INTRODUCTION
Sumitomo connected its business operations in the 16th century with copper melting. The opening of the Besshi copper mine in Shikoku Island was a landmark event and Sumitomo quickly became a leading copper producer. From the original copper business, various enterprises were born which comprised the Sumitomo Group of today. These include leading enterprises in Japan, such as the steel industry (in which Sumitomo Metals is engaged), the chemical, machinery, electric, engineering and other manufacturing industries as well as in the banking, insurance, trading and real estate industries. Sumitomo Metals embodies a traditional spirit by endeavoring to build a better society through its various activities. As a leading member of the Sumitomo Group, Sumitomo Metals employs 15,000 employees and has over 80 affiliated companies. Sumitomo Metals has gone through significant quantitative and qualitative changes over the past 30 years. In 1957, the company undertook a large scale modernization program centered mainly on the Wakayama Steel Works which developed from a maker of metal materials into an integrated steel maker. The company now ranks among worlds biggest steel manufacturers and steel pipe suppliers. Sumitomo Metals has six different steelworks whose individual characteristics give the company
its distinctive quality as a steelmaker. The three integrated steelmaking plants, Kashima Steel Works, Wakayama Steel Works and Kokura Steel Works, together possess 6 blast furnaces. In addition, Sumitomo Metals has Osaka Steel Works, the only works in Japan producing railroad wheels, and two specialized works, Steel Tube Works (in Amagasaki and in Kainan) for the production of the worlds leading high-grade steel pipe and tubes. Throughout the world, Sumitomo Metals markets a wide variety of high quality steel products pipe and tubes, plates, wire rods, bars, railroad rolling stock parts, forgings and castings, hot, cold, galvanized and electrogalvanized sheets and coils, to mention just a few. Sumitomo Metals is particularly well known for its steel pipe and tubes which have been supplied to various industries for more than seven decades. Wherever they are used, the Sumitomo brand on each length of the pipe or tube is synonymous with the highest attainable standards of quality and reliability. With users requirements becoming increasingly rigid, our broad experience, careful workmanship, advanced technology, and modern production equipment and facilities enable us to provide the appropriate product to meet any demand. This catalog is designed to acquaint you with the features of line pipe for various application.
Sumitomo Metals has almost all kinds of steel pipe manufacturing facilities which produce a wide range of seamless and welded steel pipe and tubes. The main facilities are composed of our Steel Tube Works (in Amagasaki and Kainan), Wakayama Steel Works, and Kashima Steel Works. These works are able to produce approximately three million metric tons of steel pipe and tubes annually. The company also possesses facilities in affiliated companies in Sakai, Kashima and Koga. Sumitomos facilities and locations are tabulated on next page together with their available size ranges (O.D.).

All materials and processes employed are monitored and controlled --- from steel melting, casting and the manufacture of the finished product. Each piece of pipes has its own production history, its own pedigree with advanced computer system.
Our special thermo-mechanical treatment (TMCP) results in fine grain size, high strength, high toughness, and excellent registance to hydrogen induced cracking in H2S environment. DAC (Dynamic Accelerated Cooling) is employed for such purposes.
High quality steel products start with proper, carefully controlled steel refining. This necessitates the use of basic oxygen furnaces and electric arc furnaces depending on the grades and quality levels of steel desired carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel. Sophisticated technologies such as vacuum degassing, special desulfurization, argon-oxygen decarburization, shielded bottom-pouring ingot-making, moldrotating ingot-making, and flow air ingot-making are typical elements in the manufacture of our higher quality products.
Sumitomo has always been progressive in the development and utilization of the most modern pipe making methods in the world. Its pipe mills are incessantly up-dated to take advantage of the latest in technology and equipment. This assures the constant availability of a broad size and grade range of tubular products produced as economically as possible. For welded pipes, an automatic welding control system has been newly developed, using computers to maintain optimum welding conditions, resulting in superior qualities of welds.

The quality of steel pipes is greatly influenced by the heat treatment method used. Only the most suitable heat treatment process is employed and carefully controlled to impart intended properties to the material. For ERW pipes, special heat treatment of weld seams is applied to control heat treatment temperatures and cooling rates for a finer and more uniform grain structure of welds.
Non-destructive inspections such as dimensional and hydrostatic, ultrasonic, eddy current, radiographic, or magnetic particle are conducted on all of our steel pipes depending on the customer and/or code specifications.
Quality Assurance
A wide range of sizes, 1/8--120 (3--3,000 mm) in outside diameter and 1--50 mm in wall thickness, is available from our various pipe manufacturing processes.
Every Sumitomos Pipe Mill has been registered as meeting ISO9001 requirement. Based on approved quality system, Sumitomo steel pipes enjoy a worldwide reputation for their high quality and reliability.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
1. Seamless Steel Pipe
Seamless steel pipe in sizes ranging from 1 to 16 3/4 inches (26 to 426 mm) in outer diameter is mass produced by the high toe angle piercing, fully retained bar mandrel mill method, the most advanced technology of its kind in the world. The hot line fully utilizes technologies that Sumitomo Metals has accumulated through many years of experience and basic research. These industryleading technologies, many of which we developed, include a process computer, a quality control system employing state-of-the-art inspection and measurement devices, and various advanced automation systems. In particular, medium-size seamless steel pipe from 5 1/2 to 16 3/4 inches in outer diameter is produced in an ultramodern facility that began operation in 1997. Most of billets are received directly from the round billet continuous casting facility and uniformly heated in a walking-beam type heating furnace, then a hole is opened in the center by the high toe angle piercer to form hollow pipe. The steel is next rolled to the specified thickness by the mandrel mill, then the pipe is rolled to the specified outer diameter by the extracting sizer. To further improve performance, the pipe is subjected to Sumitomo Metals unique in-line heat treatment and then undergoes exacting ultrasonic inspection. The result is seamless steel pipe of the highest quality and performance. The high toe angle piercer is a product of Sumitomo Metals intensive research and development. In 1983 we introduced a piercer for producing small-size pipe. Further technical refinements that reduce shearing stress and prevent abrasion of the pipes inner surface have enabled this method to be used for producing high-alloy steel pipe as well. The mandrel mill is equipped with the worlds most advanced fully retained bar system and a hydraulic AGC pipe wall thickness control system. Moreover, the extracting sizer features a length control system and an AGC outer diameter control system, enabling the production of sealmess steel pipe with superior dimensional precision. This process for producing high-quality seamless steel pipe, the most technologially advanced process of its kind in the world, is called the SMI-MAX Process". Small-size seamless steel pipe from 1 to 5 1/2 inches in outer diameter is produced on a state-of-the-art mill that began operation in 1983. The holes in the heated billets are made by a high toe-angle piercer developed by Sumitomo Metals, then the pipe wall is rolled to the specified thickness by a fully retained bar mandrel mill. After reheating the rolled base pipe in a reheating furnace, it is rolled to the specified outer diameter by a stretch reducer. High alloy steel (such as stainless steel) tubes are produced by an extrusion process which uses glass powder for lubrication. Large diameter pipes with heavy walls are made using the forging process with a horizontal hydraulic press. When required, tubes made by these mills are cold-worked by a draw bench or a cold reducing machine in order to give them higher dimensional accuracy and smoother surface finish.
