Reopening Plan of Bartunha Mine
INTRODUCTION Chirimiri Coalfields is one of the important and oldest coalfields of central India. It is known for its good quality non-cooking coal. Major portion of good quality coal reserves is being mined out in different mines and Bartunga Hill mine is one of them.[Location] : The mine is situated the South-Western part of Chirimiri Coalfields covering an area of about 1.5Sq. Km. Western extension this hill is Anjan Hill . Administratively it is located in Manendragarh Tahsil of Korea District. It falls in survey of India Topo sheet No. 64 I/8 (Plate-I) The geographic co-ordinate of the block are: Latitude (N): 23 09 02 2310 10 Longitude (E): 82 10 00 - 8220 00 .[COMMUNICATION] The principal means of communication is the Anuppur-Chirimiri Rail line branching from the Bilaspur block is well connected by road from Manendragarh (43 Kms.) in the west and district Headquarter Ambikapur (132Kms.) in the east. Bilaspur is at a distance of 220Km. The nearest airport, Raipur is at a distance of 320Kms.[GEOMORPHOLOGY] Chirimiri coalfields is mainly occupied by ridge and valley topography. Flat topped hills are forming Mesa and Butte landforms. Anjan and Bartunga Hills have vertical cliffs on the southern portion. Height above M.S.L. around Bartunga Hill varies from 650 to 890 meters. The area is drained by Ghergera and Korea nalas.[VEGITATION AND CLIMATE] Bartunga and Anjan Hills are covered by considerable dense forest. It includes mainly Sal, Mahua, Tendu, Amla and Bija. Wild bear is the common animal found in forests. [Rainfall]According to the annual rainfalls map of India the area falls under the rainfalls zone 1001 to 2000mm.Presence of plenty vegetation and considerably good rainfall shown humid climatic condition of the area. Summer temperature rises above 43 and in winter the mercury drop below 4C. PREVIOUS WORK :The earliest geological work in Chirimiri Coalfields was carried out by Hughes in in 1885. He designated the coal measures of this area as Kurasia Coalfield after the name of a then existing village, Hughes examined only a part of the coalfields. Subsequently a detailed study was made by Former in 1913. J.L.Harris visited the coalfield a little earlier and reported about the presence of some workable coal seams. In twenties TISCO conduct detailed prospecting in two blocks viz.,Kurasia & Chirimiri leased with them. K.K.Dutta (GSI) resurveyed the coalfields of the Korea state during 1942-45. In post independence period Ventatsppayya and Sirkar (1948-49) collected information about the prospecting of different coalfields location in Korea. Indian Bureau of Mines in 1957 conducted some exploration in the area of late, the State Directorate of Geology and Mining (M.P.) conducted exploration in north Chirimiri and Chirimiri hill block. However, none of these explorations (drilling) covered Bartunga Hill. [REGIONAL GEOLOGY]: The Chirimiri Coalfields located in the southern part of erstwhile Korea State, has a unique physiographic feature. Unlike the other peninsular Gondwana basins, this coalfields is marked by high hills with steep scarp faces and deep gorges along the courses of steams the surrounding plains formed by Talchir sediments. The Chirimiri Coalfields is in Korea district of Chhattisgarh, covers an area of about 125 Sq. Kms. Between latitude 2308 and 2315 & longitude 8217 and 8225 .Bartunga Hill is situated in the south western part of the Chirimiri Coalfields (Plate I)The Chirimiri Coalfields, along with the Jhilmili and Bishrampur Coalfields, was
including in the northern coalfields of Chhattisgarh by FOX. Chirimiri part of the basin comprises entirely of Baraka sediments and forms a prominent outlier within the surrounding Talchir plain that stretches uninterruptedly from south to Sonhat-Sohagpur master basin to the southern periphery of the Patna-Khargaon plains. FOX has described the geology of the Kurasia Coalfields as very simple. On the north, around Chitajhore, dolerite flows overlie both the Talchir and Baraka sediments. The lower Gondwana formation of Chirimiri Colafields are separated from the main stretch of the coal measures of the Sohagpur-Sonhat master basin by a large tract of Talchir sediments and dolerite flows. The limit of Chirimiri basin to the northe is defined by a prominent flow of dolerite whereas, the western , southern and eastern boundary is marked by the presence of Talchir sediments, resting unconformable over PreCambrian. TALCHIR FORMATION :The Talchir Formation covers a large tract of the low laying plains surrounding the coalfields. Due to the unevenness of the basement, varying thickness of the Talchir sediments are preserved. The common rocks are the olive green shale and lemon yellow, fine grained sandstone. The sandstone is usually compact with unaltered felspars. Towards the top of the Talchir sequence a transitional zone is well defined. This zone is characterized by grey shale, interlbanded with green-shale. The grey shale, also on weathering, develop a distinctive greenish shade and break into splintery fragment. This transitional zone contains thick units of light grey, fine to medium grained sandstone, which at places, are indistinguishable from the overlaying barakar beds. BARAKAR FORMATION :This formation is represented dominantly by light grey, coarse grained sandstone, the cementing material of which is normally colonized feldspar. Lentacular bands of pebbly sandstone are common. The proportion of fine-grained sandstone is rather small compared to the bulk of the coarse classic detritus. The shale is typically grey and is rather insignificant in the sedimentary pile. Coal seams, however, define prominent horizons within the sandstone dominated cycles. The Barakar sequence displays typical fining upward fluvial cycles some of which are complete, while other are abbreviated. Ripple drift and cross-bedding are the two common primary depositional structures include channel, cut and fill of potholes. BASIC FLOWS, DYKES AND SILLS :Basic flows overlie the Barakar sediments and occur on tops of hills, giving rise to steep escarpment. A prominent sill defines the northern boundary of the Chirimiri Coalfields and continues northward into the Sonhat Coalfields. The maximum thickness of this sill is observed to the 118m. Some dykes have also been reported. Mega scopically basic flow is a hard compact with criss-cross arrangement of feldspar laths. This intrusive is a manifestation of the Deccan-Trap volcanacity and such thick flows (2m to 100m) are unique in the Gondwana basin. STRUCTURE: The Barakar sediments are sub-horizontal with gental rolls at a few place. This rolling nature of the strata may be ascribed to the undulations in the Pre-Barakar basement. The dips are confined to less then 3. Excep a few faults in Sajapahar area in the west and west Chirimiri in north, the Chirimiri Coalfields is free of faulting. PARTICULARS OF TE MINE In the mine there are four seams, among them Seam O is topmost seam and remaining number of lower seams are in ascending order. The seam O has already
been exhausted and sealed-off from main entries. The Seam-II is not workable as due to less thickness (<1m). Mining (Development & Depillaring by B & P Method) in Local seam , seam I & III are in progress. ENTRIES: The Seams are approached through Adits Viz., Anjan Drift, Loco line & Bogda Incline driven upto Seam III, and remaining seams are approached through Drift A & B driven up to Seam O and then the Local seam are approached two drifts driven between the parting. In No.I seam there are two entries through Adits No.6 & 7.In the mine there are two Airshaft one sunk upto Seam O and III act as upcast equipped with Axial Flow fan in exhaust mode. Other details of the fan are furnished in section. The mine is extensively developed The extent of development are as under: S.No 1. 2. 3. 4. HISTRY OF FIRE: Occurrence of fire in seam-III of this mine was noticed on 4th August 2010 at 12:30 PM through appearance of Carbon monoxide in fandrift. Attempts were made to identify location of fire and for its quick control. But could not get success subsequently rescue team noticed sound like blast/explosion with abnormal smell during inspection and also increasing trend of carbon monoxide in Fan drift. Ultimately a section of mine ( Seam-III) producing coal @300 tones per day , had to be sealed-off from main entries on 8th August 2010. The process of sealing was completed up to 22nd August 2010. At this juncture including prior to sealing mine management entrusted an assignment to the Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research [ CIMFR], Dhanbad for assessment of status of fire and advice for early recovery of the Seam -III of mine. CIMFR, DHANBAD, JHARKHAND took up the assignment and a team of scientists visited the mine on 6th August 2010 and provided scientific support in assessment of status of fire during inspection and sealing of the Seam-III. Again After sealing visited the mine and carried out investigation as discussed in subsequent paragraphs.
Since Fan drift, Bogda Incline and Borehole are close to each other, therefore Borehole has been selected as one of the monitoring point. Hence the assessment of status of fire is based on the results of from following three locations. 1. Stoppings in Anjan drift 2. Stoppings in Loco drift 3. Borehole at 7L/4D located further 140m in bye from Airshaft Bottom. Investigation in respect of study of pressure behaviour of the mine was studied through sampling point provided in stopping at Anjan drift during the periods 27th and 28th October, 2010. The results of analysis of air sample collected through above location have been analyzed and status of fire in the mine was assessed on the basis of different fire indices calculated using gas analysis results. The results of investigation are discussed as under:
Study of Pressure Behavior of the Mine. Pressure differential across stopping through sampling pipe provided in the stopping in Anjan drift was recorded with time. The results are graphically represented in Figures 1

PRESSURE ( mm wg)
The results of pressure behavior studies from Figures (1) revealed that Pressure of stopping in Anjan drift is negative and positive both depending on time and barometric pressure. Hence the pressure behavior of the mine is considered Normal. This may also be inferred that there is no continuous air leakage path in the mine from surface.

Remarks : Results from figure No. 2 to 4 revealed that : - Oxygen at sampling points , which are also air entering point for the mine, are in reducing trend particularly at Anjan & Loco drift - CO 2 at these sampling points are in increasing trend. - CO at these sampling points has reduced to zero since1 st week of September,2010 Hence this situation indicates formation of air exchange zone around the air entry points and it is beyond the location of seat of fire. In case of normal behavior of sealed -off area the fire gases will reach to the sampling points by diffusion only.
Further interpretation of status of fire based on air sample analysis results using different fire index ratio are discussed below 1.0 Gramh s Ratio [1914-15,1920]: Formula : CO (%) X100 This ratio is widely used particularly in Indian coal mines as criterion of the GR = [0.265XN2-O2] % stage of heating and fires in early as well as progressive development stage both Index value: < 0.5 Normal > 0.5 - < 1.0 Existence of Heating > 1.0 - < 2.0 Advance Stage > 3.0 Active Fire > 7.0 Blazing Fire

Merits : Since both numerator and denominator are affected, so the ratio remains independent to dilution of air or methane. Gives early detection of fire if it increases continuously. Assessing the status of fire.
Limitations : Does not give extent of fire i.e. amount of coal involved? Disappearance of CO does not mean complete extinction of fire. If the products of combustion are diluted by black damp (N2) or (O2) deficient air, the ratio would be affected.

Concluding Remark about the status of fire: Results from Figure 5 to 7 revealed that the value of Graham s ratio has reduced to zero from 2nd week of September, 2010 and is still continuing (April,2011) at Anjan and Loco drifts. Location of Borehole is nearest to the expected seat of fire and Graham s ratio is almost zero since December 2010. Hence the status of fire may be considered in extinguished state.

Hence based on the results of physical and chemical parameters mentioned above, the condition of fire may be considered in extinguished stage. However, possibility of presence of hidden hot spots blanketed by CO2 can not be ruled out. Therefore, the mine may be reopened with due precautions like controlled ventilation, suitable technique for quick isolation of fire/hot spot if any, treatment of fallen coal with inhibitors etc., against rekindling of fire.
APPROACH
In view of the above situations inside, methodologies for reopening & recovery of the mine, based on partial recovery approach, is proposed. The approach is mainly based on: I. Effective Ventilation Control II. Primary isolation of the area using improved methodology for erection of Brattice cloth stopping. III. Secondary Isolation by erection of CGI Sheet Stoppings with plugged leakage spot using Vent Seal IV. Construction of permanent Stopping using Red Brick/ hollow Brick/ RCC Brick V. Treatment of fallen Coal/ Carbonaceous materials by Inhibitors EFFECTIVE VENTILATION CONTROL Air quantity in the mine will be allowed to travel at minimum pressure value of mine water gauge. This will help in cooling of environment at slow rate in deficient oxygen zone. For this purpose either capacity of main fan is proposed to be reduced by reduction in pulley diameter of fan./motor. OR increase in surface leakage. Then adjustment of air flow rate in the mine with minimum leakage of air into Isolated area IMPROVED METHODOLOGY FOR ERECTION OF BRATTICE CLOTH STOPPING Conventional approach for primary isolation of any area against ventilation air is erection of Brattice cloth stoppings using wooden prop. It takes much time in transportation of wooden prop, sizing, leveling and fixing of prop etc. To reduce in erection time a Adjustable height telescopic GI Prop has been fabricated to use in place of wooden prop. Practically, A Brattice cloth stopping can be erected within 10 minutes time using this telescopic prop. Hence this technique is proposed to be use. View of Brattice Stopping erected in Underground using telescopic Prop.is shown below
Fig :
SECONDARY ISOLATION BY ERECTION OF CGI SHEET STOPPINGS WITH PLUGGED LEAKAGE SPOT USING VENT SEAL Some times Stoppings made of CGI sheet is found less effective due poor performance of air gap plugging materials used in filling of air gap at joints of two sheets and around the periphery. Generally, Wet earth Soil ( Mitti or Bentonite) is used for this purpose . This requires periodic application and difficult to maintain in dry air environment. Recently, A compound VENT SEAL has been used in one of the mine of Eastern coalfields Limited and found effective in controlling leakage through CGI sheet stopping. This compound or other Resign base compound of similar properties is proposed to use. A View of CGI Sheet stopping erected in underground is shown below
Since fine coal is present in heap of fallen coal. The reactivity of fallen coal is required to be reduced by cooling with water and treatment by chemical which have following properties:
I. Reduce surface Tension of Water. II. Easily soluble in Water
III. Reduce the reactivity of coal to Oxygen IV. Easy application over coal heap This chemical is proposed to use for treatment of fallen coal for retardate self heating process of coal in heaps.

UNDERGROUND ACTIVITY Since the mine is extensive therefore reopening ,recovery and sectionalisation operation may be divided into four Phases viz., 1,2,3,& 4, taking extent of development ,location of Entries, quantum of jobs involved, expected locations of hot spot, etc into consideration. Broadly the mine layout may be divided into two part i.e. one Northern part from (-)3xcut as reference line and another Southern part from the same reference line. Initially, attempts will be initiated to recover and sectionalize northern part. PHASE -1 The main objective in this phase is to Reopen the Mine from Fandrift & Locodrift and Recover the area in Bottom Section from loco Line to Air shaft and Closing of 27R TOP section working return of southern side at 9 & 10 Drifts.
The scope of the work under this phase includes; I. Establishment of FAB at Surface II. Opening of Fandrift and Bogda incline III. Starting of fan at Low Pressure. IV. Establishment of Ventilation Circuit from Bogda Incline to Air Shaft V. Underground Inspection through Bogda Incline By rescue Team up to Door and Drift 9 & 10 and attempt for closing the drift if possible VI. Opening of door at 9l/4&5 x-cut to establish ventilation circuit from Loco Drift to Airhaft along bottom section VII. Closing of 27R TOP section working return at 9 &b 10 Drifts. VIII. Support, cleaning and dusting of recovered area. Sequence of the steps proposed are given in Table .
