NO LONGER JUST ABOUT CALL CENTERS!
PHILIPPINES
The Philippines is emerging as a top destination of choice best suited to serving the healthcare
industry needs of the US market. A cultural affnity for the US market. A Philippine culture for care
and hospitality that is recognized as world class. A long history of producing top quality medical
professionals that are regularly deployed to the rest of the world, including the US. A large pool
of highly trained medical professionals familiar with US medical practices and standards. And an
established track record of being a competitive location for offshore and outsourced operations.
The Philippines as a result is now an emerging global hub for healthcare information management.
Which is one big reason why the Philippines is no longer just about call centers!
2 PhiliPPines: YOUR GLOBAL PARTNER IN HEALTHCARE BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT
Longevity requires a solid foundation based on ethical standards centered on lntegrity,
Quality and Respect. These are standards that the Philippine workforce is world renowned
for and standards that HlMOAP strives to continue developing via its interactions with
our membership, government supporters and the local academe.
The combination of recent U.S. legislative changes regarding healthcare and
technological advances are rapidly changing not only the way healthcare providers and
payers distribute, analyze and report their services, it will also have a signifcant impact
on the way that individuals perceive, access and participate in their own healthcare
management.
At an individual level, these changes increase the demand for clinically educated/trained
personnel to help guide people through the complicated decisions that need to be made
to ensure that they and their loved ones select the optimal coverage available to them
and their unique circumstances.
At a payer/provider level, the challenges of an over taxed/diminishing U.S. healthcare
workforce (both Doctor and Nurse population studies report signifcant upcoming
shortage concernsj and the increase in membership via the PPACA requirements
combined with the increase in services indicative of an aging population create the
quandary of how to do more with less.
The Philippines has a history of supplying nurses to the U.S. healthcare industry for
many decades as well as providing high quality coding, transcription and back offce
administrative tasks at affordable pricing levels.
Activities such as that of AHlMA offer opportunities to communicate what the Philippine
HlM services industry can offer to beneft the US healthcare market and industry. And for
the last 10 years HlMOAP has represented the Philippines as the Off-shore destination
for quality HlM related services.
l ask you to please take the time to meet with the member companies that are present
at this year's AHlMA convention and explore the means by which we can help you to
take advantage of the emerging opportunities. We look forward to having you join us in
HlMOAP's program of activities for the US market including that for AHlMA.
Sincerely,
JEFF WILLIAMS

GROWTH OF IT-BPO INDUSTRY MEANS ECONOMIC
GROWTH OF THE ENTIRE PHILIPPINES
Within the next three years, the lT-BPM industry is seen
to exponentially grow, with demand forecast to increase
to USD 122 billion3. By this time, non-voice BPM services
are expected to outgrow voice BPM services and increase
in significance, with the former projected at 58% and the
latter at 42%, showing a great window of opportunity for
the offshore non-voice BPM industry
3
. According to Everest
Group and Outsource2Philippines, vertical and more specific
non-voice services are likely to grow in significance by 2016

offces, clinics, insurance companies, and organizations that
provide health-related services, is currently seeing the most rapid
growth in the Philippine lnformation Technology and Business
Process Management (lT-BPMj scene.
As one of the non-voice, complex BPM services offered by the
Philippines, demand for HlM is seen to
be one of the key drivers of growth for the
lT-BPM industry. A MarketsandMarkets
report cited in the 2012-2016 Philippine
lnformation Technology and Business
Process Management (lT-BPMj
Road Map states that the worldwide
healthcare BPM market is seeing growth
at a compounded annual rate of 21.4
percent

.
Everest, in their 2013 study "Healthcare
BPO is a 'Hidden Jewel' for the
Philippines Global Services Industry

the increasing need for technological

According to the 2012-2016 Philippine lT-BPM Road Map, the
Philippine HlM industry saw an increase in compound annual

5
.
The Philippine HlM services include medical transcription,
medical coding, medical billing, electronic medical records
and electronic health records, clinical
informatics, medical claims recovery,

and quality assurance. The country
has grown to become a leading global
participant in the outsource industry,
consistently included in offshore location

6
.
The Philippines remains one of the top
destinations of choice over the world
for HlM because of the human resource
advantages the country presents to
clients and investors. The Philippines
provides a large talent pool of healthcare
professionals that are familiar with
the United States medical system
and with US business processes and
practices. The Philippine culture for
care and hospitality is ideally suited
for the nurturing and development of
healthcare professionals that are suited

a long history of producing world-class
healthcare professionals that are regularly deployed to the rest
