Special features for outstanding performance

Attractive air inlet grille enhances
unit appearance, while also covering the filter opening.
High performance compressors
deliver quiet, reliable, extra cooling capacity at low cost. Compressor motor protection is assured
by quick-sensing elements that prevent trouble before it starts.
High-efficiency, tube-in-tube condensers provide maximum exposed
heat transfer surface for greater
heat rejection with less water.
Space-saver slab-type evaporator
coils provide peak heat transfer
efficiency with large coil face area.
Fins are mechanically bonded to
nonferrous seamless tubing for highcapacity performance.
Quiet fan performance large volumes of indoor air are moved quietly, at lower rpms than most
comparable fans. Compact housing
and specially designed discharge
air section provide superior air handling capability.
NOTE: Model 50BU006 40 has
the capability to cycle fan with compressor operation for improved
operating efficiency.
Crankcase heaters in 50BT008 and
all 50BU sizes remain on during
compressor off cycle. This prevents
dilution of oil by refrigerant, and
flooded starts.
Convenient electrical control center
contains all factory pre-wired control devices.

II Select unit(s) based on cooling requirements.

A. Water-Cooled Selection Method 50BT
Enter the cooling capacity tables for unit at 4000
cfm, and read down to the section displaying capacities with 85 F ewt. Find capacity closest to design requirements and read over to find required
gpm. For our example:
Unit selection 50BT012. Selected at 4000
cfm of 82 F/67 F entering air.
TC 122,100 Btuh
Corrected SHC 95,636 Btuh (See SHC
Correction Table, page 7.
Compressor Power Input 9.23 kW.
Condenser: Pressure Drop 4.8 ft wg,
2.0 psig.
ewt
85 F
gpm
20.0

B. Air-Cooled Selection Method 50BU

Enter the cooling capacity tables for units at 4000
cfm, and read down to the section displaying capacities at 95 F EAT.
Unit Selection 50BU012 with a 9AB12
remote air-cooled condenser selected at
4000 cfm.
82 F/67 F entering-air temperature 95 F
ambient.
TC 118,000 Btuh
SHC 93,336 Btuh (See SHC Correction
Table, page 7.
Compressor Motor Power Input 9.91 kW.
C. Determine Heating Capacity
Enter Heating Coil Rating tables, page 16, with
selected unit size and air cfm. Read data and correct as indicated.
200 F hot water selection:
TC 247,000 Btuh selected at 4000 cfm of 60
F entering air.
D. Fan Requirements
External static pressure (esp) required
(without plenum)
0.70 (in. wg)
Static pressure loss through
heating coil
0.14 (in. wg)
Total external static required
0.84 (in. wg)
Enter Evaporator Fan Performance table, page 17
with selected unit size, cfm, and static pressure required to obtain the following data:
For 50BT012 at 4000 cfm and 0.84 esp, by
interpolation the fan operates at 877 rpm and
requires 1.90 brake horsepower.
Since Model 50BT012 standard motor horsepower
is 2.0, it will produce the necessary cfm and esp
for this job.
For 50BU012 at 4000 cfm and 0.84 esp Fan
operates at 887 rpm and requires 2.27 brake horsepower. If this unit is a cooling-only unit, the
standard 112 hp motor will suffice, but the drive will
have to be field-supplied to produce the necessary
rpms. However, since this unit is to be used for heating, the motor nameplate should not be exceeded.
Therefore, the alternate 3 hp motor should be ordered and used with a field-supplied drive package.
If plenum is to be used, use esp drop for plenum
rather than the esp described above.

Performance data
Cooling capacity notes

SHC correction table

1. Water gpm values are calculated using a 0.0005 fouling

factor.
2. Direct interpolation is permissible. Do not extrapolate.
3. Gross capacities do not include deduction for indoor-fan
motor heat.
4. Ratings for 50BU units are based on 15 F of subcooling. For 0 F subcooling, reduce capacity by 7.5%.
5. All combinations use R-22. Unless otherwise designated,
ratings are at optimum charge.

SHC is based on 80 F db temperature of air entering the coil. Below

80 F db, subtract (corr factor x cfm) from SHC.
Above 80 F db, add (corr factor x cfm) to SHC.

NOTES (for Heating Coil Rating table):

1. Maximum allowable leaving air temperature 140 F.
2. Maximum operating limit for heating coils is 200 psig or 400 F.
3. To obtain capacities other than those given above, multiply the Btuh value from
the Heating Coil Ratings table by the proper value from the Heating Capacity
Factors table.
4. Formulas:
Btuh
Final temp (F) = edb (entering dry bulb) (F) +
1.10 x cfm
Btuh
Gpm =
500 x water temp drop (F)
5. Reduced airflow (dirty filters, loose or broken fan belt, etc.) over coil during
cooling cycle may result in freeze-up of nearby heating coil. Since units normally require a low-pressure switch cutout setting at about 5 F, use of a freeze-up
thermostat is recommended if heating coil is not drained or filled with an antifreeze solution.
6. Field-supplied thermostat and control valve are required when using accessory
heating coils.

Compressor and fan motor thermally protected.
Three-phase motors protected under primary single-phasing conditions.
Three-position selector switch functions as follows (except 50BU006 40, see
Note 14):
a. OFF
b. FAN ON
c. FAN and COOL ON
Outdoor-fan motor must not exceed 12 hp at 120 or 230 v (50BU only).
If original wire must be replaced, Type 90 C or equivalent must be used.
Model 50BU006340 is equipped with Time GuardT II control.
The CLO locks out the compressor to prevent short cycling on compressor
overload and safety devices. Before replacing CLO, check those devices.
For 200/230-3-60-v units only, transformer is wired for 200 v. If 230-v power
supply is used, the transformer must be reconnected. Remove black (BLK)
wire from terminal 200 and connect it to terminal 230.

10. 50BT008 and all 50BU units have crankcase heaters.

11. Field-supplied disconnect switch per NEC required for all units.
12. Condenser (outdoor) fan relays are supplied with all 50BU units.
For 50BU006 40 units only:
13. For fan motor to cycle with compressor, fan switch must be in FAN CYCLE
position. For continuous fan motor operation, fan switch must be in FAN CONTINUOUS position.
14. Compressor switch must be in COOL ON position to energize compressor.
15. If compressor suction pressure does not drop and discharge does not rise to
normal levels at start-up, reverse any 2 compressor power leads and reapply
power to ensure compressor was not wired to run in reverse direction.

Operating sequence
All units When unit main power is on, and selector
switch is set at OFF, unit is completely deenergized (except
crankcase heater).
When selector switch is set at:
FAN Indoor-fan motor operates to provide ventilation.
COOL Indoor fan operates continuously (except
50BU006 40 which requires fan switch to be in the FAN
CONTINUOUS position). When thermostat closes (on demand for cooling) the outdoor-fan relay and compressor contactor are immediately energized. This starts the outdoor
fans and compressors and the crankcase heater deenergizes. The 50BT,BU012 is equipped with a 2-stage thermostat. The compressor starts with 2 cylinders unloaded on
first stage of thermostat cooling demand and loads to full
load upon demand from second stage of thermostat.
When thermostat is satisfied, compressor and outdoor
fans shut off while indoor fan continues to operate. The

compressor crankcase heater is then energized. The control circuit incorporates a current-sensing lock-out relay
(Cycle-LOC) that locks off compressor in the event any
safety device is activated (low-pressure switch, high-pressure
switch, or compressor overload).
If any compressor safety device opens, the compressor
shuts off. The outdoor-fan relay on 50BU units remains on
and condenser fan(s) continues to operate. Since unit is protected by Cycle-LOC feature, compressor does not restart
following any safety interruption, unless the thermostat is
satisfied without cooling in operation. Model 50BU006340
is equipped with Time Guardt II control, which provides a
5-minute time delay after unit is deenergized. This prevents
reverse rotation of the compressor scroll after a brief power
interruption. To reset Cycle-LOC control, turn the OFF/
FAN/COOL switch to OFF, then back to COOL. To reset
Cycle-LOC on 50BU006 40 models, push the compressor switch to COOL OFF, then back to COOL ON.

Application data
REFRIGERANT LINE SIZES (in. OD)

Refrigerant piping
For applications with condensers located above the cooling
unit, hot gas loops above condenser prevent liquid in condenser from draining at shutdown. Loops and check valves
in discharge line prevent oil and condenser refrigerant from
draining to compressor at shutdown. If condenser is below
the cooling unit, loop at condenser may be omitted. If piping runs prevent drainback, loops may be omitted.
Regardless of remote condenser location, a check valve
must be installed in the discharge line in each refrigerant
circuit, downstream from the hot-gas muffler, as close to
compressor as possible. The check valve prevents migration of refrigerant back to the compressor.
Refrigerant piping OD should not be smaller than unit
connection size.

The amount of liquid lift available before refrigerant flashing occurs depends on the amount of liquid subcooling in
the system.
All 9AB and 09DE condensers have positive subcooling
when applied with optimum charge. With subcooling, it is
possible to overcome an appreciable friction drop and/or
static head (due to elevation of the liquid metering device
above the condenser).
When 9AB and 09DE condensers are applied with minimum charge, no positive subcooling in condenser is realized; therefore, if subcooling is required it must be obtained
by external means.
The average amount of liquid lift available from 9AB and
09DE condensers is shown in accompanying table.

NOTES:
1. Pipe sizes should never be smaller than cooling unit connection sizes.
2. A nominal number of fittings has been considered in determining pipe sizes.
Smaller pipe sizes may be realized if pipe runs are simple and few fittings are
used. Use the Carrier System Design Manual, Chapter 3, or the E20-II piping
software program for sizing.

Winter start modifications

When starting 50BU air-cooled units (except 50BU004) under low-ambient temperature conditions, the compressor
may pull suction pressure down below low-pressure switch
cutout setting causing the compressor to shut off. At extremely low ambient temperatures, the low-pressure switch
may be open during the off cycle, preventing the compressor from starting. In these cases, winter start control is required as follows:
