Properties of Quadrilaterals!

What is a Quadrilateral?

Quadrilateral
Quadrilateral

means four sides (quad means four and lateral means side).
four sided shape is a Quadrilateral.

Any

Properties of a Quadrilateral:
Four
Four The

sides (edges)
vertices (corners)

interior angles add up to 360 degrees:

Types of Quadrilaterals:

The Rectangle!
A

rectangle is a four-sided shape where every angle is a right angle (90 degrees)
length! sides are parallel and of equal

Alsoopposite

What

does parallel mean?

The box means "right angle" The lines show equal sides

The Rhombus!

A rhombus is a four sided shape where all sides have equal length.
Also opposite sides are parallel and opposite angles are equal. Another interesting thing is that the diagonals (dashed lines in second figure) meet in the middle at a right angle. In other words they "bisect" (cut in half) each other at right angles.

The Square!
A

square has equal sides and every angle is a right angle (90 degrees).
opposite sides are parallel. The box means "right angle" The lines show equal sides

Also

The Parallelogram!
A

parallelogram has opposite sides parallel and equal in length.

angles are equal!

Opposite

Angles

a are the same and angles b are the same!

The Trapezoid!
The

trapezoid has a pair of opposite sides parallel.

The Kite!
It

has two pairs of sides. Each pair is made up of adjacent sides that are equal in length. The angles are equal where the pairs meet. Diagonals (dashed lines) meet at a right angle, and one of the diagonal bisects (cuts equally in half) the other.

Its pamphlet time!

Take out a piece of notebook paper and make a hot dog fold!
Bring the right side over to the pink line. Now, open it back up and divide the right hand section into 5 sections by drawing four evenly spaced lines. Use scissors to cut along your drawn lines but only to the crease! Draw one more line to divide the fifth flap into two sections! Now write quadrilaterals on the left hand side.

Parallelogram

1. Opposite sides parallel. 2. Opposite sides are equal.

3. Opposite angles are equal.

4. Measures 360 degrees

Rectangle

1. Has 4 right angles.

2. 3. 4.

Opposite sides are parallel. Opposite sides are equal Measures 360 degrees

A rectangle is also a parallelogram!

Rhombus
1.
2. 3. 4.

Opposite sides are parallel.

Opposite angles are equal. All sides are equal Measures 360 degrees

A rhombus is also a parallelogram!

Square

1. 2. 3. 4.

Opposite sides are parallel. All angles are right angles All sides are equal Measures 360 degrees

A square is also a parallelogram, rectangle, and rhombus!
