    Luella Miner was among the foreigners besieged by the Boxers in
    Peking. She was a professor at the American College at Tungchau,
    China located at the outskirts of Peking. She was held captive for over
    a year, with very little food and only a book and pencil to make the day
    go by.
    June 15: About ten o'clock the most horrible noise began in the southern city, just on the
    opposite side of the city wall. It was a horde of Boxers going through their rites, burning
    incense, crying, "Kill the foreign devils! Kill the secondary foreign devils! (Christians).
    Kill! Kill! Kill!" They called other things, but I could only distinguish the "kill!" There
    may have been from twenty to fifty thousand voices, not all Boxers, but they definitely
    were all Chinese welling that mad tumult. After two or three hours the noise suddenly
    ceased. The Boxers in their indiscriminate pillaging had looted a British bank. The
    British soldiers gathered there were all killed instantly.
    September 5: I overheard two Chinese Boxers talking today. One soldier stated the
    Boxers have now stolen from over 50 banks belonging to the devils. I also overheard,
    although I dont believe it, the soldiers saying the Boxers were responsible for over
    100,000 missionaries deaths, and the killing of many Chinese people who sympathized
    with the foreigners. In another two months, China will be reclaimed the soldier said.
    What will become of me? Until tomorrow.
    September 7: I watched from my window as I saw the Boxers train. They only used their
    fists. They kicked hard as they let out a ferocious sound. They punched like they could
    take the soul from the body they hit. They were very focused. Not even the nearby bird
    chirping could draw their attention away from their drive.

    Document 2 - Chinas Hardships and the Boxer Rebellion

    Defeated and embarrassed by westerners, the Chinese looked for
    ways to return China to its days of glory. In 1894, the Chinese began to
    send officials to England to study western technology and medicine.
    By 1896, using their new knowledge, China began setting up factories
    to make items quicker, and make modern (present-day) weapons.
    They developed steam-powered ships, built railroads, and began
    work in Chinese mines to search for coal. Additionally, the Chinese
    translated Western European literature, science, medicine, and laws.
    They wanted to learn Western technology, science, and medicine.
    They made the laws more simpler, so all people, educated or not,
    could understand it. They got rid of corrupt government officials, and
    replaced them. The new government built schools that were free for all
    children to attend. Military training camps was set up to teach soldiers
    how to fight, use new weapons like machine guns, and how to
    perform first aid. Most Chinese however didnt want to replace
    Chinese traditions with those of the British So by 1899, five years later,
    the Chinese thought they were educated, powerful, and ready to
    remove the British from the Europe; or so they thought.

    Anti-European feelings finally exploded in the Boxer Uprising. In
    1899, a group of Chinese had formed a secret society, the Righteous
    Harmonious Fists. Westerners watching them train with their fists
    in martial arts gave them the title of Boxers. Their goals was to
    remove the European devils who was ruining China, by bringing
    with them their strange culture, machines, weapons, outfits, religion,
    and language. The Boxers attacked the Europeans in China. In
    response to the Boxer Rebellion, seven European imperialists and
    the United States united together, and crushed the Boxers. Against a
    united Europe and U.S., the Boxers did not stand a chance. China
    once again had to admit defeat to Europeans. However, it was a
    wakeup call. If the Chinese wanted to compete with the Europeans,

    they would have to westernize, at least temporarily. Although the


    Boxer Rebellion failed, the flames of Chinese nationalism spread.
    Reformers wanted to continue to strengthen China. The Chinese held
    onto the belief that one day in the near future, China would have
    enough resources and power to remove the Western devils, and
    reclaim (take back) Chinas glory.
