due to CO detectors allows an energy-saving operation. CFD Analysis Systemair offers an accurate CFDsimulation to every project. A fee is charged and reimbursed when ordering. The simulation is needed to confirm the optimum performance of the system. Control System Systemairs custom-tailored control system meets the requirements of your specific project. CO sensors determine the ventilation rate according to demand. When used for smoke extract, the control system must be connected to fire detection system. Warranty Systemair offers a three year warranty on all Jet fan models. The Systemair warranty conditions apply.

Division
AJ (T)
The Systemair Matthews & Yates Division has been involved with specialist fan engineering in tunnel ventilation for more than 25 years. A number of important references all over the world prove our competence. Depending on the tunnel design, size and traffic flow, various solutions for ventilation are available. These are generally: a) Fully Transverse Air is supplied from one side of the tunnel and extracted from the other, picking up fumes in the process. Most suited to long tunnels but costly due to the large sized ducts required. b) Semi Transverse Fresh air is supplied uniformly over the length of the tunnel causing the foul air to escape longitudinally from the tunnel. Semi transverse ventilation systems use ducting for supply and often in conjunction with jet fans for certain sensitive areas.
c) Longitudinal Widely accepted as the most economical of the three systems and normally used for tunnels up to approximately 1 km in length, depending on traffic flow. Jet fans mounted in the tunnel roof will provide positive longitudinal ventilation and have the ability for reversal in emergencies or to work with prevailing winds. The number and size of fans depends on the maximum air flow required to maintain the level of carbon monoxide and diesel smoke at acceptable levels. The complete design and manufacture of the entire range is backed
up by the latest resources including CAD/CAM systems and CFD software in accordance with AMCA. Quality is to the highest international standard and we are fully certified to ISO 9001. EN 12101-3 certification is in progress.

Division
Jet Fans provide Ventilation which reduces the Carbon Monoxide (CO) to acceptable levels and cover all other likely pollutants generated by petrol engines, i.e. nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2). Jet Fans can limit the concentration of CO (in parts per million by volume) to suit requirements i.e. 250 parts/mill: Extreme traffic con- ditions 150 parts/mill: Peak traffic flow 100 parts/mill: Off peak traffic flow (this is the maximum exposure for full time tunnel staff). With diesel-engined traffic the exhaust smoke affects visibility within the tunnel and is the limiting factor rather than CO. Visibility levels (Diesel smoke particles per cubic metre of air) are normally defined as follows: 1 Dmg/m: clear for practical purposes 9 Dmg/m: visibility very poor, traffic must move slowly.
Thrust Measurement
Continuous research and development is our major consideration and our goal is to satisfy worldwide demand for our ventilation products. Jet fan measurements are carried out in accordance with ISO 13350. To further develop our jet fan technology and for customers witness testing, a new rig was commissioned to the latest international standards. This accurately determines the actual thrust by the suspended configuration method.
Incorporated within the rig is an adjustable position transducer measuring system. High temperature smoke spill testing is carried out to satisfy the wide range of demands for our export markets. Testing to the EN 12101-3 is in progress.
