Tena koutou katoa - (Greetings to everyone) I sure hope youve enjoyed a very pleasant festive season and that your New Year has begun with a good start for a great 2014! There is a lot going on at this time of year as everyone emerges slowly from holiday-mode to work mode so take a good read of our newsletter. Im encouraging everyone to explore our local attractions and to get to know something of our outlying towns and villages. So Ive begun with Katikati this month. There is a new mention of the meetup groups on the networking and social connections page [4] so do look at that if you are interested in getting to know other persons with your spouse/partner. Please also note that if you need to learn English in a briefer time period, then one of the courses on this page will do the right thing by you. We also have an interesting few activities early this year for both newcomers and service providers while at the same time, always paying attention to the needs of employers of migrants as I work in the background for them.
Nga mihi

Katikati is a small town with a big heart. Back in the 2006 census it had a population of around 3600 people. The 2013 census shows 4054. The face of Katikati has changed a great deal in. However, some things change and others stay the same. An interesting annual event is - their A & P show is held on 2 February this year and costs only $5 for adults, $2 for school children and under 5s are free. Visit the website at http://katikati.org.nz/Events+Calendar/Febr Known as the Mural Town of NZ. uary+2014/2nd+Katikati+AP+Show.html Katikati is a town located on the Uretara Stream near the tidal inlet opened by Matakana Island in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Katikati was settled in 1875 by settlers from County Tyrone in Ireland through the Orange Institution. The settlement was established by the Irishman George Vesey Stewart, who led two groups of settlers there aboard the ships Carisbrook Castle and Lady Jocelyn. The land upon which the town was built was confiscated from local Mori after the land wars, and was given to the settlers by the Central Government. Katikati is known for its many murals painted on walls of commercial buildings, started in the 1990s as a project to regenerate tourist interest in the town and district, indeed the effort was recognised with the bestowal of New Zealand's 'Most Beautiful Small Town' award for towns of less than 8,000 population in 2005 by the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Society. There are hot springs three kilometres to the south of Katikati at Sapphire Springs. This next few months we shall attempt to encourage you to explore the locality in which you reside.
