The recovery has been excellent

From page 1
She is just a precious little girl, her aunt Kim Woyach told the Express News. Shes such a trooper. She has this tiny little voice, but such a huge personality. Shes always smiling and playing even after all shes been through. you have to do.

Kennedy Kiefer

A devastating diagnosis... Kennedy was just eight months old when she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor on her right kidney, and the girls parents received the news every parent prays they will never have to hear. Your child has cancer, recalled Eric, Kennedys father, in an interview with the Express News. Its every parents worst nightmare. It was a heartbreaking time, said Eric, but following the removal of the kidney, 19 weeks of chemotherapy and a second surgery for a bowel obstruction, the family thought they had woken from a bad dream and could move on with the rest of their lives. We thought everything was okay and that she was just fine, said Eric. However, this past January, Kennedys blood work showed complications with her remaining kidney and a biopsy revealed that her WT1 gene, which prevents tumors, had mutated during development in the womb, causing an extremely rare medical conditionDenys-Drash Syndromeof which there are just 200 diagnosed cases in the world. The sobering fact is that children with this syndrome suffer complete kidney failure by age 3, develop Wilms tumors and face many related complications, so the race was on to get a new kidney into Kennedys little body. It was a hard-hitting blow, said Eric, but the familywhich also includes their 6-yearold son Lukasgathered its strength and forged ahead. Once you come to grips with what you have to do, you can deal with things, he said. There have been many ups and downs, just like a rollercoaster ride, but you just do what

Light at the end of the tunnel... Good eventually did come for the family as Jennifer, who was determined to be the best match for her daughter, was able to donate a kidney to Kennedy, but the period from January to July was touch and go as potential donors were ruled out, said Eric. Naturally we thought with our big family surely one of us would qualify as a donor, but as one after the other of our family members were disqualified, we were terrified of Kennedy having to go on the donor list, because that would mean months, if not years, of dialysis, not to mention her not having the best match possible which could lead to rejection, he explained. Thankfully, Jennifer was a viable matchWe celebrated that day like no other, Eric said. With the transplant completed, the healing has begun. The recovery has been excellent for both Kennedy and Jen, Eric said. Medically

everything looks great and according to doctors they are both exceeding expectations. Jennifer was discharged after a few days and Kennedy after two weeksa time during which her dad never left her side and her mother visited her at Childrens Hospital every

...We appreciate all the help we get

From page 3
day. I slept in a recliner next to her bed and it was such a privilege to do that, Eric said. Often Kennedy would wake up in pain and need comforting and I was able to be there. It was an amazing time, and I cant say enough about Childrens Hospital and the miracle workers they have there. With mother and daughter home and recuperating, the family is beyond grateful. Were very blessed and now were recovering as a family, Eric said. The key, he said, is making sure Kennedy takes her anti-rejection medicationcurrently 10 different kinds at 12-hour intervalsand drinks enough water. Thats probably the biggest challenge, explaining to a child, If you dont take this medication, youre not going to make it, Eric said. Otherwise, it is back to life as usual at the Kiefer household, said Eric, as Kennedy delights in being reunited with her brother after a too-long hospital stay. How do you deal with the separation of siblings? Eric asked. Lukas understands that Kennedys kidney was broken, but he really missed her while she was gone. When he first visited her in the hospital, both of their faces just lit up. Theyre best friends. Eric said Lukas is thrilled to have his sister back, and the siblings are already joined at the hip again, watching movies together in a chair, and looking forward to T-Ball and bikeriding. Kennedy loves Barbies and dolls, but as a little sister she always wants to do what Lukas is doing, Eric said with a laugh. We have a lot of expenses right now and insurance does not cover everything, plus Kennedy will need medications that can be up to $900 per month out of pocket, said Eric. That is a tremendous financial burden, not just now when she is living with us, but for her when she is on her own. The family has teamed up with Childrens Organ Transplant Organization (COTA), a national non-profit that helps families navigate the challenges associated with an organ transplant, and several fundraisers in honor of Kennedyincluding a rummage sale/brat fry, a car show, a poker run and a bowling nightare already organized and scheduled. We appreciate all the help we get, Eric said. These volunteers have been outstanding. And through it all, the Kiefers manage to see the silver lining around the many dark clouds that have crossed their horizon. As terrible as this has been, our family and friends rallied to us to provide a support network that helped us through every difficult moment, Eric said. We are so incredibly lucky to have the family and friends we do, because everyone goes through tough times, but not everyone has a shoulder to cry on, an ear to bend, arms to embrace or just (the knowledge that) youre not alone. For more information or to donate to COTA in honor of Kennedy, visit www.cotaforKennedyK.com, and follow the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CaringForKennedy.

Moving forward... The family is taking it one day at a time, Eric shared, noting that after her recovery, Kennedy will be able to live a normal life and do just about anything she wants with the exception of direct contact sports. Kennedy has been exposed to the medical side of thisdoctors and nurses and check upsher whole life, so she understands that part, he said. Now she just needs to be aware that she has a kidney in the front part of her body and that she needs to guard it.

The struggles that lie ahead... Hoping the worst is behind them, the Kiefers still face the very harsh reality of a lifetime of medical bills and a whole laundry list of challenges that come with the territory of having an organ transplant. Although Eric, a salesman with EMS Medical Billing in Milwaukee, and Jennifer, who works at the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, were fortunate enough to have understanding employers through their time of need, the bills not only remain, but will keep coming in. Also, Kennedy will need to take several costly medications for the rest of her life as well as undergo another kidney transplant in about 20 years.

The 3-months in the 2nd quarter finished 8.6% ahead of the same time in 2012. New Berlin West rally too much for Spartans in state summer baseball title game
West Bend West turned back one comeback bid at the state summer baseball tournament April 19, but couldnt answer another one later that day. West held on to beat Sheboygan Falls in a semifinal 8-7 but then fell to New Berlin West 11-6 in the championship game a few hours later. Against Sheboygan Falls, West Bend West scored in four of six innings. The Spartans scored three runs in the second, two runs in the third and fourth innings and one run in the fifth inning. Trailing 8-1 in the sixth inning, Sheboygan Falls scored five runs off of five hits to reduce the lead to 8-6. After holding West scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning, Sheboygan Falls Josh Rostek hit the ball into centerfield, allowing Eric Klemme to score from second base. But West closed the game as Kyle Krier fielded a grounder at third base and threw to first base for the final out. In the title game West Bend West scored three runs each in the third and fifth innings. West Bend West didnt get on the board until the bottom of the fourth inning, as a bases loaded walk allowed Matt Rychtik to score from third. West Bend West then mounted a comeback in the sixth inning. A single by A.J. Emerich allowed Alec Miller to score from second base while Krier advanced from first to second base. A short time later, Jacob Kopp hit a double into right field, driving in three runs. Nicholas Wolf then hit a single into left field and a throwing error allowed Kopp to score to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning but New Berlin West scored five runs in the eighth inning to win the state summer baseball title. I was very proud of them all season long, West Bend West Coach Bill Albrecht said after the championship game, relaying what he told the team after the loss to New Berlin West. As a team and as our senior class we werent picked to be doing much of anything this year and we played extra innings to (compete for) a state championship. Albrecht added the preseason expectations gave his team the incentive to defy the projections. We werent the most talented team, we just had six hits in eight innings (referring to the title game) but we found a way to come back. It was right there for us, Albrecht said. He then added: Our seniors kept West baseball where it West Bend Wests Matt Rychtik scores against New Berlin West in WIAA summer baseball title should be, thats what Ill take out of it. By Thomas J. Options to consider when restoring shutters

By Tresa Erickson Youve been working on the outside of your home for months now. You removed the dead trees. You had the lawn treated. You redesigned the flowerbeds. You stained the driveway. You painted the house. You had new windows installed. The result? The curb appeal of your home has improved considerably. Now you just need to add some final touches, starting with new shutters. Your shutters have taken a beating over the years, and now its time you replaced them. Before you start the shopping, you need to determine the style of shutters you want. Perhaps you want what you had before. Perhaps you want something new. Shutters come in four basic styles: louvered, raised panel, board and batten, and Bahama. Louvered are the most common, and their traditional look suits most home styles. Raised panel shutters also feature a traditional look and work well on homes with paneled doors. Board and batten shutters are simple in designa few vertical slats held together by a horizontal board on the top and bottomand suit most rustic, country homes. Bahama, or hurricane, shutters serve both form and function, adding a touch of style while protecting the windows of homes in areas prone to hurricane weather. They cover the entire window and open like an awning. Shutters come in a variety of materials. PVC is popular with homeowners because it requires very little maintenance. It does fade, crack, dent and bend, however. Wood is another popular choice, and there are several types of wood suitable for shutters. Some of these include pine, cedar, cypress and redwood. Wood does require some maintenance, in particular primer, paint and sealer. If you plan to use Bahama shutters, you will also have to select hardware. A number of styles are available for shutter dogs, hinges, tie-backs and holdbacks, locks and caps. Hand-forged are the best. Once you have an idea of the shutters you want, you will need to take accurate measurements. Measure your old shutters and have the figures with you when you go shopping. Homeowners who do not have shutters might want to have a professional come out to their home and take accurate measurements. For the best results, you should shop for shutters locally or online with a reputable vendor. Ask questions, know what you are purchasing and make sure you are able to handle the installation yourself. If not, hire someone reputable. You dont want to spend a lot on new shutters only to damage them during the installation process! Protect your investment with smart choices from beginning to end.
