Preoperative Care 1. Prior to scheduled surgery, the nurse should evaluate, by physiological and discursive means, the level of and changes in patients anxiety about hospitalization and surgery. 2. Procedures should be thoroughly explained to the patient upon admission and prior to the surgery. 3. Patient would be informed promptly when the time for surgery has been scheduled. Exceptions are only applicable to instances that may be detrimental to the patients general health. 4. In every instance the nature of the operation and the reasons for its being performed should be explained to the patient in terms he is capable of understanding. The patient or his family should not be guaranteed the successful outcome of surgery. 5. Explanation of post-operative pain and other discomforts. 6. Prepare patient for postoperative parenteral alimentation, drainage tubes, dressings, respiratory activity, range of mobility, and time of ambulation. 7. Consent should have been obtained which is ensuring patients understand the procedure and that they are happy to go ahead with it. 8. When patients are to be moved to a different bed after surgery, all their property must be labelled and moved safely. 9. Nurses should identify, obtain and prepare equipment required for postoperative nursing. Intra-operative Care Scrub Nurse 1. Participates directly during the operation. 2. Sets up the operating room and maintenance of a sterile field. 3. Maintains an accurate count of sponges, sharps, and instruments. Circulating Nurse 1. Checks that all requirements are working properly. 2. Responsible for patient skin preparation. 3. Alerts team of any breach in the sterile technique. 4. Documents the activities of the operation. 5. Verify consent and coordinate with the surgical team.
Post-operative Care 1. Transfers patient to Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). 2. Monitors patient's condition closely and to report anything out of the ordinary to the physician or anesthesiologist. 3. Administers pain medications according to the doctor's or hospital's orders.
