Removing the Battery Latch Assembly Replacing the Battery Latch Assembly CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Before Working Inside Your Computer) before working inside the computer.
Removing the Battery Latch Assembly

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the hard drive (see Removing the Hard Drive). Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest). Remove the processor thermal-cooling assembly (see Removing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly). Remove the system board (see Removing the System Board). Remove the M2 x 2.7-mm screw from the battery latch assembly. When you remove the M2 x 2.7-mm screw, the battery latch release on the bottom of the computer will also be removed.

Remove the spring from the hook on the computer base by lifting it away with a screwdriver or a plastic scribe.

Remove the plastic battery-latch assembly by twisting the assembly slightly and lifting it out of the channel and away from the computer base.

Replacing the Battery Latch Assembly

1. Insert the latch assembly into the channel on the computer base, and press it into place. Using a small screwdriver, hook the spring over the hook on the computer base. Place the battery latch release under the computer base, line it up with the hole in the base, and then replace the screw in the assembly. Ensure that the newly installed latch moves smoothly and freely when pushed and released. Replace the system board (see Replacing the System Board). Replace the processor thermal-cooling assembly (see Replacing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly). Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest). Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly). Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Replace the hinge cover (see Replacing the Hinge Cover). Before You Begin

Recommended Tools Turning Off Your Computer Before Working Inside Your Computer This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the following conditions exist:

You have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Before Working Inside Your Computer. YouhavereadthesafetyinformationintheDellProduct Information Guide. A component can be replaced orif purchased separatelyinstalled by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.

Turning Off Your Computer

NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close any open files and exit any open programs before you turn off your computer.
1.
Shut down the operating system: Save and close any open files, exit any open programs, click Start Shut Down Shut down. The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process finishes. Ensure that the computer and any attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold the power button until the computer turns off.

Before Working Inside Your Computer

Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins. NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. NOTICE: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have a connector with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.

Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer). NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug it from the network device.

Disconnect any telephone or network cables from the computer. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets. Close the display and turn the computer upside-down on a flat work surface. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery before working inside the computer.

Slide the battery-bay latch release on the bottom of the computer. Remove the battery from the battery bay.

Flashing the BIOS

1.
Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly. NOTE: If you use a BIOS update program CD to flash the BIOS, set up the computer to boot from a CD before inserting the CD. The BIOS update program CD may not be available in your region. Insert the BIOS update program CD, and turn on the computer. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the computer will automatically reboot. Press <F2> during POST to enter the system setup program. Press <Esc Suspend>, select Save changes and reboot, and press <Enter> to save configuration changes. Remove the flash BIOS update program floppy or CD from the drive and restart the computer.

Bluetooth Card

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin. Locate the Bluetooth card cover. Press down on the cover's release latch. Rotate the cover to release it from the chassis. Disconnect the Bluetooth cable. Slide the Bluetooth card from the Bluetooth card cover.

1. Slide the Bluetooth card into the Bluetooth card cover. Connect the Bluetooth cable. Align the Bluetooth card cover and press down firmly into place.

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the hard drive (see Removing the Hard Drive). Remove the optical drive (see Removing an Optical Drive). Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest). Remove the six M2.5x 5-mm screws from the ExpressCard/hard-drive bay assembly.

Remove the assembly from the system board.
Replacing the ExpressCard/Hard-Drive Bay Assembly

1. At a 45-degree angle, insert the end of the ExpressCard/hard-drive bay assembly into its access hole on the side of the computer base. Lower the assembly aligning the screw holes on the assembly with the holes on the system board. Replace the six M2.5x 5-mm screws from the assembly.

Mini-Card
Removing a Mini-Card Replacing a Mini-Card If you ordered a Mini-Card with your computer, the card is already installed. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the ProductInformationGuide. Removing a Mini-Card
1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Disconnect the two antenna cables from the Mini-Card.

Release the Mini-Card by pushing the metal securing tabs toward the back of the computer until the card pops up slightly. Lift the Mini-Card out of its system board connector.

Replacing a Mini-Card
NOTICE: The system board and Mini-Card connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion. If you feel resistance, check the connectors on the card and on the system board, and realign the card. NOTICE: Make sure the antenna cables are not under the card when you insert it.

Insert the Mini-Card connector into the system board connector at a 45-degree angle.
2.
Press the other end of the Mini-Card into the securing tabs until the card clicks into place. Connect the black antenna cable to the connector labeled with a black triangle, and connect the white antenna cable to the connector labeled with a white triangle.

Coin-Cell Battery

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Insert a plastic scribe into the guide on the side of the coin-cell battery compartment, and pry out the battery.

Replacing the Coin-Cell Battery

1. When you replace the battery, insert it at a 30-degree angle under the clip with the positive (identified by a plus [+] symbol) side up, and then push it into place. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Replace the hinge cover (see Replacing the Hinge Cover).

Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly

Removing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest). Loosen in consecutive order the four captive screws, labeled "1" through "4," that secure the processor thermal-cooling assembly to the system board. NOTICE: To ensure maximum cooling for the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the processor thermal-cooling assembly. The oils in your skin reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal pads. Lift the processor thermal-cooling assembly and remove it from the system board.

Replacing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly

NOTE: If you are replacing the thermal-cooling assembly without removing and replacing a new processor, you can place the new thermal pad directly on any existing thermal pad already installed on the thermal-cooling assembly. It is not necessary to remove an existing pad or to clean the surface. Place the processor thermal-cooling assembly over the processor. Tighten the four captive screws, labeled "1" through "4," in consecutive order.

Display Assembly

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Close the display and turn the computer upside down. Remove the two M2.5 x 8-mm screws that hold the display to the bottom of the computer.

Remove the two screw covers from the back of the computer; then, remove the two M2.5 x 8-mm screws from the back of the computer.

Remove the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws on the display hinge. Disconnect the antenna cables from the Mini-Card and dislodge the cables from the antenna cable channel. Loosen the captive grounding-wire screw and dislodge the display cable from the display cable channel. Pull the pull-tab straight up to disconnect the display cable from the system board.

Lift the display up and away from the computer. NOTICE: The standby switch is fragile and easily broken. Avoid knocking the switch when removing and replacing the display.
Replacing the Display Assembly

NOTE: Ensure the display and antenna cables are not twisted and are clear of the computer base before replacing the display.

Place the display onto the computer base. Replace the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws in the display hinge. Securely route the display cable under the tabs in the cable channel. Connect the display cable to the system board and tighten the captive screw. Securely route the antenna cables under the tabs in the antenna cable channel. If a Mini-Card is installed, connect the antenna cables to the card (see Replacing a Mini-Card). Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Replace the hinge cover (see Replacing the Hinge Cover). Close the display. Replace the two M2.5 x 8-mm screws in the back of the computer and replace the two screw covers. Turn the computer over and replace the two M2.5 x 8-mm screws in the bottom of the computer.

Display Bezel

Removing the Display Bezel

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Remove the six rubber display bumpers. Remove the six M2.5 x 4.2-mm screws around the display bezel.

NOTICE: Removal of the bezel from the display back cover requires extreme care to avoid damage to the bezel.

Replacing the Display Bezel

1. Starting at any corner, use your fingers to gently snap the bezel into place to secure it to the display assembly. Replace the six M2.5 x 4.2-mm screws around the display bezel.

Replace the six rubber display bumpers around the display bezel.

Removing the Display Panel

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Remove the display bezel (see Removing the Display Bezel). Remove the eight M2 x 3-mm screws (four on each side of the display panel). Lift the display panel out of the display back cover.

Press in both sides of the top flex-cable connector, and pull the top flex-cable connector away from the display connector. Pull straight up on the pull-tab to disconnect the bottom flex-cable connector from the inverter connector.

Replacing the Display Panel

1. Reconnect the top display-cable connector to the top flex-cable connector. Reconnect the bottom flex-cable connector to the inverter connector. Replace the display panel inside the display back cover. NOTE: The eight screw locations are numbered. Replace the screws in sequential order.

Replace the eight M2 x 3-mm screws (four on each side) in order around the display panel. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).

Replace the spring that attaches the latch to the display panel. Align the latch with the display panel and slide the latch to the left to secure it into place.

To achieve zero functional defects and to display high-quality HTML.
Test Matrix
Any computer system can be used to complete the testing.
Issue Reporting
All issues should be logged on the report. Statements should include specific descriptions for each issue including the filename and the line number in the html code where the error is found. (Use the "Show line numbers" button in Homesite to identify line numbers.) .

Removing the Keyboard

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin. Open the display. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws at the top of the keyboard. NOTICE: The keycaps on the keyboard are fragile, easily dislodged, and time-consuming to replace. Be careful when removing and handling the keyboard. Lift the keyboard and hold it up and slightly forward to provide access to the keyboard connector. To disconnect the keyboard cable, lift the connector latch and slide the keyboard cable out of the keyboard connector on the system board. Remove the keyboard.

1. Holding the keyboard slightly above the computer, slide the keyboard cable into the connector on the system board and close the connector latch. Slide the tabs on the keyboard under the palm rest.

Replacing the Memory Module(s)

NOTICE: To prevent static damage to components inside your computer, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer's electronic components. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface. NOTE: To get maximum performance/dual-channel memory bandwidth capability, both memory module connectors must contain memory modules and the modules must be of the same size and configuration. NOTE: If a memory module is not installed properly, the computer does not boot.

Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot. Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and lower the module until it clicks into place. If you do not feel the click, remove the module and reinstall it.

Replace the memory module/modem cover and tighten the captive screws.
If the memory module/modem cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer. Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet. Turn on the computer. As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information.

Optical Drive
Removing an Optical Drive Replacing an Optical Drive Your computer ships with a fixed optical drive installed. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the ProductInformationGuide. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to drives, store them in a safe, dry place when they are not installed in the computer. Avoid pressing down on them or placing heavy objects on top of them.
Removing an Optical Drive

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. 2. On the bottom of the computer, remove the M2.5 x 8-mm device security screw labeled with a lock icon ( ).

Insert a screwdriver into the indentation for the device security screw, and push the notch on the metal tab toward the media bay to release the optical drive from the media bay.

Replace the optical drive (see Replacing an Optical Drive). Turn the computer top-side up and replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly). Removing the Processor Module Replacing the Processor Module CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: Do not touch the processor die. Press and hold the processor down on the substrate on which the die is mounted while turning the cam screw to prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and processor. NOTICE: To avoid damage to the processor, hold the screwdriver so that it is perpendicular to the processor when turning the cam screw. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Before Working Inside Your Computer) before working inside the computer.
Removing the Processor Module

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover). Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard). Remove the display assembly (see Removing the Display Assembly). Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest). NOTICE: To ensure maximum cooling for the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the processor thermal-cooling assembly. The oils in your skin reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal pads. Remove the processor thermal-cooling assembly (see Removing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly). NOTICE: When removing the processor module, pull the module straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the processor module.

To loosen the ZIF socket, use a small, flat-blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF-socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop.

NOTE: The ZIF-socket cam screw secures the processor to the system board. Take note of the arrow on the ZIF-socket cam screw, which indicates the direction to turn the cam screw. Lift the processor module from the ZIF socket.

Replacing the Processor Module

NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor module. Seating the processor module properly in the ZIF socket does not require force. NOTICE: A processor module that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the processor and ZIF socket. NOTE: If you have ordered a new microprocessor, you will receive one of the following: a new thermal-cooling assembly which will include an affixed thermal pad; or, you will receive a new thermal pad along with a tech sheet to illustrate proper installation. Align the pin-1 corner of the processor module with the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket, and insert the processor module. NOTE: The pin-1 corner of the processor module has a triangle that aligns with the triangle on the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket.

You must position the processor module correctly in the ZIF socket to avoid permanent damage to the module and the socket. When the processor module is correctly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the module are higher than the others, the module is not seated correctly. Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the processor module to the system board. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest). Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the Display Assembly). Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard). Replace the hinge cover (see Replacing the Hinge Cover).

1. Route the speaker cable back through the routing clips and connect the speaker cable connector to the system board. Align the speakers on the screw holes for securing the speakers to the computer base. Replace the two M2.5 x 5-mm screws to secure the speakers in place (one on each speaker).

The system board BIOS chip contains the Service Tag, which is also visible on a barcode label on the bottom of the computer. The replacement kit for the system board includes a CD that provides a utility for transferring the Service Tag to the replacement system board.
