Weed Attack
by Pippa Greenwood
sk a dictionary the definition of a weed and youll read that its a plant growing in the wrong place. Ask a gardener, and theyll tell you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.
rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.
Off with their Heads Whatever the weed problem, its essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that one years seed is seven years weed isnt far from the truth.
Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosetteforming plants wont be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, its likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as youll be saving a lot of time in the long run.
Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming tiny bulbils or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then. Hoe, hoe, hoe An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. Theyre a great way to weed your garden, especially if its largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly.
Stop Stowaways When youre next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying: especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and farreaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, dont succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or 10
Laying Carpet For large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic or else youll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet.
Careful what you Compost Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems.

The Nutcracker

artists and even choreography will be different. It will feel like a different show altogether, but still with the same high level of quality. The Premiere of The Nutcracker transforms the Classical Ballet into a Fairy Tale. Featuring a timeless score from incredible composer Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky, Nutcracker is a certified Russian classic, replete with evocative music and beautiful dance. Full of mystery and romance, this ballet has captured the imagination of many generations over the years and continues to attract audiences worldwide and inspires both young and old. Alexej Ignatow added: We often get asked how would you encourage people who have never seen a ballet before, to come and attend a ballet for the first time? And my instant reply is that you dont need to be an expert in classical ballet or music. We ensure that the set and costumes make the production easy to follow. The music is beautiful and sometimes even if you lost in the plot, just close your eyes to enjoy the music. The Nutcracker ballet story is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King written by E.T.A. Hoffmann. It tells the story of Marie, a rather sad little girl, whose godfather Drosselmeyer gives her a Nutcracker doll as a present on Christmas Eve which turns into a Prince, and the magic starts Russian State Ballet and Opera House is a gem for the Russian cultural traditions, bringing as they do the passion and vibrancy of Russian character to one of the most well-known ballets. They have ensured that this classical ballet remains just as spell bounding today as it was when it was first performed over 120 years ago. It includes all the favourite elements of the Tchaikovskys music everyone listens to on radio or at home, such as The Spanish Dance, The Arabian Dance, The Russian Dance, The Chinese Dance, The Waltz of the Flowers and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Nutcracker is considered by many to be one of the greatest Classical Ballets of all time! The Russian State Ballet and Opera House will be coming to Llandudno on Monday 11 November at the Venue Cymru. Do not delay in purchasing your ticket for the greatest Ballet, The Nutcracker.
fter last years success, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back with a new and vibrant Classical Ballet, The Nutcracker a family orientated production with the Fairy Tale element and some added glitz from the beautiful costumes. There will be no surprise to any that this production will be of the most delicate, intimate and powerful kind. This Company is known for its attention to details and, more particularly, for its dramatization in dance of the tragedy and beauty that this ballet is known for.Accompanying this performance is its own, unique and enthusiastic large live Orchestra with over 30 musicians to maintain an exuberance of performance in this new production which will leave you astounded.Join us for an unforgettable journey in the run-up to Christmas and be part of the magic as it unfolds. We met with Alexej Ignatow, the producer of Russian State Ballet & Opera House and asked, what make his company so unique and stand out from the rest. Russian State Ballet and Opera House was founded to represent quality and passion for Ballet and Opera at the highest level. Unlike many other companies that travel to Europe with ballet and opera productions, we only focus on w orking with established theatres in the Russian Federation. These theatres have many years of experience and, most importantly, they have an established spine of directors and leaders which have gone through the best artistic institutions in Russia and the former Soviet Union. Our logo is the assurance of a quality production. Every year we aim to bring a different artist to the UK, which means that although you may have seen a Nutcracker ballet one year, next time the set, costumes,

s it really twenty years since the first Festival of Speed was held at Goodwood by the Earl of March? What tremendous amounts of pleasure it has provided for enthusiasts from all over the world who have revelled in the abundance of fabulous machinery to be seen, and being able to mingle with the many famous people who drove them. The roar of the vintage engines of those leviathans of the track are a complete contrast to the scream of the modern F1 engines as these very special cars and motorcycles are driven up the famous hill, and a friendly wave from someone like Stirling Moss or John Surtees to you in particular as they drive past in some famous car that has made history, will be a moment you will never forget! However, there is one section of the festival organised by Cartier which they call Style et Luxe, where some of the worlds most beautiful and stylish cars are displayed, many of which costing millions of pounds - if their private owners ever deigned to sell them! Yes, I know that modern stylish and luxurious cars are made just a short distance away at Rolls-Royces Goodwood factory, but the variety of wonderful models spanning so many years to be seen in the Cartier collection tell about cars with such purity of line and meticulous workmanship, expressing
the imaginations of famous designers, and being more like sculpted works of art rather than just a means of transport! Streamlining! Oh how we all longed to see such bodywork on post war British cars, once the factories had begun producing them again instead of aeroplanes and tanks etc. I suppose the 1938 Morris 8 Series E had shown small signs of this with its curved radiator and faredin headlamps! The trouble was that all the Hollywood films we saw seemed to have these large and exotic streamlined cars gliding around, such as the 1949 Delahaye 175 S Roadster, pictured above. The curved backed Standard Vanguards and Jowett Javelins couldnt compare with that! Come to think of it, neither could we! Where would we be able to park such a monster, especially with its dismal turning circle due to its spatted front wheels! Still, we were learning fast and in the 50s and 60s when we produced the Bentley Continental and the E-Type Jaguar, it was the turn of the Americans to admire our cars for their style, and superb engineering! There is no doubt that the world has seen some beautiful cars since then, but if you really want to see the most exotic masterpieces ever built, you will always find them at Cartiers Style et Luxe enclosure at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

d been looking forward to this moment for years. For some in the office too young to remember, it meant nothing but for me it was a coming of age. Finally Id be driving a Porsche with the famous 911 HUL number plate. Ive been a motoring nut for years, spending money I often didnt have on car magazines, long before I could even drive. And it was on those glossy pages that I became familiar with the famous plate. Owned by Porsche GB for decades it was the first private plate the firm acquired and ever since has taken pride of place on the Porsche press fleet Turbo models. Id seen it flying through the air in pictures on the pages of Evo, shot by countless talented car snappers over the years, and now it was my time to drive it. Heres my week behind the wheel of Porsches fastest 997 edition the 911 Turbo S with a very special moniker.
numbers and letters, what the plate meant to car fans. Most people were more interested in the colour our test car had arrived in. Paint jobs make or break cars and the camouflage green our test car had arrived in was clearly splitting opinion. Still, it could have been painted pink for all I cared as what was sitting over the rear wheels was far more of interest to me. The 3.8-litre, turbo-charged lump produces a whopping 530bhp and 700Nm of torque thanks to a tweaked turbo output. The drive north to our photoshoot at Rockingham was one of the longest (traffic) but most enjoyable Ive ever had.
automatic gearbox and launch control system mean thats very achievable every time. Engage Sport Plus, floor the throttle with your foot on the brake, and the revs settle at a heady rpm. When you lift off the brake the car thunders towards the finish line in a cacophony of air sucking, turbo whooshing and tyres ripping chunks out of the asphalt. All I have to do is steer. You can see the results of our race in another video on YouTube

Photoshoot day at Rockingham and weve got 15 cars lined up for a series of tests. Also here is three times British superbike championship winner John Reynolds on the latest Suzuki GSX-R1000. Two tanks of fuel into the loan and Im impressed the Turbo S is returning 26mpg. My old Focus ST never got any better than 23mpg on a long journey and considering this has such an almighty power output thats very impressive. Today Im heading into London for a meeting with the Queen. Well, I say meeting, I really mean a concert in her garden for the Coronation Festival. For what is essentially a rival to a Ferrari 458 or McLaren 12C, the Turbo S is fantastically well behaved in the clogged up capital. Visibility is excellent and although its got a low splitter

at the front, speed humps arent really a problem nor tight underground and overpriced car parks. The drive back south is a magical one. Londons streets are a joy in the small hours of the morning and each traffic light gives me a chance to test the wifes neck muscles.
Day Seven
Day Four-Six
Its the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Porsche is headlining the event, celebrating 50 years of the 911, and I cant quite believe Ive got the honour of driving 911 HUL to the south coast celebration of combustion. Its clear on the way there and back that the plate doesnt just hold sway with me. I lose count of the number of phones I see trained on the Porsche, capturing pictures for tweets
Another business trip north beckons and my colleague and I decide to leave after the evenings rush hour. Gosport to Chester some 250 miles lay ahead and even at 9pm the digital temperature gauge is reading 25 degrees C. Hot tarmac and sticky tyres make the trip a delight as we collect the cast and extras of Bugs Life on the bonnet. The seats get a little uncomfortable over long distance theyre fixed carbon fibre jobs but apart from that the Turbo S is a competent tourer. Its time for 911 HUL to return to Porsche. After a week behind the wheel of the monster Im smitten. Yes, the ride is firm and the tyre noise a little intrusive. Granted the seats arent the most
cosseting and the 997 interior is showing its age now the 991 has arrived. However, never have I driven a car quite so intoxicating, quite so full of character and quite so mind-alteringly fast as the Turbo S. The fact it was wearing one of the most iconic plates in motoring folklore simply made the whole experience all the more special.

Its a popular location for a Sunday stroll, a family walk on mostly level paths and the whole circuit only takes 40-60 minutes depending on your pace. Theres a tea shop selling Welsh ice cream on the left bank and in bad weather the mountain ponies come down to graze, often with young at foot. On one such amble, I said to husband, wouldnt this make a great location for a hotel? Maybe with a huge decked area jutting over the head of the lake. What a wonderful vista to have a restaurant overlooking the water, imagine the sunsets! Oh, the romance of it all. Why dont you use it for a book location? Then you can build a hotel in your head, he said. Our imagination ran riot, well, mostly mine, although we soon became bored with just the hotel and began to spice it up, adding a character hell-bent on destruction, manslaughter, domestic violence and eventually, running out of sensible plans, we set it all on fire! What a story we turned a pleasant picnic area into a scene of death and devastation! (Ill have to keep my eye on that idea of his though, the one about building things in my imagination. I can see how it might become used and abused beyond its original motive). And I havent forgotten the sexy centaur. Is it relevant to White Horizon? Well, yes, he gallops in somewhere towards the end Oh, and I kept the fire, the manslaughter and the domestic violence. But it is romantic as well, trust me.
hen does a romance become something else? When I first started writing and submitting manuscripts in the traditional way, it was either a romance or it wasnt. The definitions were very clear, but incredibly restrictive. Although I think its a huge step forward to have the freedom of being a cross-genre writer, I must admit I am sometimes baffled by the many sub-divisions in the romance slot and it seems they are constantly evolving. Just for fun, I had a look at the top five most er unusual genres in romance. At number five then, Amish Romance. This one speaks for itself, but who, other than the Amish community, would read them?
White Horizon is Jans third title. All of her books are available in all e-book formats. Visit her website for all links and details. janruth.com
Number four was interesting, Nascar Romance. This is where the hero is a driver and all the action is car related, nothing too odd about that, but number three had me cringing The Personification of Death. As the title may suggest, these novels feature a romantic interlude with the Grim Reaper. Number two was plain old Romantic Suspense, but number one on the list Centaur Romance! Okay I like horses, but really? The piece said it was nothing to do with My Little Pony, but youll love it if you are a horse lover and like sex with hairy men Maybe my work is more conventional than I thought! But I did get to wondering if White Horizon could allude to any of these trends. Now, the Nascar thing I can understand a little, since my male character did the first thing that any working class hero coming into a lot of money might do - buy a fast car; and the Romantic Suspense speaks for itself and is extremely relevant to White Horizon. The Grim Reaper does indeed show himself to one of the characters but you may or may not be relieved to learn there is no sex scene. No, Im sticking with dramatic romance. Or is it romantic drama? The location re White Horizon is certainly both romantic, and dramatic. Crafnant, is far more accessible than it looks in the pictures. I say accessible, but to be fair the single track road is not built for the modern car, and if someone needs to pass, dont look down. Llyn Crafnant is a 3/4 mile-long lake (well, reservoir actually) that lies in a beautiful valley where the northern edge of Gwydyr Forest meets the lower slopes of the Carneddau mountains and, more specifically, the ridge of Cefn Cyfarwydd. The head of the lake offers what could be regarded as one of the finest views, across the lake to the mountains above, in North Wales. Crafnant takes its name from craf, an old Welsh word for garlic, and nant, a stream or valley. Even today the valley of Afon Crafnant smells of wild garlic when it flowers.

Nothing To Be Afraid Of
If you dont open your door to trick-or-treaters, try opening up a book with a terrifying plotline. There are plenty of great novels and short stories to start your knees knocking and teeth chattering for this time of year
1984 George Orwell. Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past. Winston Smith works in the Record Department at the Ministry of Truth and is beavering away rewriting history to manipulate the present and future. Under the watchful eye of Big Brother, Winston secretly plots to overthrow the totalitarian regime. Hes going to need an ally and he thinks hes found it in the form of new love, fellow-worker Julia. One of the most influential books ever written, Orwells dystopian vision has spawned many an imitator and many a reality TV show. Oh, the irony. American Psycho Bret Easton Ellis If this book teaches you one lesson, its to screen people thoroughly because even the handsome ones can be absolute nutters. Enter Patrick Bateman: Wall Street yuppie by day and psychopathic serial killer of young ladies by night. Lets just say, he has a lot of nasty habits he wouldnt want to list on his dating profileand theyre all described in graphic detail for us. Proof that the devil takes many pleasing guises.
The Shining Stephen King For Jack Torrance, taking a new job as caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel is far from the fresh start hes hoping for. Off-season at a deserted hotel means a playground for madness, leaving Jack and his unsuspecting family isolated and in danger. Five year old Danny Torrance is the only one who can sense the horrors to come. Hes gifted with the shining, a sort of sixth-sense for the sinister and the threatening. As the snow begins to fall, the curtain of madness descends. The Day of the Triffids John Wyndham Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the garden If youve ever hated that morning after the night before feeling then Bill Masen is having the day from hell. He misses a major meteorite shower because his eyes have been bandaged, but the next morning is far from a sight for sore eyes. He wakes to find everyone else has been blinded and the world has become a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Written in a time rife with Cold War paranoia, Wyndhams vision of bio-warfare has made this a science fiction classic.
The Enemy Charlie Higson Your teenagers will either love this book, or itll terrify the pants off them. In a post-apocalyptic London, all adults have been infected with a sickness, effectively rendering them zombies. Theyre hungry and crazed and are running amuck in the capital, leaving everyone under fourteen who have survived the zombie virus to either find a place to hide, or come up with a plan to defeat them. Its the first in an absolutely cracking series. Just dont make it your bedtime reading. The Best Short Stories of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allen Poe The master of gothic horror, Poe doesnt fail to send a chill down even the most rigid of spines. He has perfected the art of the psychological thriller with his tales of lunatics, ghosts and murderers all riddled with the human characteristics of jealousy, deviousness, lust for revenge and sometimes just pure hatred. Whether its the da-dum, da-dum of The Tell-Tale Heart or the haunting refrain of The Raven, his tales of terror will crawl inside your head, make a little nest, and stay thereuntil youre just about to nod off to sleep.

Shopper you know you can do better, but deep inside you crave the adrenaline rush that comes from holding back till the very last moment. 3. The Smugly Organised Shopper Its mid September and not only have you already compiled your gift list, youve probably placed your first online order, for that must-have new gadget that will be all the rage this Christmas. By the 1st December all your presents will be immaculately wrapped, labelled and stored in boxes under the bed. Similarly your Christmas food shopping will be a breeze, as you already have most of the things you will need, stored away in your cupboard or freezer. Organised Shopper, you are the envy of all your chaotically disorganised peers. But watch out - are you ready to face the bitter resentment of friends who shopped too late to get that must-have gadget? 4. The Wishlister Do you remember the Good Old Days when Christmas presents were a surprise? Of course, some of them might not have been such a good surprise (especially Auntie Beryls knitted tank tops) but the mystery surrounding Christmas gifts led to a well-intentioned, communal impulse to pretend everything was lovely on
that time of year again: the month when you start making lists of the Christmas presents you need to buy for your nearest and dearest. We all approach Christmas shopping in a different way but some of us display a more creative edge than others when shopping for that perfect gift. See if you can spot the shopping technique that most resembles yours in the list below: 1. The Very, Very Early Bird You are the shopper who can be found cramming your basket full of cut-price wrapping paper, Christmas cards and toiletry gift sets in the January sales. No matter that those beautifully boxed hot toddy mixing kits failed to interest shoppers in the pre-Christmas rush. Now theyre reduced to half price you can think of at least three relatives who would just LOVE to receive them next Christmas.
32
Its
Well done, Very Early Bird. You might save yourself a good deal of money, but will you remember where youve hidden all those cut-price goodies by next December? 2. The Last Minute Man You are the antithesis of the Very Early Bird: someone who just cant find the motivation to buy presents until three hours before the shops are due to close on Christmas Eve. Then you dash round the streets with a look of sheer panic on your face, desperately hoping that the items on your list are not out of stock. If you shop online, then its likely that you delay your search until the day when the free delivery option is no longer available and end up spending as much on postage as you do on the presents themselves. Come on, Last Minute

the day: Oooh, a hot water bottle cover - just what I needed! Nowadays the element of surprise is completely missing, and all recipients seem to do is mentally tick off gifts that, three months earlier, they entered on their Amazon wishlist. This habit leads to lazy present buying: theres no need to spend time thinking about what your nearest and dearest would like when all you need to do is follow an on-screen link and click a button. Dear Wishlister, while we understand your desire to buy something your friend or relative really wants, wed like to see you use a little more imagination and effort this Christmas. 5. The Crafty Maker Youve been watching too
many Kirstie Allsopp shows on TV and you now believe that the way to show real love at Christmas is to give friends and family a gift that you have made yourself. Youve already made your own Christmas bunting and tree decorations. Youve knitted a festive cushion for the cats basket and hung a wreath made out of recycled yoghourt pots on the front door. Now you are preparing to stay up until midnight each night, stitching felt animals and painting small items of second hand furniture with Farrow and Ball tester pots. I know, Crafty Maker: you cant wait for the look of surprise on your familys faces when they open their presents to find something that you have carefully crafted out of papier mache
and driftwood, but please dont be disappointed if their wan smiles of appreciation suggest that they would have preferred the latest video game.
Do you recognise yourself in any of these descriptions? If so, dont panic. It would be a very dull world if we all shopped and celebrated in the same way. Christmas a unique time of the year when the effort we make for family and friends is allimportant. However you approach your Christmas shopping, its always the thought that counts.

his years Bonfire Night will see Britains population stocking up on pyrotechnics and hoping for a starry night into which they will launch their rockets and colourful array of exploding projectiles. Indeed, the popularity of fireworks never seems to wane, and despite the ubiquitous nature of this form of entertainment, its an occasion that never fails to impress. And Guy Fawkes commemoration by no means holds a monopoly on the format. An increasing number of dates outside the 5th of November fill Britains calendar with spectacular displays at many events: New Years Eve, Cowes Week, pop festivals,

up to speeds of 150 mph. So, if that empty bottle in which you hope to plant your biggest rocket happens to topple over, thats the speed it will be racing towards your neighbours fence, or worse, towards those standing nearby. Despite the hazards of pyrotechnics, a few precautions will see you enjoying the action in safety. There is plenty of information online and from local authorities to make for a safe and enjoyable night, so be sure to seek it out before lighting the touch paper or joining an organised event. The Business of Pyrotechnics The history of fireworks dates back to China in the 7th century where displays accompanied festivities, a
trend that spread to many other cultures around the world. The popularity of these displays created a firework manufacturing industry and the muchrespected profession of the pyrotechnician. It seems, however, that the mainstay of the industry is harking back to its Chinese roots. The business in Britain is now modest, only numbering around 40 companies, which employ a few hundred people fulltime, although this number rises to around 4,000 during busy periods. Britains manufacturing side, however, is suffering since the majority of fireworks are now made in China and imported. The squeeze on materials and labour costs, plus fierce competition in the business, has caused the UKs industry
to downsize and concentrate on specialist markets and displays, rather than manufacture. There are also concerns that the standard of products coming into the country from China and the Far East might be dropping, and will have an adverse bearing on safety. Despite these concerns, our love affair with the spectacle continues. And for Britain, Guy Fawkes Night provides enough history and national enthusiasm to step out into the cold November air to indulge just one more time.

Beauty
If you dream of long, luscious locks but are stuck with limp and lifeless tresses, you might be tempted to turn to hair extensions for a quick and easy fix. Celebrities everywhere wouldnt be seen without them, and more and more they are becoming an essential beauty buy for many women. But there is a lot to consider before you take the plunge and invest in extensions, and thats why we have compiled a guide to which ones are right for you and your hair.
Extensions can be made from either real human hair, synthetic hair or a mixture of both. The more expensive the extensions are, the more likely they are to be made from 100% human hair. This is because using the real thing makes for a head of manageable, natural-looking locks
38
What look do you want to achieve when youre wearing extensions? If you prefer a very natural look that blends seamlessly with your own hair, it is essential to find extensions in a shade that matches it perfectly. Generally many brands organise their colours in the same way as hair dyes, so that its easy to determine the correct hue for you. Colours range from the lightest shade of blonde to the deepest shade of black and incorporate all

warm and cool variations. And, if you fancy a few sections of bold colour, then your options are limitless. You can easily pick up extensions in a range of vibrant shades, and whats more they are usually cheaper and are perfect for occasional use.
Extensions come in a vast range of textures, so that they will blend with your own locks. There are straight lengths, spiral curls and everything in between. Its important to match the texture to your own hair for the extensions to lie and fall properly.
Application
There are many ways to apply extensions to your hair and some can be more
comfortable, gentle and affordable than others. Remember hair extensions are meant to enhance your hair, not damage it, so always make the health and condition of your own hair a priority. Clip-in/Tie-in - These extensions are ideal for occasional use and can be taken out and applied easily to achieve a variety of different looks. Because of the way they are joined to the hair, they dont always look natural and can be obvious to the touch. Heat Fusion These can provide long lasting results, with a natural looking finish. However, because heat is used in the application process, this method can damage your own hair. Cold Fusion - Unlike heat
fusion, cold fusion doesnt use any heat for application, meaning that your natural hair wont be damaged. The results are very natural looking, as well as long lasting. Weft This can look very natural when applied correctly, although to the touch a weft can feel chunky if not applied with skill. Microbead - These extensions dont need glue or heat to be applied, which limits damage to your own natural hair. The extensions are fixed in place using a small bead. With a little bit of thought and preparation, you will soon be on your way to those long, luscious locks youve been dreaming about.

She has a many years of experience within the semi permanent makeup and aesthetics field and is best positioned to advise clients on their individual needs. The semi permanent treatments carried out are unique in that they are done using pharmaceutical grade pigments that are CE marked that dont change colour as they fade. All the machines that are used are all CE market which means they are rigourously tested for safety. The treatments start with a pain fee allergy test. In the case of eyebrow enhancements measurements are taken and the eyebrows drawn on and the shape perfected and agreed before the procedure is commenced. After the initial treatment the client is brought back between 30 and 60 days for a top up treatment to ensure the pigments holds. Lips are also drawn on and the shape agreed before hand. Eyeliners treatments vary from eyelash enhancements to the latino eyeliner and the double line liner. In addition Mel is also qualified to correct and remove semi permanent makeup that has been carried out by other technicians that may have not understood their clients requirements. Stretch Mark and Scar reduction. This procedure involves causing a precision trauma to the area which causes the bodies own defence mechanisms to heal the scar/stretch mark and reduce its appearance. It is a comfortable and effective procedure. Tattoo removal With the increase popularity of tattoos tattoo removal procedures are also increasing due to names of a partner long since gone being present or to improve appearances for a job interview or even just plain sick of them. The procedure offered at Divine is comfortable, effective and colour independent. It involves tattooing a cream into the existing tattoo which binds to the ink in the tattoo. The bodies own natural healing powers do the rest by expelling the cream and the ink in the form of a scab which falls off in a couple of weeks with the ink in it. As you can see the way to a beautiful younger looking you is only a step away at Divine Hair and Beauty. For more information on treatments please call Divine on 01492 864090

Drinking
Water is one of the most basic needs for human life. Although we can survive without food for around three weeks, we cant manage without water for more than about three days. The mantra of drink eight glasses of water a day is repeated again and again as the ultimate goal for good health. But actually its a myth and its not really known where it came from. How can it be true when we are all different sizes, some of us are active and some are sedentary, and the weather may be freezing or sweltering? Your water intake doesnt even have to come from water. That is, fruit and vegetables, soups, milk and soft drinks and even teas and coffees, despite being slightly diuretic - are all sources of fluid. Again another urban myth is that only pure water counts and that simply isnt true. Although the obvious thing to say is to drink when you are thirsty, as we age the ability to feel thirst deteriorates. So you should be conscious of this, and particularly if you have been active in warm weather, increase your fluid intake for the rest of the day. But dont go from one extreme to the other; if you feel you have become dehydrated make an effort to drink little and often. It can be dangerous to consume a very high quantity of fluid in a short time. One of the easiest ways to tell if you need to drink more is to pay attention to your urinary habits. If it has been many hours since you last passed water and when you do go your urine is dark yellow, then it is time to increase your fluids.

Pyracantha - Firethorn
Pyracantha is an easy to grow, low maintenance, evergreen shrub that can be trained up walls, around doors or used to create a hedge. Its the classic home security plant as it is dense and extremely spiky. As a bonus, its a great way of attracting birds to your garden. The plant provides shelter for nesting and roosting birds as well as winter food. Fragrant white flowers bloom between May and June which attract a myriad of bees. By autumn these flowers turn into a showy mass of red, orange or yellow berries depending on the variety. Birds feast on these berries during the difficult winter months. Pyracantha prefers a well-drained healthy soil in full sun or partial shade, but will thrive in most soils. Good quality soil and lots of sunshine increases the berry production. Pyracantha is fully hardy and grows to around 3m. It can be kept in check by pruning but take care as the thorns are vicious. Wear heavy gloves. New flowers are produced on the previous years growth so ensure you dont remove that. Its easier to prune while the plant is in flower so you cut back to the existing flowers.

A conservatory extends summer through to winter and creates the perfect link between the house and the garden. But how do you ensure that this is a truly versatile room, one thats useable all year round and that suits your look and your lifestyle? Katherine Sorrell looks at ways to make your conservatory a space thats functional, beautiful and great to be in.
Decorating a conservatory
B
uilding a conservatory is one of the most popular home improvements. But aside from the question of whether it will add value to your property, will it add value to your life? A good place to start is with the overall colour scheme. By painting the walls the same colour as the adjacent room, youll ensure that the conservatory really feels like part of your home, rather than a last-minute addition. Use the floor, too, as a bridge between the conservatory and the house. Tiled, slate, stone and terracotta floors are beautiful but tend to be rather cold and hard underfoot, so it would be a great idea to scatter one or two rugs to add instant warmth and character, perhaps in a colour used in the next room so as to create a visual link. With the background colours, textures and patterns established, its time to consider the key pieces of furniture probably a comfortable sofa and some armchairs, perhaps a dining table and chairs and soft furnishings. Many people choose rattan furniture for a conservatory, and it can look fabulous, adding a touch of exotic, Far Eastern style to the room. To emphasise this look, accessorise with wooden boxes with large brass handles (handy for coffee tables), woven baskets, carved-stone buddhas or elephants, paper lanterns and carved-wood mirrors. For blinds, cushions and throws, choose

fabrics in sand, mustard, deep red, orange and earthy brown. Alternatively, you could aim for a cool, New England look by teaming white-painted rattan with cottons and linens in plains and checks, tongue-and-groove cabinetry and simple floor and table lamps with pale fabric shades. Or go for a soft, English country look by adding chintzy cushions, painted ceramics, botanical prints, delicate chandeliers and vases of informally arranged flowers. Another favourite in a conservatory is metal furniture, though its best to avoid chairs and tables specifically designed for the garden, as they can look unsophisticated and clumsy; instead, opt for curly, decorative metalwork, which looks really pretty, especially painted in a soft pastel colour. Team with toile de Jouy fabrics, old metal caf signs, oversized chocolate mugs, painted wall clocks and enamelware with French lettering for a conservatory la Francais. For a more contemporary effect, faux wicker furniture (for both inside and out) now comes in all sorts of vivid colours and surprisingly sculptural shapes, while hightech fabrics, which resist staining and fading and are water-resistant, allow you to include upholstered furniture so you could go for long and lean sofas, or European-inspired, modular forms. The finishing touches for this look should be sleek, chic and minimal an

oversized floor lamp, perhaps; a piece or two in acrylic (maybe a curved coffee table or a dining chair), a modern chandelier and maybe some framed black-and-white photographs. And there you have it: glamorous or laid back, traditional or modern, the decoration of your conservatory can reflect your personal style and really make this room an integral part of your home.
which will control the heat in the summer and insulate in the winter. Choose from pleated, roller or roman blinds, vertical and Venetians, wood-weave or simple calico, in colours to suit your dcor.

1. Build an extension Pros Adding a rear extension to a kitchen can be a great way to create a multi-functional family room. Filling in the side return in a typical Victorian terrace is popular. It may be possible to add a second storey for a new bedroom or bathroom on the first floor, too. Cons Reduces garden size. Unsympathetic extensions feel like an add-on. 2. Convert the loft Pros Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden. Cons Not every loft has the headroom or enough useable space. More difficult and expensive if your roof isnt traditionally built. 3. Convert the cellar Pros Turn a cellar into family living space, a useful utility area, a home office or even a self-contained annexe, without altering the outside of your home. Cons Often more expensive, per square metre, than other ways of creating extra space. Can be difficult to get enough headroom and light into the new room. 4. Add a conservatory Pros Adds extra living space 50
and brings the garden into your home. Relatively inexpensive. Cons A poorly built conservatory can be too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter and full of condensation. Takes space from your garden. 5. Build a room in the garden Pros The building work will hardly bother you. Cons Not suitable for small gardens. Could look like a shed, security is an issue, and if not properly insulated it will be too cold to use in winter. 6. Divide a room into two Pros Carving up a large space to add another room is useful and can add value, even though youre not actually creating any extra space. Cons Youll need to create a separate doorway for the room, and include an opening window. 7. Put in an ensuite Pros Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space. Cons Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your propertys value. 8. Build on top of your garage Pros A first floor extension on top loses no garden space and is often relatively easy. Cons Foundations may not be strong enough, so the garage will have to be underpinned. 9. Convert your understairs
space Pros Turns a poorly used area into a valuable extra room perfect for a ground-floor loo, an extra shower room or a study area. Cons Youll have to find extra space to store that understairs stuff. If putting in a loo or bathroom, ventilation and connecting to drainage may be a problem. 10. Convert your garage Pros Its a relatively straightforward job to turn it into a valuable indoor space. Cons Foundations may need strengthening. Avoid if you live in an area where parking is at a premium. Remember, before starting any work, you must speak to the relevant authorities to find out if you need building regulations approval, planning permission or party wall consent from your neighbours. www.planningportal. gov.uk has more information.

ith summer already a distant memory, energy companies are rubbing their hands with glee. Cooler weather means bigger energy bills. Time to review a few energy saving devices then.
period of time. If you have an outdoor security light, consider swapping that too: while halogen security lights can use 400W or more, LED ones can be surprisingly bright with bulbs rated at just 10W.
You dont need to spend a fortune: some of the most effective changes are the simplest. For example, one of the best bill-busters is to replace existing bulbs with lowenergy ones. Halogen bulbs are better than incandescent ones, but LED bulbs are better still: for example in a typical 6-light kitchen spotlight, you can replace six 50W halogen bulbs with six 3W LEDs - so the total energy use would drop from 300W to just 18W. Look for warm white LEDs if you want a natural light: some LEDs have a bluish light, an effect not everybody likes. Note if you want dimmable lights youll need dimmable bulbs and LED-friendly dimmer switches. While the bulbs do cost more than traditional ones the price is coming down, and they last much, much longer than even halogens, so theyll pay for themselves quickly and save you money over a long 54
Turning things off can slash your energy usage too, and computers are particular offenders. Investing in the Ecobutton, which costs around 15, can pay for itself very quickly: press it when you take a break and itll put your PC into the most energy efficient standby mode. For TVs, a TV standby saver can put all your home entertainment kit to sleep when you put the TV into standby mode, and theres an equivalent for PCs. Expect to pay 21 for a TV standby saver and around 16 for a PC one. The Energy Saving Trust also recommends the WAHL Eco Kettle, which uses 60% less energy than a normal kettle - but dont spoil the savings by boiling more water than you actually need. Dont forget about batteries either: swapping from normal batteries to rechargeable ones can save you hundreds of pounds in a relatively short space of time: according to Which? magazine, you could
Cutting down your gas usage isnt quite as simple, but its still possible. Fitting a flow regulator such as the 5 Showersave to your shower slashes the amount of hot water your showers use, and the 25 Radiator BOOster can reduce the time it takes to heat a room, cutting energy usage in the process. Shower flow reducers can reduce your bills if youre on a water meter too, as can the Hippo water saver, which reduces the amount of water used to flush your toilet. For really big savings on gas, give some thought to a new boiler: by replacing a D-rated boiler with an A-rated one, you could save around 181 per year in a typical detached house. If thats a step too far, dont forget the obvious, affordable options: youll save a fortune by insulating your house if its current insulation isnt up to scratch and by turning the thermostat down a notch. Youll find that energy efficiency work is often subsidised by government grants, and you might even be able to have it done for free.
