Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful
fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many
people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival
of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The
following are a handful of actvities that are tailor-made
for fall.
* Apple picking: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous
with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards
encourage customers to come by and pick their own
apples in the fall. Once your family and you have
scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a
cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make
some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious
apple pie.
* Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many
farms offer relaxing hayrides throughout fall. Younger
children who may tire if asked to patrol an apple orchard
for apples might find a hayride is more their speed.
Some farms may even allow customers to walk the
grounds and visit the animals on the premises.
* Corn maze: Visiting a corn maze is another activity
that many people instantly associate with fall. Some
farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once
the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for
adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often
be trusted to find their way through corn mazes,
younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.
* Pumpkin picking: Much like apple picking is best in
fall, so is pumpkin picking. Rather than buying your
Halloween pumpkin from the grocery store, where your
options may be limited, go straight to the source and
pick your future jack-o-lantern from a nearby pumpkin
patch, which will provide a much wider selection. Let
your youngsters pick their own pumpkins and then
spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And
dont forget to save those seeds, which can be roasted
over an open flame to make a delicious snack.

Proactive
ways to
reduce your
risk of
developing
cancer
Receiving a cancer diagnosis
can be a devastating moment
in a persons life. While many
cancers are treatable, a cancer
diagnosis is still a life-changing
moment that leaves many
people asking themselves if
there was something they
could have done to prevent
getting cancer.
Its easy to take a reactionary
approach to a cancer diagnosis,
but many people might not
know they can take a proactive
approach to reduce their risk
of developing cancer in the
first place. Though the
following tips cant guarantee
you will never receive a cancer
diagnosis, they can help you
reduce that risk considerably.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Numerous studies have
indicated that being
overweight or obese can
increase your risk of
developing certain cancers.
Uterine, breast, prostate and
colorectal cancers have all been
linked to being overweight or
obese. Speak to your physician
about a plan to help you lose
weight and then maintain that
weight. Your doctor should be
able to provide insight on
nutrition and how you should
approach exercise if its been
awhile since exercise was a part
of your daily routine.
Avoid tobacco or quit
smoking. Cigarette smoking is
responsible for a majority of
cases of lung cancer, which is
the leading cause of cancer
death in the United States.
Smoking causes about 90
percent of lung cancer deaths
in men and roughly 80 percent
of lung cancer deaths in
women, according to the
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Men who
smoke are nearly 23 times
more likely to develop lung
cancer than men who dont,
while women who smoke are
13 times more likely to
develop lung cancer than
women who avoid smoking
tobacco. Smoking also
increases a persons risk of
developing other cancers,
including cancer of the larynx,
mouth and throat, kidney,
esophagus, bladder, and
pancreas. Smokers who quit
smoking will see their cancer
risk reduce dramatically the
longer they go without
smoking.
Steer clear of secondhand
smoke. Even if you dont
smoke you might be putting
yourself at risk if you allow
others around you to smoke in
your presence. According to
the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services,
exposure to secondhand smoke
can increase a persons risk of
developing lung cancer by as
much as 30 percent. Thats
because the concentration of
many toxic and cancer-causing
chemicals is higher in
secondhand smoke than the
smoke inhaled by smokers.
Reduce alcohol
consumption. A 2007 study
from the World Health
Organization revealed that
daily consumption of 50
grams of alcohol, or about 1.8
ounces, doubles or triples a
persons risk of developing
mouth, voice box or throat
cancers. In addition, many
studies have linked alcohol
consumption to a heightened
risk of primary liver cancer
and an increased risk of breast
cancer. Also, a variety of
studies have linked alcohol
consumption to an increased
risk of colorectal cancer.
Take precautionary measures
when spending time in the
sun. Exposure to the suns
ultraviolet rays has been linked
to skin cancer, which is the
most common form of cancer
in the United States. When
spending time in the sun,
always apply adequate
sunscreen with a minimum
sun protection factor, or SPF,
of 15. In addition, wear
appropriate clothing,
including sunglasses, and seek
out shaded areas when
spending a significant amount
of time in the sun.
Men and women do not have
to wait until a cancer diagnosis
to start living healthier.
Adopting a proactive approach
can greatly reduce your risk of
developing cancer and a
variety of other health issues as
well.
Did You Know?
Non-small cell lung cancer, or
NSCLC , is the most common type of
lung cancer, with about 85 to 90
percent of lung cancers falling into
this category. There are three main
subtypes of NSCLC: squamous cell
(epidermoid) carcinoma,
adenocarcinoma and large cell
(undifferentiated) carcinoma. Roughly
25 to 30 percent of all lung cancers are
squamous cell carcinomas, which start
in the flat cells known as squamous
cells that line the inside of the airways
in the lung. Usually found in the
middle of the lungs, these squamous
cells are typically linked to a history of
smoking. Adenocarcinomas account for
approximately 40 percent of lung
cancer diagnoses, and these start in the
early versions of the cells that are
normally responsible for secreting
mucus. Though adenocarcinoma is the
most common form of lung cancer
found in nonsmokers, it mainly occurs
in current or former smokers.
Adenocarcinoma if most often found in
the outer parts of the lung and is likely
to be discovered before it spreads beyond
the lung. Thats because adenocarcinoma
grows more slowly than other forms of
lung cancer, which is why the prognosis
for those with adenocarcinoma is often
better than it is for those with other
types of lung cancer. Large cell
carcinoma, which accounts for about 10
to 15 percent of lung cancers, can be
found in any part of the lung, and it
tends to grow and spread quickly.

Few, if any, families can say
they have never had an
experience with cancer.
Cancer is a potentially deadly
disease with no cure. While
cancer can be treated
effectively, there is no way for
men and women to eliminate
their risk of developing cancer.
Though cancer may strike
even the healthiest of persons,
there are ways men, women
and even children can reduce
their risk. One such way is to
consume certain foods that
researchers feel can reduce
cancer risk. Though precisely
how these foods fight cancer
remains a mystery, cancer
researchers feel they can
effectively lower an
individuals cancer risk when
combined to form a healthy
diet.
Beans: Beans boast
numerous healthy attributes,
and their potential to reduce
cancer risk is one such
attribute. Beans contain many
phytochemicals that
researchers feel protect the
cells from the type of damage
that can ultimately make a
person susceptible to cancer.
Beans also have been shown to
decelerate tumor growth and
prevent tumors from releasing
potentially harmful substances
that can damage nearby cells.
Colorful fruits and
vegetables: It may seem odd
that a foods color can have an
impact on cancer risk, but
colorful fruits and vegetables
contain more cancer-fighting
nutrients than fruits and
vegetables that arent as flashy.
Consuming such fruits and
vegetables also helps men and
women maintain a healthy
body weight, an important
benefit when considering
overweight and obesity
increases a persons risk for
multiple cancers.
Foods with folate: Folate is a
B vitamin that can reduce a
persons risk of developing
several cancers, including
those of the colon, rectum and
breast. Those who are fond of
a healthy breakfast to begin
their day may already be
getting healthy doses of folate,
which can be found in eggs,
fortified breakfast cereals,
orange juice, and strawberries,
among other foods. If toast is
your breakfast of choice, opt
for whole wheat toast, as
whole wheat products are a
good source of folate.
Grapes: Studies have shown
that resveratrol, a key
ingredient in grapes, may
prevent the type of damage
that triggers the production of
cancerous cells. Though
scientists are not yet
comfortable saying grapes, or
beverages like grape juice and
wine, can reduce cancer risk,
they believe that the
antioxidant and anti-
inflammatory properties of
grapes make them a healthy
option.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes are
widely beloved, and perhaps
that love affair stems from the
tomatos role in fighting
cancer. Though the reasons
are unknown, tomatoes have
been linked to lowering mens
risk for prostate cancer. One
such study, a 1995 study from
researchers at the Harvard
Medical School, found that
men who ate 10 or more
servings of tomatoes per week
reduced their risk of
developing aggressive prostate
tumors by nearly 50 percent.
Later research from the author
of the 1995 study found that
processed tomatoes, such as
those found in tomato paste
and tomato sauce, were even
more effective at reducing
cancer risk than fresh
tomatoes. Tomatoes have also
been linked to lowering a
persons risk for lung and
stomach cancers.
Water: Water may not
qualify as a food, but it may
protect people from bladder
cancer. Potential cancer-
causing agents in the bladder
are diluted when drinking
water. In addition, the more
water you drink the more
frequently youre likely to
urinate, which means cancer-
causing agents have less time
to come into contact with the
lining of your bladder.
Many foods can help
individuals in the fight against
cancer. Though one food
alone may not be potent
enough to do the job, when
several cancer-fighting foods
are included in a persons diet,
the effects may be significant.
Fruits and veggies can help fight cancer
Cancer affects the lives millions of people across the globe.
When detected early, cancer becomes a significantly less
formidable foe, as survival rates for cancer patients whose
cancer was detected early are much higher than those whose
initial diagnosis came after the disease had progressed into its
later stages. But early detection isnt the only way to beat
cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, a healthy
diet that includes at least 212 cups of fruits and vegetables each
day can help men, women and children lower their cancer risk.
Fruits and vegetables that have the most color, such as those that are dark green, red, yellow,
and orange, tend to have the most nutrients. Fruits and vegetables are typically low in calories
as well, which helps people maintain healthy weights. Thats a significant benefit, as the ACS
Cancer Prevention Study II showed significant increases in cancer occurrence in people who
are the most overweight. The link between cancer and obesity is especially strong with specific
cancers, including breast cancer after menopause and cancers of the colon, rectum, pancreas,
kidneys, esophagus, and endometrium. Whats more, studies have shown that obese men and
women have a harder time battling cancer upon diagnosis. So while a diet rich in fruits and
vegetables can help lower cancer risk, such a diet may even make it easier to battle cancer if
diagnosed.

Millions of people across the globe receive a cancer
diagnosis each year. While that diagnosis can initially
be devastating, its important to note that many cancer
patients survive the disease and go on to live
productive lives.
Advocacy is a significant part of many cancer survivors
lives. Cancer survivors often become strong supporters
of cancer research so one day others wont have to
endure the disease. Whether theyre supporting cancer
charities that fund cancer research, spreading the word
about cancer prevention in their communities or
participating in events aimed at raising awareness
about cancer, cancer survivors are a source of
inspiration to their friends, family members and
neighbors.
But as much as cancer survivors tend to do for others,
they should also take steps to ensure their own health.
Diet is a great way to do just that. A healthy meal can
provide the nourishment cancer survivors need as they
get back in the swing of things and continue their lives
going forward. And such meals need not be void of
flavor, as the following recipe for Asian Japonica Rice
Salad With Edamame from Rebecca Katz One Bite
At a Time: Nourishing Recipes for Cancer Survivors
and Their Friends (Celestial Arts) can attest.
Nutritious food
a friend to
cancer survivors
Asian Japonica Rice Salad With Edamame
Serves 8
2 teaspoons sea salt
2 cups black Japonica rice, rinsed and drained
1 cup shelled edamame beans
1 cup peeled and thinly sliced celery, sliced diagonally
1/2 cup peeled and shredded carrots
Red bell pepper, diced
1/2 cup thinly sliced scallions, green and white parts,
sliced diagonally
Dressing
2 tablespoons brown rice vinegar
3 tablespoons tamari
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/8 teaspoon cayenne
1/4 cup sesame oil
1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon maple syrup
1 cup toasted cashews (see box)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon lightly toasted sesame seeds
(see box)
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
In a medium pot, bring 4 cups of water and 1
teaspoon salt to a boil over high heat. Add the
rice and return to a boil. Cover, decrease the
heat and simmer until tender, 40 to 45
minutes. Pour the rice onto a sheet pan and
fluff with a fork to separate the grains and
cool.
In another medium pot, bring 4 cups of water
to a boil over high heat. Add 1 teaspoon salt
and blanch the edamame until just tender,
about 1 minute. Transfer to a colander, rinse
with cold water, and set aside.
In a bowl, combine the rice, celery, carrot, red
pepper, and scallions. Prepare the dressing by
whisking the vinegar, tamari, ginger, garlic,
cayenne, sesame oil, toasted sesame oil, lime
juice, salt, and maple syrup together. Toss the
rice mixture with the dressing. Stir in the
beans, cashews (reserve a few for garnish),
cilantro, and basil. Top with the sesame seeds
and a squeeze of lime juice. Serve in a salad
bowl, garnished with cashews.
Roasting and Toasting (nuts and seeds)
This process releases the nuts natural oils and increases their flavor. Roast nuts at 325 F on a sheet pan. The roasting time depends on the type and
quantity of nuts. Roast almonds for 10 to 15 minutes, pistachios for 8 to 10 minutes, pecans for 7 t o 8 minutes, and pine nuts for only 2 to 4
minutes. Roast a lot at one time, some to eat and some to freeze. To toast, place seeds in a small f rying pan over medium heat. Dont walk away from
the stove or the seeds will be toast not toasted. Shake the pan over the heat until the seeds beco me fragrant, about 3 minutes.

Cancer terms to know
A cancer diagnosis can be difficult to understand. When diagnosed with cancer, men and
women are often told many things about their disease, and the terminology used can be
confusing. The following are some of the terms those diagnosed with cancer are likely to
hear in discussions with their physicians.
Ablation
Treatment that removes or destroys all or
part of a cancer. Ablation may also be
performed to remove or stop the function
of an organ.
Adenoma
A benign growth starting in the glandular
tissue.
Advanced cancer
This describes stages of cancer in which
the cancer has spread from where it
started to other parts of the body. Cancer
that has spread only to nearby parts of the
body is known as locally advanced cancer,
while cancer that has spread to distant
parts of the body is known as metastatic
cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma
The most common form of skin cancer,
basal cell carcinoma begins in the outer
layer of the skin known as the epidermis.
Basal cell carcinoma typically develops on
sun-exposed areas, such as the head and
neck.
Benign
Non-malignant and not life-threatening.
A benign tumor is not cancer and will not
spread to other areas of the body.
Biopsy
The removal of a tissue sample to
determine if cancer cells are present.
Cancer
A group of diseases that cause cells in the
body to change and grow out of control.
Carcinogen
Any substance that causes cancer or
promotes its growth.
Carcinoma
A cancer that begins in the lining layer of
organs. The American Cancer Society
notes that 80 percent of all cancers are
carcinomas.
Chemotherapy
A cancer treatment option that employs
drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is
often used to treat cancer that has spread
or come back or when there is a strong
chance the cancer will come back.
Five-year survival rate
The percentage of people with a given
cancer who are alive five years or longer
after diagnosis.
Grade
The grade of a cancer indicates how
abnormal its cells look under a
microscope. Different grading systems
exist for different types of cancers.
Immunosuppression
A state in which the immune system is
weak and unable to respond the way it
should. Immunosuppression may be
caused by some cancers or cancer
treatments.
In situ
In place, localized and confined to one
area. This is a very early stage of cancer.
Invasive cancer
Cancer that has spread beyond the layer of
cells where it initially began and has grown
into nearby tissues.
Lesion
An area of abnormal body tissue. This
term may be used to describe a lump, mass
or tumor.
Lipoma
A non-cancerous tumor made of a fatty
tissue.
Localized cancer
Cancer that is confined to the organ where
it started.
Malignant
Cancerous. Tumors that are malignant are
likely to cause death if they are untreated.
Metastasize
The spread of cancer cells to one or more
sites elsewhere in the body.
Oncologist
A doctor with special training in the
diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Recurrence
The return of cancer after treatment.
Remission
Complete or partial disappearance of the
signs and symptoms of cancer in response
to treatment.
Sarcoma
Cancer that starts in connective tissue,
such as cartilage, fat, muscle, or bone.
Stage
The extent of cancer, which is usually
assigned a number from I to IV.
Cancer recurrence
a difficult message to receive
A cancer diagnosis is never welcome news, especially when it comes unexpectedly. Cancer
patients may undergo treatment for weeks or months, all the while hoping that treatment
will ultimately prove effective. But cancer can return even when it is successfully treated,
and the prospect of that return understandably induces concern.
The risk of recurrence is different for each person and typically depends on a host of factors.
The type of cancer, how much time has passed since treatment, the type of treatment
received, and how well a person has been taking care of himself or herself since treatment
ended can all influence a persons risk of recurrence. Eating right, exercising and seeing the
oncologist for follow-up visits are key to good health. But the American Cancer Society
notes that nothing can be done to guarantee your cancer wont recur.
Cancer recurrence is defined as the return of cancer after treatment. The same type of
cancer may return in the same area of the body, such as breast cancer returning in the same
breast. In some instances, the cancer may return elsewhere in the body. But it is still referred
to as a breast cancer recurrence, even if the next incidence is elsewhere. The length of time
between the first bout of cancer and the next can vary. When cancer gets worse, this is called
a progression. Sometimes it can be difficult to discern whether a recurrence is truly a
recurrence or a progression. When only a short amount of time has lapsed since the initial
diagnosis, then chances are the cancer is a progression.
After cancer goes into remission, a doctor usually sets up a schedule of follow-up
appointments to check for cancer recurrence. A local recurrence, or one in the same spot as
before, may be easy to treat. Many advancements have been made regarding the treatment
of cancer. However, for many cancers, a recurrence at a distant site can mean the chance for
successful treatment is not very likely.
Learning of a recurrence can be devastating, especially after working so hard and suffering
through so much to push cancer into remission. Focusing on the future and not growing
discouraged about beginning the battle anew are keys to fighting cancer again. But this time
you will know what to expect and can plan accordingly.
Receiving news of a cancer recurrence can elicit anger, fear and fatigue. But a recurrence of
cancer can be treated successfully, and maintaining a positive outlook can make it easier to
fight cancer once again.

Sun exposure myths can be harmful
Myth: I need to soak up the sun to get enough vitamin D. Its true that the sun
helps the body produce vitamin D, but you do not need to spend hours in the sun to
fulfill your bodys need for vitamin D. Five to 10 minutes of sun exposure is
adequate, and you can include vitamin D in your diet by consuming foods and
beverages such as oily fish, fortified milk and orange juice. Dairy products, such as
yogurt and cheese, also contain the vitamin D your body needs.
Myth: I have dark skin, so I dont need to wear sunscreen. The idea that more
melanin the skin contains the more protected it will be from sun exposure is not
necessarily a myth. Dark-skinned people typically do not burn as quickly as those
with lighter skin. But many dermatologists agree that darker skin is not adequate
protection against cancer and even premature wrinkling. According to Mona
Gohara, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of
Medicine, a person with medium-brown skin has a natural SPF of around 13.
However, it is advisable to use SPF 30 for basic sun protection.
Myth: Im wearing enough sunscreen. Many people underestimate how much
sunscreen is necessary to protect the skin. It is recommended to use at least 1 ounce
of sunscreen on exposed areas of the skin for maximum protection. Read the label of
the product. You may need to apply the sunscreen every two hours or more
depending on your activity level and how much sunscreen is lost to sweating or
swimming. You even need sunscreen on cloudy days or if you sit by a window while
you work. Also, wait 30 minutes between application and heading out into the sun.
Chemical sunscreens take that long to work.
Myth: The skin on the legs and arms is not as delicate as the face. Its safe to get a
To many people, sunshine equates to happiness, including fun times
outdoors and walks on the beach. Despite warnings about excessive
exposure to the sun, many people cannot get enough of the suns
potentially harmful rays.
While taking in the sun is beneficial, it poses many dangers as well.
Separating fact from fiction is essential for sun worshippers who plan
to spend ample time outdoors.
The Canadian Cancer Society says that every three minutes another
Canadian receives a cancer diagnosis. Skin cancer is the most
common of all cancers, accounting for nearly half of all cancers in
the United States. More than 3.5 million cases of basal and
squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each
year. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma, the
most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 76,600
cases of skin cancer in 2013.
Knowing the facts about sun exposure is essential to reduce your risk
of developing skin cancer. Unfortunately, certain widely spread
myths can make it difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction.
little tan in these areas. Skin is skin, and no one area is less prone to sun damage and
cancer risk than another. In fact, dermatologists say melanoma is most likely to form
on the head and trunk of men and arms and legs of women. African-Americans are at a
higher risk for lentiginous melanoma, which develops on the palms and the soles of
feet.
Myth: Sunscreens cause cancer. In 2001, a small study on mice suggested
oxybenzone, an ingredient that is commonly used in sunscreens, produced free radicals
that may contribute to melanoma. However, the FDA has approved the use of
oxybenzone and there is no definitive link between human use of the ingredient and
melanoma. If you are worried about chemicals, select a mineral-based sunscreen
instead.
Despite whats known about sun exposure and skin cancer, many myths about
exposure to the sun still prevail. Regardless of what you hear, its best to wear sunscreen
every day and cover up to protect your skin.

How to protect
yourself from
UV rays
Ultraviolet, or UV, radiation is a
significant risk factor for skin cancer.
People can be exposed to UV rays in
various ways, but the primary source of
that exposure is sunlight. Overexposure to
UV rays can prove harmful to the DNA
in skin cells, putting people at a greater
risk for skin cancer.
The amount of UV exposure a person
gets depends on a host of factors,
including the strength of the rays, which
come in various wavelengths. UVA rays
age the bodys cells and can damage their
DNA. These are the rays most associated
with long-term skin damage, such as
wrinkles. UVB rays also can damage
DNA, and these are the primary cause for
sunburn. In addition, UVB rays are
believed to be responsible for most skin
cancers. UVC rays cannot get through
our atmosphere, and they are not typically
linked to skin cancer.
When damage from UV rays affects the
DNA of genes that control skin cell growth, skin cancers can begin to form. Though
overexposure to UV rays can have such a devastating impact, it is rather easy to protect
yourself from UV rays. Limiting exposure to sunlight is the best way to protect yourself
from UV rays, but staying indoors and never going out in the sun is not the answer. In fact,
staying indoors is likely to lead to a more sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to a host of
ailments as potentially grave as skin cancer. But it helps to keep UV rays in mind when
going out in the sun, and taking the following protective measures can ensure your moments
in the sun are as safe as they are fun.
Avoid direct sunlight. Avoiding direct sunlight, especially between the hours of 10 a.m.
and 4 p.m., when UV rays are at their strongest, can protect you from the suns harmful
rays. During such times, seek shade instead of spending time directly in the sun. If on a
picnic, set your party up beneath a tree, moving as the day progresses and the trees shadows
shift so you are constantly protected by the shade. When visiting a beach, be sure to bring
along an umbrella and stay beneath it as much as possible.
Cover up. Clothing is your friend when spending time in the sun, but some types of
clothing are more effective than others. Clothing that you can see light through will be less
protective than clothing that blocks light.
Slather on sunscreen. Sunscreen is mistakenly assumed to be the most effective protective
agent against UV rays. Though sunscreen is effective, you are still more protected from the
sun when avoiding direct sunlight and wearing protective and adequate clothing than you
will be if you apply sunscreen and then sit in the sun for hours on end. Sunscreen does not
provide complete protection from all UV rays, so simply applying sunscreen wont be
enough. Sunscreens come in many varieties and boast varying degrees of protection from the
sun and its UV rays.

Childhood cancers vary
depending on type
A cancer diagnosis is never welcome news. But such news is
even more difficult when delivered to a child. Adding to
that heartbreak is the fact that childhood cancers are often
more aggressive than adult cancers.
Cancers of the lung, breast and colon, while relatively
common among adults, are rarely diagnosed in children or
adolescents. Childhood cancers are rare, so while the
average man or woman might be familiar with lung or
colon cancer, that familiarity does not typically extend to
childhood cancers. The following is a brief rundown of
some childhood cancers. For more extensive information
about the various types of childhood cancers, visit the
American Childhood Cancer Organization at
www.acco.org.
Leukemias
Leukemias occur when abnormal white blood cells, known
as leukemia cells, are produced in the bone marrow. These
cells are cancerous and, unlike normal white blood cells,
they are unable to function as immune cells. As the
abnormal cells continue to populate the bone marrow, they
begin to push out normal white and red blood cells and
platelets. This compromises the bodys ability to prevent
infection and carry oxygen, which causes blood clots. So a
child with leukemia is susceptible to infection and bruising
and will commonly appear very pale. The most common
leukemias in children are acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or
ALL, and acute myeloid leukemia, or AML.
Lymphomas
Childhood lymphomas are cancers that develop in the
lymph system, where a fluid called lymph is carried.
Lymph contains white blood cells that help fight
infections. When a malignancy develops in the lymph
system, which connects lymph nodes in the neck, armpit
and groin with the spleen, thymus and parts of the tonsils,
it can spread throughout the rest of the system before it is
even detected. Lymphomas are classified as Hodgkins or
non-Hodgkins, which is the more common lymphoma in
children. Lymphomas are often characterized by swollen
lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin, and additional
symptoms may include, but are not limited to, swelling of
the face, abdominal pain, unexplained fever, and difficulty
breathing.
Brain cancers
Brain cancers are the
second most
common type of
cancers in children.
Many different types
of brain tumors can
develop in children,
which can make it
difficult for those
unfamiliar with
pediatric brain
tumors to
understand them.
The process of
classifying these
tumors is evolving,
but many brain
tumors are currently
named for the type
of cell where the
tumor originated
and the location of
the tumor itself.
That location can affect treatment, as the tumor may be
inaccessible or located in such a place that can jeopardize a
developing brain upon surgical removal of the tumor.
Location of the tumor may also dictate symptoms, as where a
tumor is located may be reflected in behavior exhibited by the
child. Seizures not related to fever, persistent vomiting
without a known cause, progressive weakness or clumsiness,
walking and balance problems, vision problems, and
headaches that wake a child up at night or appear early in the
morning are just a few of the potential indicators of brain
tumors. The ACCO notes that children are unlikely to report
symptoms of brain tumors, so adults must be especially
observant and aware of the signs of pediatric brain tumors.
A childhood cancer diagnosis is never easy to receive. But
adults who understand childhood cancers may be in a better
position to recognize and help youngsters battling the disease.

Recognizing warning signs
for childhood cancers
Leukemia
Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer, accounting for approximately 35 percent of
all childhood cancers. A cancer of the bone marrow, leukemia occurs when abnormal white
blood cells divide out of control, eventually crowding out normal cells in the bloodstream.
Because these abnormal cells havent matured, they arent able to function fully and cannot
fight infections in the blood.
Signs and symptoms of leukemia include:
lethargy, weakness, paleness, and/or dizziness
back, leg, and joint pain, headaches, and/or trouble standing or walking
easy bruising, unusual bleeding, frequent nose bleeds, bleeding gums, or petechiae (red
pinpoints on the skin)
repeated, frequent infections
fever that lasts for several days
loss of appetite and weight loss
swollen lymph nodes, bloated or tender stomach, and/or swollen liver or spleen
night sweats
irritability
Many of these symptoms mimic those of the flu, which can delay the diagnosis of
leukemia. Oftentimes, parents of children with leukemia note that their children were
unusually tired in the weeks before their diagnosis. Intuition also plays a role, as many
parents of children with leukemia note that something just did not feel right in the
days or weeks before their kids diagnosis.
Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is a rare childhood cancer of the nervous system. Roughly 1 in 6,000
children will be diagnosed with neuroblastoma by the time he or she are five years old.
A solid, malignant tumor that appears in the stomach or the spinal cord,
neuroblastoma is often present at birth, even though diagnosis is typically years later.
Diagnosis is often later because thats when kids begin to show some of the following
symptoms of the disease:
lump or mass in the abdomen, chest, neck, or pelvis
loss of appetite, nausea, weight loss, stomach pain, constipation, and/or difficulty
urinating
changes in the eyes, such as black eyes, a droopy eyelid, a pupil that does not
constrict, and/or vision problems
pain in the chest, difficulty breathing, and/or persistent cough
pain or numbness in the lower extremities, limping, inability to stand, and/or
stumbling
bone pain, fever, irritability, and/or listlessness
backaches (backaches in children are unusual)
Symptoms of neuroblastoma vary because they are often determined by the location of
the tumor. The majority of neuroblastomas are found in the abdomen, where parents
may detect a lump or mass when dressing or bathing their kids. Youngsters with a
tumor in their abdomen may feel full, experience a loss of appetite and suffer from
stomach pain, while a child with a tumor in his or her head or neck may have a
noticeable mass and an eyelid that droops.

Pituitary tumors
more common than you might think
Though few pituitary tumors are cancerous, the number of
pituitary tumors diagnosed each year may be far lower than
their actual number. According to the American Cancer
Society, roughly 7,000 pituitary tumors are diagnosed each
year, and nearly all of those are benign, or non-cancerous.
However, doctors have discovered that pituitary tumors are
more common than once thought.
Doctors who examined the brains of people who had died
or people who have had imaging tests like an MRI found
that as many as one in four people have a pituitary tumor
without even knowing it. These tumors can occur in
anyone, even children, and many rarely cause symptoms or
health problems. However, pituitary tumors apparent
prevalence makes it important that adults understand
pituitary tumors so theyre better equipped should they
receive a pituitary tumor diagnosis.
What is the pituitary gland?
The pituitary gland is found just above the nasal passages
and is directly connected to the hypothalamus, a region of
the brain responsible for a host of important functions. The
American Association of Neurological Surgeons notes that
the pituitary gland is often referred to as the master
gland, as it constantly monitors body functions, sending
signals to remote organs and glands to control their
function. The pituitary gland controls and coordinates
growth and development; the function of various organs,
including the kidneys; and the function of other glands,
such as the thyroid and adrenal glands.
What is a pituitary tumor?
Nearly all pituitary tumors are pituitary adenomas, or
benign tumors that do not spread outside the skull.
Adenomas are typically confined to the tiny space where the
pituitary gland sits, though they can grow into the
surrounding blood vessels, nerves and coverings of the
brain. The fourth most common intercranial tumor,
pituitary adenomas are the most common disease affecting
the pituitary gland, and most often affect people in their
30s or 40s, though they have been found in children as well.
A pituitary tumor that is malignant is known as a pituitary
carcinoma, and, though its possible, it likely will not spread
to other parts of the body. Perhaps because pituitary
carcinomas are so rare, it can be difficult for doctors to
distinguish them from an adenoma unless the tumor starts
to spread to another part of the body.
Some additional types of tumors do not develop from cells
of the pituitary gland, but they can grow into it and cause
damage. Such tumors are very rare, however.
Are there symptoms of pituitary tumors?
There are symptoms of pituitary tumors, most of which
result from dysfunction in the glands that secrete hormones.
Such dysfunction can cause overproduction of growth
hormones, leading to a condition such as giantism, or
underproduction of growth hormones, which can lead to
hypothyroidism, which causes retardation of growth and
mental development.
The most common side effect of a pituitary tumor is
compression of the optic nerves, which transmits impulses
from the retina to the brain. If compression of the optic
nerve occurs, a person will gradually lose his or her vision, a
loss that will first be noticed with the deterioration of lateral
peripheral vision.
If three or more of the following symptoms are present,
doctors might suspect a pituitary tumor:
Vision problems (blurred or double vision,
drooping eyelid)
Headaches in the forehead area
Nausea or vomiting
Impaired sense of smell
Sexual dysfunction
Depression
Fatigue
Infertility
Growth problems
Osteoporosis
Unexplained weight gain
Unexplained weight loss
Easy bruising
Aching joints
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Disrupted menses
Early menopause
Muscle weakness
How is a pituitary tumor diagnosed?
Doctors who suspect a pituitary tumor will give patients a
physical and test their vision to see if patients have lost their
peripheral vision. Hormone testing of the blood and urine
and imaging tests, such as an MRI, are used to confirm a
diagnosis.
Can a pituitary tumor be treated?
As with most health issues, the earlier a pituitary tumor is
detected the better a patients chance at being cured. In
addition, early intervention increases the chances a doctor can
control the tumor and its side effects.
Doctors treating a pituitary tumor can do so in three ways:
surgical removal of the tumor; radiation therapy to kill tumor
cells; or medication therapy to shrink or eradicate the tumor.

Cancer screening
guidelines
Early detection of cancer greatly increases a persons odds of surviving this potentially
deadly disease. Screening can range from relatively simple self-examinations to more
complicated procedures conducted by physicians. The following are the widely accepted
screening guidelines, courtesy of the American Cancer Society.
Breast cancer
Women should begin self-examinations of their breasts starting in their 20s. This helps
women familiarize themselves with their breasts early on, which makes it easier to
detect any abnormalities, including lumps, later in life.
In addition to breast self-exams, women should receive clinical breast exams, or CBEs,
every three years while in their 20s and 30s, and then an annual CBE starting at age 40.
The ACS also recommends women begin receiving annual mammograms starting at
age 40. Some doctors may also recommend women with a family history of breast
cancer or other significant risk factors receive an MRI in addition to a mammogram.
These additional tests are rarely necessary, but women at a higher risk of breast cancer
should discuss their options with their physicians.
Colorectal cancer and polyps
Men and women should begin screening for colorectal cancer and polyps beginning at
age 50. Polyps are growths on the inner surface of the colon that are often
noncancerous, but some can develop into cancer.
Some tests may be conducted to find both polyps and cancer, and these tests should be
conducted at various intervals. Beginning at age 50, men and women should get a
flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years, a colonoscopy every 10 years, a double-contrast
barium enema every five years, or a CT colonography, also known as a virtual
colonoscopy, every five years. When tests other than a colonoscopy are positive, then a
colonoscopy should be conducted as well.
Testing can also be conducted to detect colorectal cancer. Beginning at age 50, men and
women should receive an annual fecal occult blood test or a yearly fecal
immunochemical test. When results are positive, a colonoscopy should be conducted.
Lung cancer
Despite the prevalence of lung cancer, the ACS advises against screenings for lung
cancer in people whose risk for developing the disease is average. But the ACS does
recommend screenings for those individuals who are at high risk for the disease. These
include men and women who meet all of the following criteria:
55 to 74 years of age
in fairly good health
have at least a 30 pack-year smoking history and are either still smoking or have quit
smoking within the last 15 years
More information about lung cancer screening is available at www.cancer.org.
Endometrial (uterine) cancer
According to the ACS, at the time of menopause all women should discuss the risks
and symptoms of endometrial cancer, often referred to as uterine cancer. Detection
often begins with women themselves, who should report any bleeding or spotting to
their physicians immediately upon detection.
Some women may be candidates for yearly endometrial biopsies. This includes women
who have hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer, or HNPCC, a condition also known as
Lynch syndrome. Women known to carry HNPCC-linked gene mutations are also
candidates. Women from families with a tendency to get colon cancer where genetic
testing has not been done also are candidates for yearly endometrial biopsies. These
yearly biopsies should begin at age 35, and women should discuss the risks, benefits and
limitations of the tests with their physicians.
More information on cancer screenings is available at www.cancer.org.
Bone marrow is a bodily tissue instrumental to
human health. Bone marrow produces all three
types of blood cells, in addition to stem cells
and immune-system supporting lymphocytes.
Bone marrow transplants are often an option to
treat various cancers and immune system
disorders.
Stem cells can save lives
Stem cells are immature cells that lie in waiting
in bone marrow. The stem cells wait until weak,
unhealthy or damaged cells need to be replaced.
Stem cells then become specialized, turning into
the cells needed. They can transform into red or
white blood cells or even platelets and
lymphocytes. For this reason, stem cells have
long been studied and used in various therapies.
They can be harvested for certain cancer
treatments and for ongoing medical research
into other potential uses.
Stem cells are harvested for bone marrow
transplants. Donations of stem cells can be used
to treat a number of often incurable diseases
that affect the healthy function of bone marrow
in patients. The Bone Marrow Foundation says
approximately 50,000 blood and marrow
transplants are performed worldwide to treat
more than 70 types of illnesses, including some
that affect children. These diseases include
leukemia, lymphoma cancers and Hodgkins
Disease, among others. In certain instances, a
bone marrow transplant may be the only life-
saving procedure available.
Bone marrow donation
Donors are highly coveted, and there are a
number of organizations geared to matching
donors with recipients. The National Marrow
Donor Program, for example, has their Be The
Match Registry(R). Thousands of patients with
blood cancers and other life-threatening diseases
are waiting for donations. The donation process
typically goes as follows.
1. A potential donor will become part of a
registry. Donors between the ages of 18 and 44
provide the greatest chance for transplant
success. Patients are most likely to match
someone who shares their ancestry. A wide array
of ethnic groups are encouraged to become
donors.
2. A small sample of blood or a swab of cheek
cells will be taken to determine your human
leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue, which will
then be entered into a registry. There may be
a fee for testing and registering the HLA type.
3. If you are a match, you will be contacted
to confirm your willingness to donate. An
information session will be conducted, and
you will be given additional information
about the procedure, its potential risks and
the expected recovery process. A physical
examination will take place to ensure the
donation will be safe for you and the patient.
4. There are two different methods of
donation: peripheral blood stem cells, or
PBSC, and a marrow donation. The doctor in
charge will determine the method that is best
for the patient and the one most likely to be
successful. PBSC is a nonsurgical procedure
during which donors will be given injections
of a medication called filgrastim for five days.
This is intended to increase the number of
blood-forming cells in the bloodstream. A
blood donation is then given, wherein these
blood-forming cells are separated from the
blood. During a marrow donation, you will
be treated at a surgical outpatient center or
hospital. Under anesthesia, liquid marrow
will be drawn from the back of your pelvic
bone.
5. PBSC donors may feel muscle or bone
aches prior to the collection, which is a side
effect of the filgrastim injections. Marrow
donors can experience soreness in the lower
back for a few days after the procedure. Many
donors report feeling completely recovered
within two to three weeks after the procedure
has been completed.
6. Your donor center will follow up with you
until you are able to resume normal activity.
The more physically demanding your job, the
longer your recovery time is likely to be. A
typical recovery time is between one and
seven days.
Some transplant centers enable
communication between the donor and the
recipient and may even provide updates on
the recipients condition. However, others do
not allow contact and everything may remain
anonymous.
To become a donor, contact one of these
organizations: DKMS Registry
(www.dkmsamericas.org), The National
Marrow Donor Program (www.marrow.org),

Thousands upon thousands of women have battled breast
cancer. Some have pulled through the disease, while others
succumbed to the disease after a brave fight. Few people
who have waged war with breast cancer are better known
than Susan Komen, a name many instantly associate with
the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the most
widely known, largest and well-funded breast cancer
organization in the United States.
Susan G. Komen was born Susan Goodman in 1943 in
Peoria, Ill. According to her sister, Nancy, Susan was the
high school homecoming queen and a college beauty
queen. After graduating from college, Goodman returned
to her hometown and pursued modeling, eventually
marrying her high school sweetheart, Stan.
Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 after
finding a lump that subsequent testing revealed was
cancerous. Komen underwent a procedure called a
subcutaneous mastectomy, in which the outside of the
breast tissue was left intact, but the interior breast tissue
was removed. The doctor who did the procedure assured
Komen that she was cured. Despite urging her sister to get
a second opinion, Komen was convinced she was safe. But
within six months Komen found another lump under her
arm, and, by this point, it was evident that the cancer had
spread. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic soon determined the
cancer had metastasized to her lung and under her arm.
Komen underwent several different treatments to slow the
progression of the cancer, including radiation and intense
chemotherapy. However, the cancer continued to spread
and eventually her body developed a resistance to most of
the medication. During treatment, Komen repeatedly
spoke with her sister about her wish to make the
entire breast cancer experience and treatments in the
hospital more palatable for women, including
improving the appearance of waiting rooms and
treatment centers, and doing other things to help
comfort those who would find themselves in similar
situations in the future. Komen lost her battle with
breast cancer in 1980 at age 36. By the time of her
death, Komen had undergone nine operations and
three courses of chemotherapy and radiation.
Nancy Goodman Brinker then made it her mission to
do everything she could to help end breast cancer and
increase awareness of this potentially deadly disease.
In 1982, Brinker established the Susan G. Komen
Breast Cancer Foundation in her sisters memory.
Since its inception, the organization, now called
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, has provided funding
for basic, clinical and translational breast cancer
research projects. It also has become instrumental in
breast health education and urging women to do self-
screening while promoting annual mammograms.
Through the years, the foundation has teamed up
with many well-known businesses, brands and
organizations as part of its fundraising efforts. To
date, the organization has invested $750 million in
breast cancer research, awarding many thousands of
dollars in grants in countries around the world.
Through her struggle with breast cancer, Susan
Goodman Komen unknowingly inspired an
organization that has helped to save the lives of
millions. Learn more at ww5.komen.org.
Learn about the woman behind the cure
The side effects of cancer
treatment can be very difficult to
handle. For example, cancer-
related fatigue can be vastly
different from the fatigue a non-
patient may feel from time to
time, proving far more taxing than
a more routine bout of fatigue
that can often be combatted with
a nap or efforts to get a better
nights sleep.
While side effects like fatigue and
nausea and vomiting are
challenging, many cancer patients
know such side effects exist. But
those same people may not know
about the prevalence of insomnia
among cancer patients, many of
whom report higher rates of
insomnia than the general
population.
According to the American
Cancer Society, numerous studies
have shown that the majority of
cancer patients suffer from
insomnia, with prevalence rates as
high as 63 percent. One such study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology
analyzed data collected on 823 patients undergoing chemotherapy for a range of cancer
types. The results were eye-opening, as researchers found that 43 percent of patients
experienced insomnia syndrome while another 36 percent experienced symptoms of
insomnia. In essence, nearly 80 percent of the studys participants were either suffering
from insomnia or experiencing significant symptoms of the syndrome characterized by
habitual sleeplessness.
Researchers opinions regarding whats behind the link between cancer and insomnia
suggest it may not be just a side effect of cancer treatment, but also a byproduct of the
anxiety a cancer patient may feel upon diagnosis. Researchers behind the study also noted
that insomnia among cancer patients is likely under-diagnosed, and that patients should
take it upon themselves to begin a dialogue with their physicians regarding any issues they
are having falling asleep at night. Doctors may be able to suggest some helpful tactics to
conquer insomnia, or they may even prescribe insomnia medication.
Cancer patients battling insomnia also can take it upon themselves to institute certain
habits that may improve their sleep. The following are a few helpful habits for cancer
patients looking to conquer their insomnia.
* Maintain a sleep schedule. Waking up at the same time each morning and going to be at
the same time each night can make it easier for your body to fall asleep. Sticking to a sleep
schedule essentially programs your body, which will grow accustomed to a routine sleep
schedule and increase the likelihood that you will fall asleep sooner rather than later.
* Reduce caffeine consumption. Caffeinated beverages can interfere with a good nights
sleep and make it harder for the body to enter a deep sleep. Though it may seem as
though caffeine is a quick but short-lived energy fix, the effects of caffeine can last for as
long as 24 hours. Overdoing it with caffeine, even if that fifth cup of coffee is long before
you put head to pillow, can have a significant and negative impact on your sleep.
* Quit smoking. As if having cancer wasnt already a strong enough reason to quit
smoking, cancer patients also should know that the nicotine found in cigarettes and other
tobacco products is a stimulant that can negatively affect your ability to get a good nights
sleep.
* Skip the nightcaps. Many cancer patients steer clear of alcohol, but those who feel a
nightcap helps them fall asleep may be doing more harm than good. Consuming alcohol right
before bed may help you fall asleep quickly, but you can expect that sleep to be interrupted
once the effects of the alcohol wear off. This disruption to your sleep cycle makes it harder to
get the kind of deep, rejuvenating sleep cancer patients need.
* Eat an early dinner. Going to bed before your body has fully digested your dinner can be
harmful in a variety of ways. Food that isnt digested before the body goes to sleep is likely to
be stored as fat, causing weight gain that can add to the feelings of fatigue many cancer
patients experience. In addition, quality of sleep is negatively affected if your body is still
digesting dinner when you lay down to go to sleep. If you start eating early dinners and find
yourself hungry around bedtime, eat a small snack an hour or two before bedtime. Hunger
can hinder your ability to get a good nights sleep, so a small snack to quell that hunger
should be easy to digest and your sleep should not be affected.
