Frequently Asked Questions

Hot Keys Question: In Windows, when I press the Hot Key combination (Control, left shift, D), instead of opening Stedmans, I get todays date. Why? Solution 1: The dictionary must be loaded into memory before the Hot Keys will work. When you first turn on your computer, click on the Stedmans icon and then minimize it. Later in the day when you need to look up a word, Stedmans will still be resident in memory and you can use the Hot Keys to open it quickly. Solution 2: If youre using WordPerfect for Windows, select the Stedmans icon from the Tool Bar and the dictionary will open without having been activated in memory. (WP for Mac does not install to the tool bar.)

Stedmans Concise 1.0

17

Solution:

Click on the arrow to the right of the search box and select from the pull-down menu. In this example, type heart & lung, not heart AND lung. The search will only work if you use the operators & (for AND) | (for OR) ! (for NOT)

Spellchecking Question: I also have the Stedmans Plus Spellchecker. When I run the Spellchecker and it stops on a word, Id like to be able to switch to Stedmans Concise and look up the word. Why cant I do that? Answer: Stedmans Plus and Stedmans Concise are two separate applications, and they dont work interactively as you describe. When you have finished spellchecking your document, you can go back and look up the terms in Stedmans Concise.

Copy/ Replace Short-cut in WordPerfect Windows

If you activate Stedmans Concise from the WordPerfect Tools menu (as opposed to from the Windows Program Menu), you can use the Replace button on the Stedmans menu to copy from a definition into your WordPerfect document as follows: In your WP document, place the cursor in the position where you want the Stedmans definition to be placed. Toggle back to Stedmans and select the information to be copied. Click the Replace button on the main Stedmans menu and the definition will be copied into the WP document.

Copy and Paste Keys Windows

In order for the Hot Keys and the Replace function to work correctly, Stedmans Concise needs to use the same copy and paste keystrokes used by the primary application. There are normally Alt + E, C to copy and Alt + E, P. If the primary application uses different key strokes they can be modified. If necessary, an extra Del or Backspace can be added to prevent the application from adding unwanted spaces. To change the application copy/paste keys, choose Preferences, Hot Key.

Types of Searching
Please Note: All screens shown in this section are Windows screens. Mac screens are not shown, but Mac users will find only minor differences between their screens and the screens shown here.

There are five ways to search SCMD, as shown on this screen.

5 search types

Choose from five different search types depending on whether you want to search for a main term or a term within a definition.

Browse on Index
As you type in a term, the Browse Index displays that term and an alphabetical listing of the terms following it:

terms following the term being looked up

Browse on Index is the default search type, and it is the best type of search to use when in a search for a head word.
Stedmans Concise 1.0 35

Search on Headword
Displays only the term being looked up:

in a headword search, the Browse Index is empty

Search on Headword displays only the term you are looking up, so it is a much narrower search than Browse on Index. If, for example, you misspell the word, you will get a message word not found.

Search on Definitions
Lets you search for a term or terms within the definitions of the dictionary. In the following example, SCMD found 32 terms where the term cardiology is part of a definition:

32 terms with the word cardiology in the definition

Use Search on Definitions to look for terms within definitions. Within this type of search you can use Search Commands to search for combinations of words within definitions.
36 Stedmans Concise 1.0

Search on Anagrams
This is a rarely needed feature in medical word reference. Type a word in the search field, click on Lookup and the dictionary will show you all the words that are anagrams (have the same letters) of the lookup word.

Anagrams of the term Galen

Use the Anagrams search type to find anagrams (different words that have the same letters) of terms found in Stedmans.

Search Tips

On a definition search, use these search commands to further narrow your search. To get this search command menu, click on the arrow to the right of the Find box.

Search Commands
Because a single keyword may generate a very long search list, Stedmans Concise lets you add special search commands to make your search pattern more specific. Click on the arrow next to the Find box to see the legal operators.

click here to open search command box

Select from the search command list to further define a definition search.

When you type & between two keywords, Stedmans Concise finds only those entries that have both keywords in their definitions. Example: heart & lung (This search pattern would find every entry that contains both the word heart and the word lung)

When you type | between two keywords, Stedmans Concise finds entries that have either the first word or the second word in their definitions. Example: heart | lung (This search pattern would find every entry that contains the word heart and every entry that contains the word lung) When you type ! between two words Stedmans Concise narrows a search and retrieves only those entries that have the first keyword in their definitions but not the second Example: heart ! lung (This search pattern would find every entry that contains the word heart but does not contain the word lung) When you type ( ) around keywords, Stedmans Concise searches for the keyword enclosed in parentheses first. Only one set of parentheses can be used in a search. Example: (vein OR artery) NOT circulation (This search pattern would find every entry that contains the word vein as long as that definition does not contain the word circulation and every definition that contains the word artery as long as that definition does not contain the word circulation) To use the search commands, 1 2 Type a keyword in the text entry box. Click the search command buttons to insert a search command, or type in the search command directly.

IMPORTANT: Keywords must be separated by a search command. The commands must be &, |, or !. The search will not work if you type AND, OR, or NOT.

Not more than two commands can be used. Because only two commands can be used, only one set of parentheses can be used. Parentheses must have both an opening and a closing parenthesis.

Searching with Wildcards

You can use wildcard characters (? and *) to stand for a letter in a word. This is useful when you cant remember exactly how to spell a word. The question mark (?) wildcard represents one letter. For example, typing hem? finds all four-letter words that start with hem. The asterisk wildcard (*) represents any number of characters. For example, typing hema* generates a list of all words starting with hema. To use the wildcard search, 1 Change Search Type to Search on Headword. Type the search pattern in the Find box. Open the choice of operators by clicking on the arrow to the right of the Find box. Select either ? or *, or simply type a character in. Click Lookup. While the search list is being assembled, go to the definition of any word by choosing the Pause button, then double-clicking the word. Click the Pause button to restart the search list assembly again.

Note that case sensitivity does not work for wildcard searches. All words that match the entered word will be found whether they have the same capitalization as the entered word or not. If two words are entered to be searched for, the wildcard search will find two (or more) word combinations that match the entered text and single words that match the total number of letters of the entered text excluding any spaces. The pattern he????e?t, for example, will find heartbeat (and) Hess Test.
