WHY LEARN A LANGUAGE?

Demand for graduates with qualifications in languages is higher than ever in todays globalised economy. And in a job market which is particularly competitive, being able to communicate with speakers of other languages can give you a definite edge. The CBI claims that more than a third of British businesses hire people for their languages skills. You dont have to be a fluent linguist, but having the skill of being able to converse in a language other than your own is a real bonus. 74% of UK firms look for conversational language and intercultural competence skills rather than fluency (Worton 2009) Languages at the University of Lincoln are delivered by the highly experienced staff of Languages Centre, part of the Lincoln Business School. We offer French, German, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Our Languages Centre proves that language learning can be fun! We keep our classes smaller than in schools and you will have plenty of opportunity to practise, given the strong International focus of the Faculty. We also have self access resources in the library to help with your learning.

Our languages classes are OPEN TO ALL current students, members of the public and employees of the University.

THE CLASSES
Courses run for 12 weeks starting in September and January. Each weekly session lasts two hours. All courses carry University credits worth 15 CATs (Credit Accumulation Transfer points), and you also receive a Certificate of Achievement on successful completion. Our tutors are a mixture of native and fluent speakers, and class sizes are usually under 20 students. You will be assessed by our tutors to put you in a class that matches your level.

ABOUT THE LEVELS

These modules are designed for students who wish to learn a new language from scratch and be introduced to a new culture. You will develop the basic language skills needed to survive a trip abroad. (Mandarin Chinese is also available at post Beginners - between beginners and intermediate levels). CLASSES FOR INTERMEDIATE SPEAKERS Languages Available: French, German and Spanish These courses are designed for students who already have a GCSE or equivalent in the language but who wish to improve their level. There will also be the opportunity to learn more about the culture associated with the language you are learning.
