Part of the sum was to be invested on one godchilds 12th birthday and part on the other godchilds 14th birthday. What sum would they each receive on their 18th birthday? Answer to the nearest RM. [5 marks]

2. A manufacturer produced 15,000 parts of computer equipment in one week but, because of damage, some parts were unfit for use. The manufacturer normally made a profit of 33 % on manufacturing costs by selling all the parts produced for RM 8 each but, because of the damaged parts, the profit was reduced to 30% of the manufacturing costs. (a) How many parts were damaged? [5 marks] (b) If the damaged parts were sold for scrap at RM 2 each what percentage of profit was made that week? [3 marks]

Currently, the company makes 12 orders per year with 200 units per order. The company operates 300 days per year. The lead time for an order to arrive is 5 days. (a) What is the annual inventory cost for the current policy? [2 marks] (b) If the company uses the optimal inventory policy, what would be (i) the optimal order quantity? [2 marks] (ii) the number of orders per year and the reodering point? [2 marks] (iii) the annual inventory cost? What is your recommendation for Cooks? [2 marks]

4. In a presidential campaign, there are two candidates, a Democrat (D) and a Republican (R), and two types of issues, domestic issues and foreign issues. 5. A factory can produce toys in three different colours; Red, Blue and Green. The time needed in hours for each item at the three manufacturing stages: assembling, polishing and painting are shown in the table below. The table also shows the total number of hours available each week for each manufacturing stage. Assembling 3 12 6 120 Polishing 1 5 5 60 Painting 2 1 1 30

Red Toys Blue Toys Green Toys Total hours available

The factory makes a profit of RM10, RM30 and RM25 from each red toy, each blue toy and each green toy respectively. Formulate a linear programming problem to maximise total profit earned within the constrains. [5 marks] Write the initial tableau to represent the problem above. [3 marks] If the final tableau is as follows, state maximum profit earned and the number of toys produced. [2 marks] P P y z x 1 0 0 0 x 0 0 0 1 y 0 1 0 0 z 0 0 1 0 s1 s2 s3 Solution 375 5 5 10

Section B (15 marks) Answer any one question in this section

7. Desmat is a company that manufactures calculators for school use. The company manufactures two type of calculators, Basic and Advance. The production of the Basic requires a capital of RM 60 and 2 hours of labour. The production of the Advance requires capital expenditure of RM 40 and 5 hours of labour. The company has RM 2400 capital and 100 hours of labour available for the production of the calculators per week. The Basic calculator contributes a profit of RM35 while the Advance calculator contributes RM40. If x and y represent the number of Basic and Advance calculators respectively, formulate the problem using linear programming model. Shade the feasible region in the x y plane on a graph paper. [10 marks] (a) How many of each type of calculators should the company produce to maximise profit? [3 marks] (b) What is the maximum profit? [2 marks]
