NO TIME FOR TRUTH

The Marines, Justice, and the Haditha Incident By Nathaniel R. Helms and Haytham Faraj
No Time for Truth is the first book to investigate the Haditha Massacrethe controversial killing of twenty-four unarmed Iraqi civilians by U.S. Marines in November 2005, and the subsequent prosecution of eight Marines charged with violating the rules of combat. Unraveled in this groundbreaking work, this many-faceted tragedy of the Iraq War compellingly illustrates the bitter observation of the ancient Greek playwright, Aeschylus, that truth is the first casualty of war. After the explosion of an IED killed one Marine and wounded two others, the counterattack by Marines against at least nine insurgents hiding in the village of Haditha resulted in the deaths of Iraqi civilians including an old man and ten helpless women and children. Ignited by an expos in TIME magazine, the reports of the killings exploded around the world in headline news reports citing murder and cover-up. Responding to Iraqi claims that the victims were randomly slaughtered by rampaging Marines bent on revenge, the Marines countered that the insurgents had intentionally endangered the civilians. Fueled by international and American condemnation of the killings and aided by the militarys botched response to the news stories, the Pentagon and the Marine Corps initiated court martial proceedings against the Marines involved in the incident. Slowly at first and then with greater rapidity the governments case began to fall apart. One after another, the alleged perpetrators walked away without sanction. Only one of the participants was convicted by merely agreeing to submit a guilty plea to a misdemeanor and an honorable discharge.

NOTHING TOO DARING

A Biography of Commodore David Porter, 17801843

DAVID GLASGOW FARRAGUT

Our First Admiral

By David F. Long
Comm. David Dixon Porter made history when he took the USS Essex into the Pacific and crippled the British whaling industry during the War of 1812. While the first to suggest that the U.S. Navy force open Japan, he was also courtmartialed for his unauthorized invasion of Spanish Puerto Rico. He later sought to reverse his fortunes in the Mexican Navy, and consistently suffered chaos in his personal and financial affairs. Nothing Too Daring offers an objective, thoroughly researched biography of one of Americas most colorful naval officers. DAVId F. LOnG was a professor of history at the University of New Hampshire and the author of Sailor-Diplomat: A Biography of James Biddle, and Ready to Hazard: A Biography of Commodore William Bainbridge. He died in 2001.

By Charles Lee Lewis

The second volume of this authoritative biography examines the last ten years of David Glasgow Farraguts life, focusing on the Civil War. Farraguts courage was tried as much as the Confederate Navy as by gross inefficiency and waste in the conduct of war, lukewarm support of the federal government, lack of cooperation between the Army and Navy, and poor morale caused by war weariness and disease. In the face of these challenges Farragut proved to be a resourceful leader and fighter whose loyalty to the Navy and his country proved him worthy of being Americas first admiral.

The Seven Great Navies of the Second World War

By John B. Lundstrom
On May 7 and 8, 1942, fast carrier task forces from the United States and Imperial Japan met in combat for the first time in the Battle of the Coral Sea. THE ADMIRALS ADVANTAGE

U.S. Navy Operational Intelligence in World War II and the Cold War

By David M. Finkelstein
The declaration of the Peoples Republic of China in October 1949 presented American foreign policy officials with two dilemmas: How to deal with the communist government on the mainland and what to do about Chiang Kai-sheks Nationalist regime on Taiwan. By 1950, these questions were pressing hard upon U.S. civilian and military planners and policy makers, for it appeared that the Red Army was preparing to invade the island. Most observers believed that nothing short of American military intervention would preclude a communist victory. How U.S. officials grappled with the question of what to do about Taiwan is at the heart of Washingtons Taiwan Dilemma.

By Christopher Ford and David Rosenberg Foreword by Adm. Jonathan Greenert, USN
Operational intelligenceknowledge of the enemys location and actionsis crucial to effective military operations. Now in paperback, The Admirals Advantage offers a revealing look at naval operational intelligence based on the findings of a classified Operational Intelligence (OPINTEL) Lessons-Learned Project and a 1998 Symposium at the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center. Participants included senior intelligence and operational leaders who explored the evolution and significance of OPINTEL since World War II.

Marines, Sheikhs, and the Battle Against al Qaeda

A compelling accountFallujah Awakens is well worth the time of the small wars student looking to hone his craft, Iraq veterans still coming to terms with the totality of that conflict, and any other student of military history. Marine Corps Gazette Fallujah, the cradle of an insurgency that plunged Iraq into years of chaos and bloodshed, conjures up images of the brutal house-to-house fighting that occurred during the 2004 U.S. invasion of the iconic city. The violence peaked again two years later when American Marines and Iraqi government forces struggled with a reinvigorated insurgency and the prospect of premature withdrawal by U.S. forces. Now in paperback, Fallujah Awakenswidely praised for presenting a balanced description of this crucial transition from both the American and the Iraqi perspectivesrecounts the complex story of the remarkable turn around that began to take place in 20062007. As an embedded journalist, Bill Ardolino was in a unique position to observe and explain how local tribal leaders and U.S. Marines forged a surprising alliance that enabled them to secure the heavily contested battleground. Based on more than 120 interviews with Iraqis and Americans, he explores how a company of reservists, led by a medical equipment sales manager from Michigan, succeeded where previous efforts had stalled. Circumstance combined with smart leadership enabled Marines to build relationships with members of a Sunni tribeonce written off as dangerous and intractablewho pushed al Qaeda and other insurgents from their notoriously rebellious area.

Accidental killings, intertribal rivalries, insurgents, and intrigue all conspired to undo the tenuous alliance forged on Fallujahs peninsula. But the partnership was cemented after a Marine commanders risky decision to welcome nearly 100 injured civilians onto a secure American facility after a ruthless chemical attack by al Qaeda. Ardolinos exhaustive documentation will prove valuable to military students, analysts, and historians and will help policy makers better understand what is and is not possible in counterinsurgency. Photographs and maps further enhance the readers understanding of the struggle for Fallujah, from tribal dynamics to the geography of firefights. By James E. Wise Jr. and Scott Baron

Throughout American military history there have been incidents whereby men and women of all the armed services have run afoul of the system. Questionable Conduct recounts stories of individuals who found themselves in an adversarial position with the United States military. Each legal case is unique in circumstance, but all have in common the component of soldiers versus the military hierarchy. Some individuals were acquitted and others were convicted, with penalties ranging from imprisonment to death. A portion of incidents were covered up by the military or by superiors. What is similar about all of the cases is that each one serves as an illustration that ensuring military justice, especially in the midst of armed conflict, is both a challenge and a necessity in a free society. JAMES E. WISE Jr., was a former naval aviator, intelligence officer, and Vietnam veteran. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a captain. His books include Stars in Blue and U-505 among many others. He passed away in July 2013. SCOTT BArOn served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and is the author of They Also Served and seven books with co-author James Wise, including Women at War, Dangerous Games, Silver Star, and The 14-Hour War. He teaches the about the U.S. Constitution in Salinas, CA.

WHIPS TO WALLS

Naval Discipline from Flogging to Progressive Era Reform at Portsmouth Prison

By Rodney K. Watterson Foreword by Rear Adm. John D. Hutson, USN (Ret.)

When flogging was abolished in 1850, the U.S. Navy established a prison system that culminated with the opening of Portsmouth Naval Prison in 1908. It soon became the focal point for reformers who sought to change outdated means of punishment. Led by Thomas Mott Osborne, cell doors remained opened, inmates governed themselves, and thousands of rehabilitated prisoners returned to service. Championed by Josephus Daniels and Franklin Roosevelt, Osbornes reforms proceeded positively until Vice Adm. William Sims and others became convinced that too many troublemakers returned to active duty. An investigation of conditions at Portsmouth prison resulted charges of gross mismanagement and rampant homosexual activity. Although exonerated, Osborne resigned and initiatives were quickly reversed as the Navy returned to a harsher system. CApT. ROdnEY K. WATTErSOn, USN (RET.) is the author of 32 in 44: Building the Portsmouth Submarine Fleet in World War II. He lives in Hampton, NH.

The New Perspectives on Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology series is devoted to exploring the significance of the earths waterways while providing lively and important books that cover the spectrum of maritime history and nautical archaeology. Limited by neither geography nor time, volumes in the series contribute to the overall understanding of maritime history and can be read with profit by both general readers and specialists alike.

CRISIS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

By Jon K. Hendrickson

Naval Competition and Great Power Politics, 19041914

HOME SQUADRON
By James C. Rentfrow

The U.S. Navy on the North Atlantic Station

Prior to July 1914, the extensive British grip on the Mediterranean Sea was beginning to weaken, leading to a wide-open competition between Austria-Hungary, Italy, France, and Great Britain. This change, Hendrickson contends, was driven by three largely understudied events: the weakening of the British Mediterranean Fleet to provide more ships for the North Sea, Austria-Hungarys decision to build a navy capable of operating in the Mediterranean, and Italys decision to seek naval security in the Triple Alliance after the Italo-Turkish War. These three factors radically altered the Mediterranean balance of power, forcing Britain and France to come to a mutual accommodation and accelerate ship construction to defend their respective interests in the region. However, the July Crisis and the ensuing World War obscured these events, leading later historians to ignore these events. JOn HEndrICKSOn is a PhD in military history from The Ohio State University. He was the first Class of 1957 Fellow in Naval History at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Home Squadron examines the transformation of the U.S. Navy as a fighting organization on the North Atlantic Station between 1874 and 1897. At the beginning of this period, the warships assigned to this station were collectively administered by a rear admiral but were operationally deployed as individual units, each of whose actions were directed by their captains. In 1894, the last of the wooden ships had been replaced, and the Squadron consisted entirely of new steel warships and conducted regular fleet exercises. By 1897, the North Atlantic, or Home Squadron, as it was known, transformed into a protean battle fleet, moving and fighting in close-order under the immediate direction of a commanding admiral. This transformation resulted in a new organizational identity for the North Atlantic Squadron on the eve of the Spanish American War. Cdr. JAMES C. REnTfrOW is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park. He currently teaches U.S. and naval history at the Naval Academy.

ADMIRAL DE GRASSE AND AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE

By Charles Lee Lewis
Admiral Franois Joseph Paul, Comte de Grasses defeat of the British fleet in the battle off Cape Henry in 1781 set the stage for the independence of the thirteen American colonies. This biography places this supremely important naval battle off the Virginia Capes in its proper historical perspective and gives the French admiral full credit for making Cornwallis surrender possible at Yorktown. George Washington fully recognized this aid, when he wrote to de Grasse and expressed his gratitude in the name of America for the glorious event for which she is indebted to you. The battle off Cape Henry was only one of many battles fought by this dashing Gallic sea captain, who fought in all the wars of his day, the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years War, and the War of the American Revolution. CHArLES LEE LEWIS, born in 1886, was a prominent naval historian and a professor of English and history at the U.S. Naval Academy. He wrote noted biographies of Matthew Fontaine Maury, Adm. Franklin Buchanan, David Glasgow Farragut, and Comm. Stephen Decatur.

HOW DARK THE NIGHT

A Novel By William C. Hammond
Drawing on five years of historical research and a lifetime of sailing, Hammond vividly recreates an early chapter in American history. Publishers Weekly William Hammonds award winning series carries on the tradition of Patrick OBrian and C.S. Forester. It is the only nautical fiction series that offers the American perspective during the Age of Fighting Sail. How Dark the Night continues the seafaring adventures of the Cutler family by picking up the action where the fourth volume, A Call to Arms, ends in 1805. The years leading up to the War of 1812 were devastating ones for the young republic. The life-and-death struggle between Great Britain and France caught the United States in a web of financial and political chaos as President Jefferson and Secretary of State Madison labored to keep the unprepared United States out of the conflict without compromising the nations honor. On the home front, Jeffersons embargo threatened the livelihood of the Cutlers and other New England shipping families as merchant ships rotted on their moorings and sailors sat penniless on the beach. Far worse for the Cutler family is a grave illness that threatens the life of its most beloved member. Like previous books in the series, the action in How Dark the Night is brought to life by such colorful historical figures as the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte, Secretary of the Navy Robert Smith, Robert Fulton and his prototype for a submarine, Capt. Stephen Decatur, Capt. Salusbury Pryce APRIL Humphreys, RN, and Comm. James Barron. 224 pp., 6 x 9 Historical events include the decline of slavery in the Hardcover: $34.95 ISBN: 978-1-61251-467-3 West Indies, the stark political differences between Fiction 18th Century the Federalists in New England and the War Hawk Republicans in the South and West led by Henry Clay and John Calhoun, as well as the abuses at sea perpetrated by the Royal Navy against America. Such abominations reach a war footing after the so-called affair between the USS Chesapeake and HMS Leopardas related from the British point of view through the eyes of Seth Cutler, a midshipman serving in Leopard. WILLIAM C. HAMMOnd is a novelist and freelance editor. A lifelong student of history and sailing enthusiast, his first novel in the Cutler chronicles, A Matter of Honor, was published in 2007, followed by For Love of Country in 2010, The Power and the Glory in 2011, and A Call to Arms in 2012. He lives in Wayzata, MN. I highly recommend this historical fiction series. Its as good as the novels of Patrick OBrian Hammond is a master writer of nautical fiction whose literary gifts are yours to enjoy. Good Old Boat As always, the naval, family, and political threads are woven together in an excellent, well-written, and believable narrative by the author as [Hammond] explores the early history of the young nation. Not only did they pose a very real danger to the ships of the Royal Navy, but they were also a serious threat to Britains transatlantic trade. This volume traces the development of the class from inception to destruction and provides detailed technical specifications for the ships with notes on design and layout as well as their service histories. This lavishly illustrated book is a complete and indispensable guide to these two extraordinary warships.

Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were the products of a long, involved, and politically-determined design process that witnessed this class of battleships develop from an improved Pocket Battleship to what many described as a battlecruiser. These ships were the most active, and successful, of the Kriegesmarines major warships, took part in numerous famous operations, including the infamous Channel Dash, and played a key part of Germanys struggle to wrest control of the sea at the outbreak of World War II. Each was superbly equipped and armed, and designed to cause maximum disruption to Allied shipping. This reference book traces their history, accompanied by outstanding technical drawings and precise specifications.

HEAVY CRUISERS OF THE ADMIRAL HIPPER CLASS

By Gerhard Koop and Klaus-Peter Schmolke

This volume covers the three ships of a design so revolutionary that it defied conventional categories. Deutschland (later renamed Ltzow), Admiral Scheer and Admiral Graf Spee were simply termed panzerschiffe (armored ships) by the Germans, but they were known to their opponents by the far more evocative term Pocket Battleships.

This volume covers the Admiral Hipper class, among the largest heavy cruisers to serve in World War II. Intended to be a class of five, they enjoyed contrasting fortunes: Seydlitz and Ltzow were never completed; Blcher was the first major German warship sunk in action; Admiral Hipper became one of the most successful commerce raiders of the war; while the Prinz Eugen survived to be expended as a target in one of the first American nuclear tests in 1946.

SOUTH PACIFIC CAULDRON

By Alan Rems

World War IIs Great Forgotten Battlegrounds

While the Pacific War has been widely studied by military historians and venerated in popular culture through movies and other media, the fighting in the South Pacific theater has, with few exceptions, been remarkably neglected. Worthy of remembrance no less than Wake Island, Leyte Gulf, and Tarawa are the great unsung battlefields of Buna, Shaggy Ridge, and the Driniumor River on New Guinea, the torpedo-infested waters off New Georgia, and the deadly skies over, Rabaul and Wewak. Authoritative, yet written in a highly readable narrative style, South Pacific Cauldron is the first complete history embracing all land, sea and air operations in this critically important sector of that oceanic war. Unlike most other World War II accounts, this work covers the South Pacific operations in detail, including the little-known, final Australian campaigns that continued until the Japanese surrender. Author Alan Rems breathes life into the major figures of the South Pacific campaigns, including brilliant and imperious Gen. Douglas MacArthur, audacious and profane Adm. William Bull Halsey, and bibulous and indelicate Australian Gen. Thomas Blamey. No less interesting are others that will be mostly new to readers, including many from the Japanese side, like the indomitable generals Noboru Sasaki and Hatazo Adachi. As for the fighting men, many of their stories are captured in accounts of the actions for which some were awarded the Medal of Honor, Victoria Cross, and other decorations for valor.

EXPLOITING AFRICA

The Inuence of Maoist China in Algeria, Ghana, and Tanzania

IN DEFENCE OF NAVAL SUPREMACY

Finance, Technology, and British Naval Policy 18891914

By Donovan C. Chau
Exploiting Africa examines Chinas role in Algeria, Ghana, and Tanzania from the 1950s to the 1970s. The Chinese arrived in Africa with little fanfare, yet they achieved an active presence that was more pragmatic than revolutionary. Though often couched in ideological rhetoric, Chinese goals in Africa were those of an aspiring world power. China skillfully used its limited diplomatic, intelligence, and economic means to shape events and to exploit its relationships to gain lasting influence on the continent. It is crucial to understand the nature and character of Chinas historical actions in Africa in order to properly grasp the nations current and future policies. Rather than merely looking forward, one must look backward to comprehend the true nature of China in Africa.

In his groundbreaking work, In Defence of Naval Supremacy, Sumida presents a provocative and authoritative revisionist history of the origins, nature and consequences of the Dreadnought Revolution of 1906. Based on intensive and extensive archival research, the book strives to explain vital financial and technical matters which enable readers to observe the complex interplay of fiscal, technical, strategic, and personal factors that shaped the course of British naval decision-making during the critical quarter century that preceded the outbreak of the First World War.

SHIP OF GOLD
A Novel

By Ward Carroll
Tom Clancy meets Joseph Heller in this riveting, irreverent portrait of the fighter pilots of todays Navy. At last somebody got it right. I couldnt put it down. Stephen Coonts Punks War reveals the inner workings of the Navy as only an insider can. An authentic and riveting thriller, it is a highly acclaimed novel of a fighter pilots experiences in the era just before 9/11. As the U.S. military currently enters another post-conflict period, the themes of leadership during crisis and accomplishing the mission make Punks War more relevant than ever.

By Thomas B. Allen and Norman Polmar

In 1945, the U.S. submarine Tigerfish mistakenly torpedoed and sunk a Japanese merchant ship. Reportedly carrying supplies to allied POWs, the ship had been given safe passage, but was actually a cunning ruse devised by a powerful secret society to transport tons of gold out of Japan under the very eyes of the enemy. Some thirty years later, the captain of the Tigerfish is murdered in Washington. As the CIA launches its investigation into his death, a race to raise the ship and recover its treasure begins, which mounts to an international incident involving the U.S., China, the Soviet Union and Japan. This taut thriller provides the behind-the-scenes reality of the national security system at work and is must-reading for fans of Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin.

BRITISH AIRCRAFT CARRIERS

Design, Development and Service Histories By David Hobbs
British Aircraft Carriers provides the most comprehensive treatment of the design and development of aircraft carriers ever published. The book is a meticulously detailed history of British aircraft-carrying ships from the earliest experimental vessels to the new Queen Elizabeth class, now currently under construction and designed to be the largest ships ever built for the Royal Navy. Separate chapters cover the design and construction of each class of aircraft carrier, with full technical details and extensive summaries of every ships career. Apart from the obvious largedeck carriers, the book also includes seaplane carriers, escort carriers and Merchant Aircraft Carrier (MAC) ships, maintenance ships built on carrier hulls, un-built projects, and the modern Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH). It concludes with a look at the future of naval aviation, while numerous appendices summarize related subjects like naval aircraft, recognition markings, and the circumstances surrounding the loss of every British carrier. As befits such an important reference work, it is heavily illustrated with a magnificent gallery of photos and plans, some reproduced in color.

BATTLESHIP RAMILLIES
A Last Salvo

HITLERS GATEWAY TO THE ATLANTIC

German Naval Bases in France, 19401945

Edited by Ian Johnston with Mick French

HMS Ramillies was the last battleship to join the Royal Navys Grand Fleet in 1917 and survived to fight in World War II. Named in honor of an 18th century victory by the Duke of Marlborough, Ramillies was actively employed by the Royal Navy for the duration of the war, and even survived being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. This book, produced with the full cooperation of the HMS Ramillies Association, is a tribute to the ship in words and photographs, deftly assembled from a combination of interviews with surviving crew members, carefully researched diaries and written accounts by those connected with the ship. One notable crew member is HRH, The Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. Ramillies was his first ship. Many personal photo albums provide previously unpublished illustrations, which add a further dimension to a vivid picture of naval life in an almost-forgotten era.

By Lars Hellwinkel
Employing new research from both German and French sources, Lars Hellwinkle examines the role French Atlantic ports played for the Kriegsmarine during World War II. When France was overrun in 1940, the German navys dream of access to the Atlantic was realized, and Brest, Lorient, St. Nazaire, La Pallice and Bordeaux were converted into naval bases for surface, U-boat and auxiliary cruiser operations. The book describes the extent to which the French, both locally and at the level of the Vichy Government, cooperated with the German authorities in occupied France to convert the ports. Also detailed is the vicious British maritime and air campaign that began immediately following the fall of France, and which was far more effective than has been previously suggested. A highly readable account, this book is illustrated with many previously unpublished photos.

IAn JOHnSTOn is the author of many well-regarded naval books, the most recently published being Clydebank Battlecruisers and The Battleship Builders, with Ian Buxton. For this project he worked with MICK FrEnCH of HMS Ramillies Association, selecting and editing the material.

LArS HELLWInKEL is a German naval historian who studied French and history at Brest and Kiel before joining the Kiel Maritime Museum in 2008. He has written for numerous publications on military topics.

SCOTLAND AND THE SEA

The Scottish Dimension in Maritime History

THE SEA WARRIORS

Fighting Captains and Frigate Warfare in the Age of Nelson

By Nick Robins
Scotlands maritime heritage is a highly significant one, embracing an outstanding contribution to Britains development both as an empire and the worlds leading naval power during the nineteenth century. Nick Robins tells an exhilarating story of energy and inventiveness, describing the remarkable navigational skills of the highlanders and the technological and business skills of the lowlanders. He recounts the early development of the steamship, the impact of emigration, exploration and development of trade routes, and the final flowering of the worlds last great iron sailing ships.

By Richard Woodman
The Sea Warriors is the true story of the great frigate captains of the Royal Navy during the Age of Nelson. From the French Revolution in 1793 to the end of the War of 1812, Englands seamen fought off French, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, Turkish and American navies to maintain control of the seas. Renowned novelist and historian Richard Woodman brings this struggle alive through the achievements of an extraordinary array of young, daring, and hugely skilled frigate captains who grasped the chances offered by war to become household names during such a savage age. Some, like Adm. Sir John Borlase Warren, Adm. Sir Israel Pellew, Adm. Thomas Cochrane and Vice Adm. Cuthbert Collingwood, are still renowned; others are rescued from under the shadow of Nelson as the author superbly recounts their brave and brilliant exploits.

EDGE OF VALOR
A Todd Ingram Novel By John J. Gobbell
Edge of Valor features the daring World War II exploits of Cdr. Todd Ingram. The action begins when Ingram, as captain of the destroyer USS Maxwell, must save his ship when it is hit by a kamikaze on the last day of the war. After retiring to Okinawa for repairs, news of the wars end comes and Ingram expects to be shipped home. Instead, Brig. Gen. Otis Dewitt, an Army buddy from his days on Corregidor, now an intelligence aide on Gen. MacArthurs staff, has orders for Ingram to accompany him to Manila on the same plane as sixteen Japanese senior military and civilian diplomats. In only two days, MacArthurs staff and the Japanese envoys negotiate the terms for Japans surrender. While Ingram is promised a place at the ceremony, DeWitt, in concert with the State Department, has other plans, and sends him to Sakhalin Island to defuse a Soviet attack on Hokkaido. Ingrams old adversary Edward Dezhnev is the officer responsible for laying siege to Japanese holdouts in Toro, a natural place to launch an attack on Hokkaido. Also at Toro, DeWitt explains, is Walter Boring, a Red Cross representative with two crates of irrefutable evidence of Japans experiments on live human beings in China. Ingram is expected to return with those crates, but how can he when Boring is being protected by the Japanese garrison in Toro, where Dezhnev and a Soviet brigade plan to destroy them? As shipmates are returning to the U.S., Ingrams war continues. Three weeks ago he was fighting the Japanese, and the Russians were friendly. Now he doesnt know who to trust.

The Navys Early Carrier Raids, FebruaryMay 1942

By Terry Howell Foreword by Salvatore A. Giunta, Medal of Honor Recipient

Written by Terry Howell, an expert on military benefits, this book is the most reliable benefits manual for the over 30 million Americans who have answered the call to serve in the military. These valuable benefits amount to billions of dollars in scholarships, educational benefits, home loan guarantees, and military discounts. This easy-to-use reference guide is full of insider tips, little-known benefits, shortcuts, and detailed answers to frequently asked questions. This book collects all of the available resources into one easy-touse guide and provides important analysis of these benefits to insure that all service members and their families are aware of the availability of all of these substantial benefits.

The War Begins examines the U.S. Navys carrier counterattacks after the disaster at Pearl Harbor. Admiral William F. Halseys Task Force 8, centered on the Enterprise, and Rear Admiral Frank Jack Fletchers Task Force 17, in the Yorktown, executed the first raid on Japanese positions on February 1, 1942, with attacks on the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. Raids on Rabaul, Wake Island and Marcus Island followed. The most daring carrier raid was the unorthodox Doolittle Raid on Japan itself, on April 18th, when 16 U.S. Army B-25 medium bombers launched from the Hornet. Though the carrier raids had limited material effect on Japans continuing advance in the Pacific, they yielded valuable operational experience for U.S. carrier forces, kept open the lines of communications to Australia, and boosted morale. The raid on Tokyo inspired the elaborate Japanese plan to occupy Midway Island in June, resulting in a major carrier battle and the U.S. Navys greatest victory. DAVId LEE RuSSELL is the author of six books including Eastern Air Lines: A History, 1926-1991. He resides in Milton, GA.

COMICS AND CONFLICT

Patriotism and Propaganda from WWII through Operation Iraqi Freedom

REBALANCING U.S. FORCES

Basing and Forward Presence in the Asia-Pacic

By Cord A. Scott
Illustration has been an integral part of human history. The comic book, which emerged in its modern form in the 1930s, was initially a form of simple, visual entertainment that gave readers, especially children, a form of escape from daily life. However, as World War II began, comic books evolved into a form of propaganda, providing information and education for both children and adults. Comics and Conflict examines how comic books were used to display patriotism, valor and adventure through war stories, and eventually to tell of the horrors of combat from World War II through the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Edited by Carnes Lord and Andrew S. Erickson

As the U.S. military presence in the Middle East winds down, the Asia-Pacific is receiving increased attention from the American national security community. In reaction to the startling improvement in Chinese air and naval capabilities over the last decade, the Obama administration has announced a rebalancing of the U.S. military posture in the region. This timely study assesses the implications of this shift for the long-established U.S. military presence in Asia and the Pacific. American presence is anchored in a complex basing infrastructure that is too often taken for granted. To remedy that neglect, this volume offers a detailed survey and analysis of this infrastructure, its history, the political complications it has frequently generated, and its recent and likely future evolution. By Geoffrey Bennett
This classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts that detail all of the principal naval engagements of the warbattles overseas, in home waters andfor the first timeunder the sea. Analysis of the strategy and tactics from both sides of the struggle is presented. Major battles outlined include Heligoland Bight, Dogger Bank, Jutland, and the British blockade strategy that kept the vast majority of its capital ships in the North Sea to contain the threat of the German High Seas Fleet. Bennett brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies vital contribution to victory.

ARCTIC WARRIORS

A Personal Account of Convoy PQ18

CONTRAILS OVER THE MOJAVE

By George J. Marrett

The Golden Age of Jet Flight Testing at Edwards Air Force Base

By Alfred Grossmith Mason Edited by Julie Grossmith Deltrice

Alfred Grossmith Mason served as a navigation/gunnery officer in the SS Empire Baffin, a 6,978 ton British cargo ship. Mason composed this remarkable diary during the journey of Convoy PQ18 as it transported essential war supplies from Great Britain to the Soviet port of Archangel during World War II. This record offers a graphic account of the perilous voyage, capturing the atmosphere of danger from both the enemy and the elements on the trek. Daily German attacks from the air and sea resulted in extended periods at action stations, depriving the seamen of sleep. The loss of many ships and comrades and the constant prospect of death through drowning took a physical and emotional toll. Having to function while exhausted, illnourished, and freezing cold demanded that every man give his utmost, yet remarkably, humor remained intact. ALfrEd GrOSSMITH MASOn joined the Merchant Navy in 1927 and continued in the service until 1976. After his death, JuLIE GrOSSMITH DELTrICE, his daughter, edited his diary.

George Marrett takes off where Tom Wolfes The Right Stuff ended in 1963. Marrett started the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB only two weeks after the schools commander, Col. Chuck Yeager, ejected from a Lockheed NF-104 trying to set a world altitude record. Marrett describes life as a space cadet experiencing 15 Gs in a human centrifuge, zero-G maneuvers in a KC-135 Vomit Comet, and a flight to 80,000 feet in the F-104A Starfighter. After graduating from Yeagers Charm School, he was assigned to the Fighter Branch of Flight Test Operations. Marrett takes readers into the cockpit as he tests the F-4C Phantom, F-5A Freedom Fighter and F-111A Aardvark. Whether the author is assessing a new aircrafts performance or describing the life and death experiences of test pilots, this look at the golden age of flight will thrill the reader. GEOrGE J. MArrETT is a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and on the Board of Trustees, National Test Pilot School. He was inducted in the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame and is the author of Howard Hughes: Aviator and Testing Death: Hughes Aircraft Test Pilots and Cold War Weaponry. Now retired, he lives in California.

RECONSTRUCTING A SHATTERED EGYPTIAN ARMY

Edited by Youssef Aboul-Enein

WHY THE JAPANESE LOST

By Bryan Perrett
Why the Japanese Lost tells the story of a nation that believed itself to be invincible, even as its military strength was systematically destroyed during World War II by the greatest industrial power in the world. Bryan Perrett details the Japanese method of fighting over the course of the Japanese Armys trajectory from the middle of the nineteenth century through the closing months of World War II. He covers various successes but more notably, flaws that resulted in the armys greatest failures. Confident after success at Pearl Harbor and in Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, Burma, the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies, the Japanese army was dangerously self-assured in its war fighting capabilities. Subsequently named The Victory Disease, Perrett argues that it was this arrogant complacency that led to the armys ultimate downfall. BrYAn PErrETT is a British military historian whose books include Why the Germans Lost and A History of the Blitzkrieg.

War Minister Gen. Mohamad Fawzis Memoirs, 19671971

The memoirs of Gen. Mohamed Fawzi, Egyptian War Minister from 1967 to 1971, first published in 1984, have not been available in English translation until now. Fawzis valuable ideas planted the seeds for the 1973 Yom-Kippur War that nearly spelled disaster for Israel and brought the worlds superpowers to the brink of war. In this series of essays written for Infantry Magazine, Aboul-Enein brings to life the military thoughts of this influential Arab war minister, providing Americas military leaders with insight into his thinking, strategy, and tactics.

THE SLOOP OF WAR

16501763

WARSHIP 2014
Edited by John Jordan, with Stephen Dent
The 36th edition of this highly acclaimed annual maintains well-established standards of scholarship, research, news and reviews from the field of warship history. This edition features articles on a range of diverse subjects, including: A detailed technical description of the Queen Elizabeth (CVA-01); a review of the careers of Germanys Braunschweig and Deutschland classes; the development of the Italian aircraft carrier Cavour; the conception and characteristics of the armored cruisers of the IJN; an account of the escape of the Jean Bart from Saint-Nazaire; the career and loss of the submarine Mariotte; the origins and tortuous progress to completion of the IJN light carrier Ryj; the history of Russias turret frigates of the Admiral Lazarev and Admiral Spiridov classes and a examination of the post-war evolution of fire control in the Royal Navy. JOHn JOrdAn has been associated with the Warship series from its beginnings and took over the editorship in 2004. He recently co-authored French Battleships, 192256. STEpHEn DEnT is the assistant editor of Conways Warship annual. He also edited Conways The War at Sea.

By Ian McLaughlan
This is the first in-depth study of the Royal Navys sloops, a vital, but largely ignored small craft. In the age of sail, these sloops were built in vast numbers and greater variety than the more regulated major warships. As a result, historians have encountered a particular challenge when attempting to formulate a coherent design history. Now for the first time, Ian McLaughlin charts the development of the ancillary types, variously described in the seventeenth century as sloops, ketches, brigantines, advice boats and even yachts, as they coalesce into the single eighteenth century category of Sloop of War. While visual documentation is scanty, this book draws together a unique collection of rare images, coupled with the authors own reconstructions in line drawings and watercolor sketches to provide the most convincing depictions of the appearance of these vessels. IAn MCLAuGHLAn is a retired British Army officer with a keen and active enthusiasm for small-boat sailing. From this passion, he developed a profound interest in the rigs, design and operations of the Royal Navys smallest combatants. A decade of study has resulted in this book.

INTERNATIONAL LAW FOR SEAGOING OFFICERS

6th Edition

MILITARY STRATEGY
By J. C. Wylie

A General Theory of Power Control

By Craig H. Allen
Allen, the author of Farwells Rules of the Nautical Road, brings clarity and context to international law for the seagoing professional. This book is the only work that addresses the international law of the sea from the perspective of the United States (which is one of the few nations that is not a party to the comprehensive 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea). Following an introduction to public international law and a short history of the law of the sea, chapters describe the rules that apply in ports and in the adjacent maritime zones, including the territorial sea, exclusive economic zone, archipelagic waters and the high seas. Of greatest interest to the seagoing professional are chapters dealing with military and intelligence activities in the maritime domain, maritime law enforcement activities and the use of force at sea.

Now available in paperback, Admiral Wylies analyses and opinions have long been of interest to military professionals, government leaders, journalists, commentators and scholars. Noted for a freewheeling mind, unhampered by orthodox military terms and the prevailing dogmas, this book on strategy has been valued for its astute and clearly stated arguments. No military service can long remain effective without searching self-criticism and continuous re-examination of its own ideas. Wylie, well known in the Navy, is a refreshingly and outspoken individual, thoroughly at home on the bridge of a ship, but equally at home in the semantics of dialectical discussion. Circle of Treason A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed By Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille
What makes this volume interesting is that it was written by longtime CIA insiders, who saw firsthand how the agencys network inside the Soviet Union crumbled. This book adds an insider perspective to the bookshelf. The Washington Post Circle of Treason has the advantage of being written by two intelligence professionals, not by academics or journalists, and thus is an authoritative account of the Soviet sources that were providing the U.S. with invaluable information during the Cold War until Ames betrayed them. The Wall Street Journal Grimes and Vertefeuille were two of the five principles of the CIA team tasked with hunting one of their own and were directly responsible for identifying Ames as the mole, leading to his arrest and conviction. 2013, 240 pp., 18 b/w photos, paperback, 6 x 9 ISBN: 978-1-59114-396-3 $19.95

CIRcLE OF TREASON

A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed By Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille NOW THE ABC TELEVISON NETWORK SERIES

Operation Red Wings and the Life of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, USN By Gary Williams

SEAL OF HONOR

The Naval Institute Press is excited about the longawaited air date for The Assets, an eight-part limited series, on ABC Television. The first episode will air at 10 PM EST on January 2, 2014. The series is based on Circle of Treason and the real life events surrounding the takedown of the infamous Aldrich Ames. Grimes and Vertefeuille were two of the five principles of the CIA team tasked with hunting one of their own and were directly responsible for identifying Ames as the mole, leading to his arrest and conviction. 2013, 240 pp., 18 b/w photos, paperback, 6 x 9
ISBN: 978-1-59114-396-3 $19.95

In the recently released major film Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg stars as Marcus Luttrell, whose New York Times bestselling memoir provided a compelling first-person account of the courage under fire displayed by his three fellow Navy SEALs after being ambushed by a vastly superior Taliban force the remote mountains of eastern Afghanistan.
