BeforecommencingthisSectionitisjustaswelltogo throughSection3onceagain,oratleasttohaveitbyyoutorefer totheillustrationsofeachLockasitismentioned.ThisSection willtherebybemucheasiertolearn. Havingthrownyourantagonist,orratherintheactof throwinghim,thebestmanoeuvreinmostcasesistoobtainthe StraightArmLockbetweenThighsfromStandingPosition.With practiseitispossibletojumpintothisLock,therebydoingitso quicklythatyourlegisacrossyouropponentsthroat,andhisarmis trappedsimultaneouslywithhisreachingthegroundfromyourThrow. ItiswellworththewhilepractisingagainandagainuntiltheLockand theThrowbecomeonelightninglikemovement. IfyouarenotexpertenoughatgettingthisLock,orifthe Throwhasnotcomeoffquiteasyouintended,thenextbestthingto doistotakeupinstantlyoneoftheStandardPositions.Drop straightawayintoAstrideorSittingorKneelingPosition.

The Astride Position.


Oneofthemostconvenientwaysofthrowingyourmanand gettingintoAstrideisbygivinghimaHalfAnkleRoll.Ifyou intendthrowinghimtotheright,griphissleeveinyourrighthand andhislapelinyourleft,pullhimwelltotherightasyougivehim theAnkleRoll,andholdontohisleftlapelsothathebringsyou naturallywithhisimpetusintoAstride. AsyouswingintoAstrideyourfirstact,ofcourse,isto slideyourrighthandalonghisrightcollarasastartfortheNeck Lock.Ifyouropponentdoesnotpreventyou,instantlyfollowup withyourlefthandandcompletetheNeckLock. AssoonasyouarriveinAstrideyouropponentissuretodo somethingtopreventyourgettingtheNeckLock. Wewillnowdealwitheverypossiblemovementofyour opponentanddescribewhatyoushoulddoineachcase.

2 1.IfhepreventsyougettinginyourlefthandfortheNeck Lockbyputtinghislefthanduptohisface,youmayeither, (a)grasptheinsideofhisleftsleevewithyourlefthand, andswingintotheStraightArmLockbetweenThighsonhisleftarm,or (b)retainingyourrighthandgrip,leandownclosetohis face,graspthebackofhiscollarandfromtheRIGHTsideofhisfacewith yourlefthand,thensuddenlyswivelyourleftforearmunderandround hishead,therebybringingittotheLEFTsideofhisneckand completingtheNeckLock.Theonlydifferencebetweenthisandthe orthodoxNeckLockisthatthelittlefingerside,insteadofthethumb side,ofyourlefthandpressesagainsthisneck.TheLockisallthe moreeffectiveforthat,however. 2.Ifhetriestopushawayyourhead,chinorcheek,or gripyourhair,lapelorsleeve,withhisrighthand,then (a)grasphiswristwithyourlefthandandhissleevewith yourrighthandandswingintoStraightArmLockbetweenThighs,or (b)grasphiswristwithbothhandsandswingoveryourleft legintotheLegAcrossNeckStraightArmLock Ifhepusheswithlefthand,andsameLocksapplyvice versa. 3.Ifhetriestopullyoudowntohimwithhishandagainst thebackofyourneck,either (a)usetheStraightArmLockbetweenThighs,or (b)givetohimalittleandplaceyourarmoverhis sothatthecrookofyourelbowgraspshisupper arm,thenstraightenhisarmbypressingoutwards andbackwardswithyourneckandinwardswithyour arm.usetheotherhandtoassist,ifneedbe. ThisistheOverArmStraightArmLock(Fig.1). 4.Ifhetriestohugyouroundthewaist,applytheUnderarm StraightArmLock.ThisissimilartoFig.1,exceptthathisforearm isheldunderyourarmpitinsteadofbeingoveryourshoulder.Youhold hisupperarminthecrookofyourelbowandpressinwardswiththe assistanceofyourotherhandorgraspinghisjacketandstraightening yourarm. 5.Ifhetriestojabyourthighwithhiselbowyoucan usuallygetaBentArmLock. 6.Ifhegripsorpushesagainstyourthigh,kneeorleg,pin downhiswrist,jumpawayintoKneelingPosition,andapplytheTrussed ArmLock.

3 7.Ifhetriestojabyourbackwithhisknees,ortriesto buntyouuporforwardorpushesyoubackwardsagainstyourhipswhilst buntingyou,applytheSplits. 8.Ifbybuntingyouandpushingyoubodilybackwardshe managespartlytoescapefromyourAstridebygettingalegoutunder yourknee,rollbackinstantly,griptheescapedlegwithyourthighs andapplyaCalfMuscleLock. 9.IfhegetsaNeckLockonyou,unwinditbyjumpinginto theHeadwaysPosition.Whetheryoujumptotherightortotheleft dependsonwhichhandhehasuppermost. 10.Ifwhileyouareleaningdowntohimheputsyourneckin chancerywiththeideaofgettingaNeckLock,either (a)jumpintoKneelingPositionorintoHeadwaysPosition,if necessary,therebyunwindingthehold,or (b)jumpintoSittingPositionandapplythe"V"NeckLock. IfhisleftarmisroundyournecktaketheSittingPositiononhisleft, ifhisrightarm,jumpintoSittingPositiononhisleft,ifhisright arm,jumpintoSittingPositiononhisright. 11.Ifheturnssidewayswiththeideaoftwistingoutofyour Astridehelayshimselfopenaccordingtothe positionofhisarmstoeitherStraightArmLock betweenThighs,orlegacrossNeckStraightArm Lock,orReversedTrussedArmLock.Todothis TrussedArmLockassuminghehasturnedhisright sidetowardsyou,grasphisleftwristwithyour lefthand,and,insertingyourrightarmunderhis armpitandoverhisforearmgraspyourownleftwrist,orviceversa Fig.2. YoualsocanusuallygetaNeckLock,eitherfromfrontor behind 12.IfhetriestorollyouoverbodilySidewaysyoucan usuallypreventhimdoingsobygrippinghimwithyourkneesandkeeping controlofyourweight"riding"himsotospeak.Ifhemanagesto rollyouoveryoumayeither (a)continuetherollintoBetweenLegsPosition,or (b)rollhalfwayandapplytheUnderarmStraightLockin doingso.Thisisusuallypossible,becausetorollyouoverhehasto gripyourarmataboutyourshoulder.

4 ThereisaForearmNeckLockwhichcansometimesbeapplied fromastride.HavinginsertedyourrighthandfortheorthodoxNeck Lock,failinggettingyourleftintoposition,yousimplybringyour rightforearmdownhardacrossyouropponent'sAdam'sapple.Tomake theLockreallyeffectiveitisnecessarytopreventhimfromtwisting bypinningdownhisrightarmwithyourleft. Wehavenowfairlywellexhaustedthepossibilitiesofwhat youropponentcando,exceptthathemightperhapstrytopunchyouor wrigglefuriously.Youcanpreventbothbyleaningwelldowntohim, Thisholdshimdowneffectively.

13.IfyoumisstheOverarmorUnderarmStraightArmLock,or theBentArmLock,instantlyreplaceyourrighthandfortheNeckLock. 14.IfyoumisstheSplitsortheCalfMuscleLegLock,regain yourproperAstridePositionatonce. 15.IfyoumisstheStraightArmLock betweenThighsortheLegAcrossNeckStraightArm Lock,insertyourforearmbehindyouropponent's neckandgrasptheshinofthelegwhichisacross histhroat.Straightenyourlegandarmandyou havetheLegandArmLock,Fig.3. 16.Failingthat,inthecaseoftheLegAcrossNeckStraight ArmLockregainyourastrideatonce,andinthecaseoftheStraight ArmLockbetweenThighs,twist,facingyouropponent,intoHeadways position,orpullhimtoyouintoBetweenLegsPosition.

TheSittingPosition.
Afteryouhavethrownyouropponentyoumayfinditmore convenienttotakeuptheSittingPosition,andwewillassumethat youaresittingonyouropponent'sleftsidewithyourleftarmround hisneck.Youshould,ifbyanymeanspossible,makesureofhaving youropponent'sleftupperarmacrossyourleftthigh,readyto straightenitoutintotheHeelandThighStraightArmLock. (1)Ifheresistsbykeepinghisarmstronglybent,insert

5 yourrightarmthroughthecrookofhiselbowandwithyourhandonyour leftkneeforleverage,pressoutwardsagainsthisforearmwiththe sharpedgeoftheboneofyourforearm.This,beingpainful,willmake himreleasehisresistancesufficientlytoenableyoutostraightenhis armfurtherbymeansofyourrightleg.Whenhisarmisfully straightenedout,hiswristwillbejustintherightposition underneaththeinsideofyourrightknee,andyouproceedtoliftyour leftheelontoyourrightkneetohelpyoupressdownhiswristwith yourrightkneeandpressupwardshisupperarmwithyourleftthigh. (2)Ifyoufailtogethisleftupperarmacrossyourleft thighorifheslipsitoffbypullinghiselbowcloseintohisbody, unless,youcangeta"V"NeckLock,itissafertojumporturnatonce intosomeotherStandardPosition,becausethewithdrawnarmusually meansthatyouropponentiseithergoingtohaulyouoverhisbodyor twistawayfromyourgriproundhisneck. (3)Ifyouropponenthugsyouroundthewaistwithhisarms forthepurposeofhaulingyouover,holdontohisleftarmwithyour right,andanticipatehismovebyjumpingintoAstride.Thisbrings youintotherightpositiontoapplytheUnderarmStraightArmLockon hisleftarm. (4)Ifhehugsyouroundtheneckwithhisleftarm,jumpinto AstrideinasimilarmannerandapplytheOverarmStraightArmLock. (5)Ifhepushesagainstyourchinwithhisleftarm,either (a)pushitawaytoyourleftbystrikinghiselbowwiththepalmof yourrighthand,bringdownyourheadagainsthisheadandapply the"V"NeckLock,or (b)presshisarmdowntillyoucangrasphiswristinyourlefthand andapplytheBentArmLock. (6)Ifhegripsyoubythehairwithhisrighthand,or pressesbackwardsagainstyourchinwithhisrightforearm,orotherwise triestopullyoubackwards,either (a)grasphisrightupperarminthecrookofyourleftarm,turnand riseintoKneelingPositionandapplytheUnderarmStraightArm Lock,or (b)jumpintoAstrideorHeadwaysPositionandapplytheStraightArm LockbetweenThighsonhisrightarm. (7)Ifhebringsuphisfeetbehindyou,grasphimthroughthe crookofoneofhiskneeswithyourrightarmandapplytheCradle.

(8)Ifyouropponentmanagestotwistawayoutofyourgrasp youmustriseandturneither, (a)withKneelingPositionandapplytheSideNeckLockasdescribed inKneelingPositionparagraph3,or (b)intoHeadwaysPositionandapplytheNeckLockfromFront. (9)Ifyouropponentmanagestohaulyouoverhisbodyyou mustswivelroundandbringyourlegsintoplayasdescribedinthe BetweenLegsPositionparagraph1.

TheKneelingPosition.
WewillassumethatyouhavegainedtheKneelingPositionon youropponentandyouarelyingcrosswiseacrosshischestwithyour kneesathisleftside. 1.Ifyouropponentexposeshisrightarm,youofcoursetake theopportunityofimmediatelygettingoniteitheraBentArmLock,a TrussedArmLockoraStraightArmLock. 2.Ifyouropponentturnsawayfromyou,soastobringhis backtowardsyourknees,youmayeither, (a)turnintotheSittingPositionandapplythe"V"NeckLock,or (b)placeyourrightarmroundhisneckandgrasphisleftlapel, atthesametimebringingyourleftforearmacrosstheleftside ofhisneck.Inthiswayyouhavehisneckbetweenthecrook ofyourrightarmandthesharpouteredgeofyourleftforearm, andyouproceedtoexertpressurewithyour rightarmwiththeassistanceofhisleftlapel andwithyourleftforearm,byrestingyour lefthandonyourrightupperarmforleverage inpressingagainsthisneck.Seefig.4. ThisistheFoldedArmsNeckLock.Ifheturnsfarenoughapply theNeckLockfromBehind,or (c)ifhisarmisintherightpositionyoumayapplytheTrussed ArmLockasdescribedinparagraph11intheAstridePosition. 3.Ifheturnstowardsyouplaceyourrightarmroundthe backofhisnecksothatyourrightforearmpressestheleftsideof hisneck.Graspyourrightfistinyourleft handtopullupwardsandpresshisheadsideways anddownwardstoyourrightwithyourright upperarm.Youmayhavetobringupyourleft

7 kneeacrosshisrighthipinordertopreventhimfromrising.This istheSideNeckLock,Fig.5. 4.Ifheputshisleftarmroundyourwaistwiththeobject ofheavingyouoff,youmayapplyeithertheUnderarmStraightArm LockortheStraightArmLockBetweenThighs. 5.Ifhehugsyouroundtheneckwithhisrightarmroundthe leftsideofyourneck,jumpintotheAstridePositionandapplythe UnderarmStraightArmLock,ortheStraightArmLockBetweenThighs. 6.Ifhehugsyouwithhisrightarmroundtherightsideof yourneck,thatistosay,withyourheadinchancer,youmayeither, (a)jumpacrossintotheSittingPositiononhisrightsideand applythe"V"NeckLock,or (b)placeyourrightarmroundhisshoulderand straightenuppullinghimtowardsyouinto theShoulderLock,Fig.6,or (c)jumpintoHeadwaysPosition,turnyour opponentsidewaysandapplytheNeck Squeeze. 7.Ifhebringsuphisfeetwiththeobjectofbuntingyou, orheavingyouoff,youmaybeabletograsphisrightfootwithyour lefthandsothatthelittlefingersideofyour wristpressesagainsttheoutsideofhisankle. Nowbypressingyourelbowagainsthisthigh,so astopullhisfootoutwards,youwillbeable togettheLegTwistLock,Fig.7. Itispossibletogetasimilarlockonhisleftleg,butin thiscaseyoutakehisankleinthecrookofyourleftarmandapply leveragebyrestingyourhandonhisthigh,sothatyoutwisthisleg outwards.Inordertopreventhimturningawayfromyouitis advisabletoapplyatthesametimetheForearmNeckLock,withyour righthandgraspinghisrightcollar. 8.Ifyouropponentsimplyliesflatwithhisarmscrossedon hischest,thusprotectinghisneckandkeepinghisarmsunexposed,you mayeither, (a)turnintoHeadwaysPositionandapplytheNeckSqueeze,or (b)jumpintoAstride,rollhimoverandapply theKidneySqueeze,or (c)placeyourrightarmunderhisheadso thatthebackofhisheadrestsinthe crookofyourelbowandgrasphiscoatat

8 hisrightshoulder.Straightenyourrightarm,whilstatthesametime holdingdownhisrightshoulder,Fig.8.ThisistheForwardHeadLock. (TheForwardHeadLockmayalsobeappliedfromtheAstrideby interlacingyourhandsbehindyouropponent'shead,restingyourelbows closetogetheronhischestandpullingupwardstowardsyou). 9.Ifheputshisleftarmbetweenyourlegs,instantlyturneither intoSittingPositionorintotheSidelongLyingPositionandapplythe HeelandThighStraightArmLock.

FurtherHints.
10.IfyouropponentrenderstheShoulderLockortheOverarmStraight ArmLockineffectivebyholdingyoutootightlyroundtheneck,change intoHeadwaysPositionandapplytheNeckSqueezeorStraightArmLock BetweenThighs. 11.Ifyouropponentmanagestopushyouover,pushyouaway,orheave youover,swivelroundinstantlyandgetyourkneeinbetweenyouandhim asdescribedinparagraph1oftheBetweenLegsPosition.

TheHeadwaysPosition.
1.TheHeadwaysPositionisparticularlyusefulinviewofthefact thatfromittheStraightArmLockBetweenThighscanbedoneoneither ofyouropponent'sarmswithease.Ifheexposesanarmatall,either forthepurposeofgraspingyouroundthebodyorneck,simplyrollback intotheStraightArmLockBetweenThighs. 2.ItisalsopossibletoapplyeithertheUnderarm,orOverarm StraightArmLockifyouropponentexposesanarmatall. 3.Ifyouropponentrefusestoexposeanarmyoumayapplyeitherthe NeckSqueezeortheFoldedArmsNeckLock. 4.Ifyouropponentturnsroundwiththeintentionofgettingon "allfours",lethimdoso,andapplytheNeckLockfromFront. 5.Ifheswivelsroundsidewayswiththeideaofgettinghisfeet towardsyoulethimcome,butbecarefultoobtaintheKneelingPosition beforehecompleteshisswivel.

9 6.Ifhebringsuphisfeetwiththeobjectofjabbingyourhead withhisknee,orcatchingyourheadbetweenhisknees,bringdownyour headclosetohisbodysothatthepointofyourchinpressesagainst hissolarplexus.

TheSidelongLyingandSidelongSittingPositions.
Thereishardlyanynecessitytodescribethemanoeuvresinthese twopositionsindetail,astheyareverysimilartothosealready describedintheSittingPositionandKneelingPosition.Forexample, ifyouropponentresistsinHeelandThighStraightArmLockfrom SidelongLyingPositiontacticssimilartothosedescribedinthe SittingPosition,paragraph1.

TheBetweenLegsPosition.
TheBetweenLegsPositionisonethatmaybeusefullyemployedin manycircumstances.Forexample,ifyouhappentobethrownandyour opponentisabouttodroponyouinaStandardPosition,youshould instantlybringuponeorbothkneesbetweenyourselfandyour opponent,theobjectbeingeventuallytogetthebetweenLegsPosition onyouropponent.Assumingthatyouropponentafterthrowingyouis abouttodropintoKneelingPositiononyourfromtheleftside;ashe isdroppingraiseyourleftkneesothatyourshinislyingacrossthe frontofhips,andgrasphimroundthebackwithyourrightleg.If hemakeseffortstotwistroundtothelefttoescapefromyourlegs, holdhiminpositionbypressingagainsthisrighthipwithyourleft hand.YouarenowhalfwaytotheproperBetweenLegsPositionand youropponentissuretogiveyouanopportunityofbringingyourleft legrightthroughtohisrightsidewiththepossibilityofgetting theKidneySqueeze.Thismethodofworkinginthekneebetweenyou andyouropponentasapreliminarytogettingBetweenLegsPosition isalsousefulifyouropponenthappenstogetaKnellingPosition,or aHeadwaysPositiononyou.Inbothcasesswingyoulegsfirstinthe oppositedirection,then,likeaflash,swingthereversewayand insertyourkneeinthecrookofhiships. HavingobtainedtheBetweenLegsPosition, 1.Ifyouropponent,nowkneelingbetweenyourlegs,comesforward fromaboveyou,orifyoucanpullhimforward,immediatelyapplythe KidneySqueeze.

10 2.IfyoufailtogettheKidneySqueeze,donotwasteyourstrength intryingtoexertpressureineffectively,butdropyourfeetinside hislegsandapplytheUpperSplits.TheUpperSplitsisexactlythe sameastheordinarySplits,exceptthatyourpositionisunderneath youropponentinsteadofbeingabovehim. 3.Ifyouropponent,whileyouareapplyingtheKidneySqueeze,turns overonhisside,thisshouldgiveyouastillbetteropportunityof successfullyapplyingthislock,butyoumayalternativelyifyouwish simplyholdhimwithyourlegsroundhisbody,whileyouareapplying theusualCrossCollarNeckLockortheUnderarmorOverarmStraight ArmLock. 4.Ifyouropponentistoofarawayfromyoutoholdhimeffectively intheKidneySqueezePosition,getyourfeetinthecrookofhiships, andholdeitherhissleeve,orpreferablyhisrightcollarwithyour righthand,preparatorytogettingtheCrossCollarNeckLock.Itis importanttoholdhiminthisway,otherwiseifherisestohisfeethe escapes. 5.IfyouropponentrisestohisfeetwhileyouareinaFeetinHips Positionyoumayeither, (a)givehimaStomachThrowwithbothyourfeetandsomersault withhimintoAstridePosition,or (b)pushawayoneofhiskneeswithonefoot,atthesametime pushingupagainsthishipwittheotherfootandthustwisthimover sideways,followingupyourselfintoAstridePosition.Thisisthe KneeRollanditmaybemadeanexceedinglyeffectivethrow. 6.IfherisestohisfeetwhileyouareholdinghimintheKidney SqueezePosition,immediatelychangeintoFeetandHipsPosition otherwisehecanliftyouupandbumpyouagainsttheground. 7.IfwhileyouropponentisintheBetweenLegsPosition,hecatches holdofyourlegandjumpstohisfeetwiththeobjectofgettinga CalfMuscleLegLockonyou,simplyrisewithhimuntilyouare standing,sotospeak,onthebackofyourneck.Inthisposition catchholdofhislegswithbothhandsandpullthemtowardsyou,and withtheimpetusofhisbackwardfallyoushouldjumpforwardinto AstridePosition. 8.Itisofcourseobviousthatifyouropponentrollsyouoverfrom AstridePositionhecomesnaturallyintotheBetweenLegsPosition. Ifwhileheisbetweenyourlegsyouwishtoturnhimover,backagain

11 intoAstride,insertonefootinhishipandpushawayhisoppositeknee withyourotherfoot.Alternativelyyoumay,insteadofpushingaway hisknee,insertyourfootinsidethecrookofhislegasifforSplits, andtwisthimoverbypushingagainsthisoppositehipwithyourother foot. 9.Ifwhileyouropponentiskneelingbetweenyourlegs,heputsout andarmtotrytogetaNeckLockonyou,immediatelygrasphiswrist, bringyourlegover,andapplytheLegAcrossNeckStraightArmLock. Itmaynotbenecessarytobringyourlegrightacrosshisneck,simple pressurewithyourkneeagainsthiselbowwhileyouarepressingback hiswristmaybesufficienttomakehimtap.TheUnderarmandOverarm StraightArmLocksareofcourseapplicablefromBetweenLegsPosition equallyasfromAstride. 10.IfwhileyouropponentisinBetweenLegsPositionheattemptsto getonyouaStraightArmLockorBentArmLockitisaneasymatter toKeephimoffwithyourfeet,orbetterstilltoapplytheKidney SqueezeorUpperSplits. 11.Ifhetriestoputyourheadinchanceryyoumayeither, (a)applytheKidneySqueezeorUpperSplits,or (b)rolloverintoAstrideandthenturnintoKneelingPositionto unwindthehold. 12.Ifyouropponenttriestopushawayyourlegswithhiselbows, bringupyourlegs,griphimroundtheneckwithyourknees,andapply theNeckSqueeze. 13.Ifhemanagestopindownoneofyourlegswiththeobjectof comingforwardontopofyou,immediatelybringthetrappedlegbetween hislegsandapplytheAnkleSplits,Fig.9.Wheneveryouropponent happenstohaveoneofhislegsbetweenyourswhilstyouareonyour back,thislockshouldbeappliedasfollows: Crossbothyourlegsabovethecalfofhistrappedlegsoasto preventhimescapingfromtheposition.Keep,sayyourleftleg, acrosshiscalf,catchhisanklewithyourright footsoastoholdhisfootfirmlywhileyou insertyourleftfootalsounderhisankleor underyourown,andstraightenbothlegs. 14.IfwhileyouareinaKidneySqueezePositionyouropponent managestoliftoneofyourlegsoverhisheadwiththeintentionof escaping,orofdroppingacrossyouintotheKneelingPosition immediatelyswivelawayfromhimandreinsertyourlegbybringingyour

12 kneeintothecrookofhiships.

FurtherHints.
15.IfyoumisstheLegAcrossNeckStraightArmLockthroughnot gettingyouropponent'selbowfarenoughforward,youmay,ifyouare quick,obtainaStraightArmLockontheotherarm,asusuallythisarm isinaparallelposition. Alternativelyputyourarmroundhisneckandgraspyourshin thusapplyingtheLegandArmNeckLock. 16.IfyouropponentmanagestoescapefromtheNeckSqueeze describedinparagraph12above,swivelawayandreinsertyourknee preparatorytoobtainingtheBetweenLegsPositiononceagain.

StandingPosition.

TheaboveisafairlyexhaustivedescriptionoftheLockswhich canbegenerallyobtainedinGroundManoeuvresbythemajorityof Jujitsuans.Therearesuretobe,however,manylittledeviceswhich willparticularlysuityourownphysique,andthisyouwillfindoutby practice,andwhichyoucanmakeyourownspecialty.Themoreyou practicethemorethingsyouwilldiscover,andyourpracticeshould consistofexperimentsaswellasoffiveminutesandtenminutes contests.
