Hey Kirko, Here is the translation of 'Sun Mere Bandhu re'. As I had mentioned it's a boatman's song.

A genre that was a great favourite with SD Burman. These songs have a deep strain of pathos and are native to Bengal. Esp. the erstwhile East Bengal now Bangladesh (an area where SDB spent is childhood and youth). He started his career singing these songs and he has used these tunes very often in Hindi films but not in their original form. He has given them his own touch. This is one of his true to form Bhatiyali adaptations If you want to know more about Bhatiyali then let me know.. I'll give you more stuff maybe offline. The translation of the song follows below Sun mere bandhu re sun mere mitwa sun mere saathi re ==================== Give me an ear my friend Give me an ear my sweetheart Give me an ear my companion Sun = Listen Bandhu, Mitwa, Saathi = different words for friend/sweetheart

STANZA 1 Hota tu peepal mein hoti amarlata teri tere gale mala ban ke padi muskaati Sun mere saathi re ============================================= Had you been the grand peepal(tree) and I would have been your eternal creeper I would have adorned your neck like a garland and smiled my life away Give me an ear my companion..... Peepal = dense tree with heart shaped leaves.. it's very common in the Indian countryside and provides shade amarlata = (Amar + Lata) = eternal + Creeper. Generally found hanging on the branches of peepal trees. Gale = neck Mala = Garland Muskati = would have smiled

STANZA 2 Jiya kahe tu sagar mein hoti teri nadiya leher beher karti apne piya se mil jaati re Sun mere saathi re ========================================= My heart wishes that you were the vast ocean and I your river I would have happily gurgled down and united with my sweetheart Give me an ear my companion... Jiya = Heart Sagar = Ocean Nadiya = river Leher = Waves piya = Sweetheart I can't really translate 'Leher beher' part which is basically a thing of poetic adornment in hindi. The connotation is that like a gentle, yet lively river I would have flowed with happiness in my heart and a bounce in my gait (like a wave in the river) and united with the ocean. 'Gurgling river' is more akin to 'kal kal karti nadiya'. But I can't think of an English translation to 'Leher beher karti'. In Hindi it is very evocative. This is yet another example of Shailendra's mastery. The simplicity of the lyrics enhance the depth of the emotions..The mood is of content, happiness, leisure and eternal bliss. And yes.. the most important thing Kiriko.... The lyrics of this song are feminie. So... there is no Dada Burman himself here in the picture :). He is just using his voice to depict the feelings of a young girl. Interestingly most of SD Burman's song are lyrically feminine! Mere Saajan hain us paar Ud gaya bhanwra kali udaas piya tune kya kiya re doli mein bithaike kahar dheere se jaana bagiyan mein All these songs are written for a female! I'll write about the boatman's songs another day if you like..... got to get back to work for now :)

Cheers Ritu
