Communication
Our main form of communication is our agenda/planners. Teachers will continue to check these daily for notes to and from home. For this year the morning meeting themes will relate last years Habits of the Heart: Integrity, Empathy, Curiosity, Reflection, and SelfConfidence. We will also begin Habits of the Mind. Also, because we have signed onto the Healthy Schools Network, we will be discussing nutrition, goal-setting, vision, and achievement. As well, we continue to teach Rolla Traditional Values: Belonging, Independence, Mastery, and
Generosity.
Parent Volunteers
Our school appreciates the support of parent volunteers for many of the activities that we offer. We need volunteers to read with children, help with special events, make our hot lunch program so strong, and so many more projects. Criminal record checks must be on file at the office in order for anyone to volunteer in our building. Blank form attached to this newsletter to be dropped off at the RCMP office. An updated Drivers Abstract must be on file for any volunteer drivers. An updated copy of your drivers abstract can be picked up at your insurance agent or at the Provincial building. Kleenex Thanks to everyone who has sent in a box of Kleenex already. If students bring a box to their class teacher, she can bring them out and share them as one box runs out.
schools are discussed as well as provincial programs and information about school programs. Casual Fridays the PAC discussed how children might really appreciate having more days to wear casual clothing. We are going to try having Friday Casual and use it as a fundraising effort for various programs we participate in (Pennies for Patients which is supporting children with Leukemia and Lymphoma, the SPCA, general fundraising for our school events, etc.). - Fundraising Suggestions our parent group is looking for ideas to help our school in the ongoing effort to raise money. If you have an idea or have heard of something which might be fun, perhaps community-building, and helpful, please, come and share your ideas with our parent volunteers. It is believed that these efforts benefit all of our current and future students and help keep a school in Rolla. Potatoes! Red Merrick has donated fields of potatoes for us. I will be presenting some dates shortly. At the PAC meeting, it was suggested that we do two potato picking sessions one on a weekday and one on a weekend we will be trying to coordinate the best we can with Red and hopefully the weather holds for us.
PAC NEWS
Our first PAC meeting happened on Wednesday, September 4th. Many things were discussed. - District Parent Advisory Council: The PAC wants everyone to know that they are welcome to come to the district PAC meeting. Large topics important to many
The school district is completely supportive of the concept of a greener school yard area, but say that the current layout does not work for maintenance (mowing, etc). They are willing to help put in a more structured layout including raised beds, mulching, and landscaping and are wishing to incorporate our suggestions and input. That said, in the meantime they would like to clean up that area before winter (ie. ASAP). Therefore, they have asked for the trees and shrubs to be lifted and over-wintered elsewhere (Joanne has offered to over-winter them in her garden plot in town, and IJ and I have some large plastic pots that can be used to put them in temporarily). In the spring the school district will build a newly revised garden area into which the shrubs and trees can be transplanted. So, would anyone be available to lift those trees/shrubs out of the ground? It would be great to get a work-bee together for as soon as possible (perhaps this weekend?). Al and Stewart are eager for suggestions for a layout/design for the revised garden space. Please forward your suggestions to Joanne for this. IJ and I would also appreciate if the design could incorporate a berry/fruit tree section for the Rolla Community Garden :).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So the update is that we have a new retaining wall and soil. The school district will provide the new trees. We just need to do a little bit of weed removal (by hand no chemicals safety rules for school grounds) before they come with trees. Stay tuned! If youre interested in participating in this, please, let me know.
Student Leadership
Our Student Leadership group will be busy brainstorming some fun theme days and activities for us all to look forward to in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned for a letter from the older intermediates.
