WHAT IS E-CAT ENABLE ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------E-CAT Enable is an Electronic Catalog program which will allow you, as a Carrier salesperson, to access features in E-CAT selection programs that are not generally available to external customers. For example, ACAPS has extended offerings in tube diameters and fin spacings available only to sales offices, and most especially pricing is shown only to sales offic e users. The following sections explain how to install and run E-CAT Enable, why we need such a program in the first place, how to handle your "good" customers, and finally, some important technical tips. Please take a few minutes to read through them carefully. There is one very important aspect of the E-CAT Enable program that you need to be aware of - it is very sensitive to your computer's system date. Please be sure that your computer's date is correct any time you run E-CAT Enable, or any other of the E-CAT selection programs. (The Control Panel will allow you to check and reset your computer's system date, if necessary.) HOW DO I USE IT? -------------------------------------------------------------------------In the briefest of terms, you use E-CAT Enable by first installing it, and then running it ONE time. When you run it, you will have to enter the current "E-CAT Enable Password". After that, any E-CAT program that has "Sales Office Only" features will automatically detect the presence of your E-CAT Enable program, and "enable" (turn on) those features. You WON'T have to re-enter the password each time you run an E-CAT selection program. So, what is this "E-CAT Enable Password" ? It's a simple password that we (Software Systems) will distribute to all the Carrier direct, branch, and distributor sales offices. There's just one password - if you forget it, you can ask your friend in the next office what it is - it's the same for ALL offices. There is a catch, however. The password expires on a 6 month rotating schedule - in other words, you will need to run E-CAT Enable in 6 months to enter the new E-CAT Enable Password. The E-CAT Enable Password will be distributed to sales offices with each Software System mailing via two separate routes. An update sheet will be included with the mailing which lists the new password, as well as a list of current E-CAT programs that have "Sales Office Only" features. This same information will also be distributed via Email to the Software Coordinator in each of the sales offices. Once you've installed the E-CAT Enable program (in Electronic Catalog) and gotten hold of the current E-CAT Enable password, it's a simple procedure to "enable" the "Sales Office Only" features. Select E-CAT Enable from __________________________________________________________________________

the E-CAT Program Menu. If this is the first time you've run E-CAT Enable, you will be prompted to enter the current E-CAT Enable password. Once you've entered the password, you will then be shown a status screen which tells you the date the current password will expire. You'll also have the opportunity to view the users manual (this document) before returning to the E-CAT Program Menu. After you've entered the E-CAT Enable password, you'll now be able access the "Sales Office Only" features in any E-CAT selection programs that have them. These features will be automatically enabled - you do not need to re-enter the password. When you run one of these programs, you will be notified at startup time that your E-CAT Enable password has been verified, and that the program will run in "Sales Office" mode. Meanwhile, your customers can run the same E-CAT selection program and never be aware that the "Sales Office Only" features exist - they are disabled when the selection program fails to find the E-CAT Enable program. After you run E-CAT Enable for the first time, you need not run it again until you receive a new E-CAT Enable password. It won't cause any problems if you do - you will just be shown the expiration date screen. The timing of the release of the E-CAT Enable passwords will be arranged so that you should receive the password about 30 days prior to the current password's expiration date. Once the current date is within 30 days of the current password's expiration date, you'll be able to run E-CAT Enable and have an option which allows you to enter the next password. This is a task you should perform as soon as you receive a new E-CAT Enable password.

WHY DO WE HAVE IT ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------You might very well ask the question - "Why do we need a password program, anyway ?" E-CAT programs have worked fine until now - is this just another one of those inane pieces of overhead that always seem to be emanating from Syracuse ? We sincerely hope not! A lot of thought has gone into the design of E-CAT Enable to make it as painless as possible for the sales force. If you'll take a moment to read the next couple of paragraphs, we'll try to explain why it is that YOU need (and want!) an E-CAT password program. One of the first points that you need to understand is that there IS a need to distribute program features meant only to be used by sales offices, and also a need to somehow protect those programs so that they don't easily fall into your counterpart's (the Trane or York salesman's) hands. (You don't want to give them any more advantages than necessary, right ?) So, for example, in ACAPS, the 39NX has 5/8" tubes that we don't ever want to see specified by an engineer - they're only there as a __________________________________________________________________________ E-CAT Enable pg 3

defense against a somebody else's spec. To take the example even further - we've started releasing programs containing pricing information - you sure wouldn't want that to get into the hands of your competitors or customers, right ? Once you accept the need for protecting some of these "Sales Office Only" features, the task that falls on Software Systems is to accomplish this in a manner which is simple and easy for the salesperson - in both implementation of the protection itself, and maintenance of the E-CAT selection programs with "Sales Office Only" features. With E-CAT Enable, we believe that we have accomplished these goals while still providing adequate protection. On the protection side - all the password control has been centralized in one place, and you only have to run it once every 6 months. For the E-CAT selection programs themselves, this scheme will allow us to maintain only one version of any given E-CAT program, rather than separate versions for sales offices and external customers. This is actually more work for Software Systems, but it should make your life as a salesperson much easier - your customers will have the same version of the selection programs as you do. You can also hand out copies of your versions of E-CAT programs without worrying about "Sales Office Only" features - your customers won't see them. In fact, we expect to use E-CAT Enable to cut down on the number of Advance Release versions of E-CAT selection programs. We'll still advance release new features (such as the Acoustics Modules), but we'll do it by detecting the presence of E-CAT Enable rather than having separate version numbers. Of course, there will still be times when it is virtually impossible to have an Advance Release and customer release in the same program - so there will still be the occasional Advance Release. In summary, Software System views E-CAT Enable as a necessary evil. We're sorry to have to drop it on you, and have done as much as possible to make it as painless for you as we could. On the positive side, we think it will help simplify your job of keeping track of E-CAT program versions, and will also open the door for us to build new features into the E-CAT selection programs to help you do your job more productively. Bon Voyage! WHAT ABOUT MY CUSTOMERS ? -------------------------------------------------------------------------OK, you've got a "good" customer that you can trust with the knowledge that 5/8" tubes are available for the 39NX, or won't mind an occasional tip on how to sell better against Trane. What can you do about letting him select the way you do ? This version of Enable has just the answer we promised when we first released Enable - a second level of password meant just for these customers. This "Preferred Customer" password will unlock all the same features as the Sales Office password EXCEPT PRICING. So now you can continue to share extended features with customers without the worry of him (or a competitor, for that matter) getting access to your pricing. __________________________________________________________________________

Simply give your customer a copy of the Enable program and tell him the current password. The Preferred Customer password will be communicated at the same time and through the same medium as the Sales Office password. In other words, YOU will receive it from us, and YOU will decide which of your customers to give it to. This leads to one of the disadvantages of the E-CAT Enable approach - it treats all E-CAT selection programs the same. In other words, you cannot give your customer access to the "Sales Office Only" features in the Rooftop program while denying him access to the same features in the Air Terminal program. Hopefully, this disadvantage is more than made up for by the simplicity of the E-CAT Enable approach. A FEW TECHNICAL TIPS -------------------------------------------------------------------------As mentioned before, E-CAT Enable is about as simple a program as there is. However, as part of its protection scheme - it is VERY, VERY sensitive to your computer's internal (system) date. Prior to installing E-CAT Enable, check your computer's system date. Use the Control Panel "Date and Time" application or just look at the taskbar. If your system's date is incorrect, enter the correct date. Once you've set the date correctly, proceed to install and run E-CAT Enable just like any other E-CAT program. It is also important to make sure your computer's system date is set correctly whenever you subsequently run other E-CAT selection programs. If you have an IBM AT or similar computer, the system date is maintained in the computer's battery powered memory. If it is not set properly, you will need to use the Control Panel to reset the date properly. Occasionally, E-CAT Enable will detect some sort of anomaly in your computer's system dates. Unfortunately, for protection purposes, the error messages cannot be too explicit. (If they were, we'd only be making it easier for someone to crack the system!) If this occurs, the easiest thing to do is to remove the E-CAT Enable program, re-install it, and then run it to re-enter the password. If this fails to solve the problem please contact Software Systems with the exact error message, and we'll get you up and running as soon as possible.
