BAY Area
Conveniently located at the intersection of one of Japans major rivers and the Seto Inland Sea, throughout the centuries Osaka, which is known as the water city, was a principle center of trade and cultural exchange with not only other areas in Japan, but also parts of mainland China and the Korean peninsula. During the Middle Ages, the city was a base for religious pilgrimages to the many temples and shrines in the region and later came to be known as the nations kitchen on account of the central role that it plays in distribution. Today, Osaka is developing as a hub for the production of next-generation robots, combining a rich cultural past with a sophisticated high-tech future that provides countless attractions for visitors and residents alike.

From around the 5th century through to the 8th century, Osaka was declared the nations capital several times and played a major role in trade and cultural exchange. Later, the city served as a base for the pilgrimage routes to areas such as Kumano. Osaka Castle was constructed during the 16th century by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who managed to unify the various warring factions within Japan, and during the 17th century, the city became a center for trade and distribution activities and was referred to as the nations kitchen. Underpinning this prosperity were the citys resourceful and enterprising merchants, who introduced the worlds first futures trading system. The city is full of historic places, especially on the Uemachi plateau that runs north to south through the city. Osaka Castle and the remains of Naniwanomiya Palace are located in the north, Shitennoji, which is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, is located in the central area, and Sumiyoshi-taisha Grand Shrine, which is said to have been built in the 3rd century, is located further to the south.

The very best of produce and seafood can be found in Osaka. Good quality ingredients led to consumers developing discerning tastes, which in turn produced skilled chefs who were able to satisfy their needs. One of the characteristics of this sophisticated Osaka taste is the use of rich kelp and dried skipjack broth as a base in combination with a light soy sauce to bring out the inherent flavors of the ingredients. An ideal way to experience this flavor is to try a bowl of Osaka style udon noodles, such as kitsune udon, which consists of udon noodles in a broth with fried bean curd. The ultimate in terms of this unique Osaka style is kaiseki ryouri, a traditional Japanese style multi-course meal. Shokadobento (a traditional Japanese style multi-course boxed lunch) was created by Osaka chefs as a way for people to enjoy kaiseki ryori outdoors. Osaka style sushi is different from traditional Tokyo style sushi in that it is pressed or steamed. There are many kinds of nabe ryouri (traditional hot pot dishes), of which tecchiri ( fugu or blowfish hot pot) is a typical example. In addition to traditional dishes, more modern Osaka style food includes okonomiyaki (a savory pancake) and takoyaki (wheat flour dumplings with octopus). One can also find kushikatsu (skewered fried food), yakiniku (barbecued meat) and tempura. Visitors longing for food from their own country can probably find what they want, choosing from the rich variety of French, Italian, Chinese and other ethnic foods available.

Traditional Japanese sweets are still made in the city, and the scenery within the city still bears some resemblence to the Sakai of the middle ages, especially on account of the moats that still exists around the burial mounds.
In Nara boasts many beautiful locations, such as Asuka, where Buddhist culture first became established, and the expansive Nara Park. In addition, there are beautiful walkways that wind their way around the base of the mountains and places such as Hase, Murou and Yoshino, which is famous for its cherry blossoms.
