    Gas turbines can operate on either natural gas or distillate oil fuels. The system allows for automatic changeover between the two fuels under load.     DUAL FUEL SYSTEM


    Gas Turbines have capability of burning different fuels i.e., both gases and liquids. They will be supplied with both natural gas fuel system and liquid fuel (distillate oil) system with automatic changeover under load. Both mechanical and electrical control components are incorporated in the design of both fuel systems as well as in fuel nozzles, capable of burning either of the fuel types, natural gas and distillate oil. Both the Gas Fuel system and the Liquid Fuel system are described herein. The purge air system and its components are described as part of the Atomizing Air system. The purge systems are activated during a transfer from liquid fuel to gas fuel operation. The text that follows describes the methods of changeover from one type to the other and operation with the mixed fuel. Refer to the Control and protection system section of this manual for additional information relative to the fuel Systems. FUEL CHANGEOVER On dual fuel machines with automatic control, the fuel changeover is initiated manually through the fuel selection membrane switch followed by the Execute or automatically by the low fuel gas pressure. Once initiated, the changeover proceeds automatically to operation on the other fuel system. The automatically initiated changeover occurs only when the transfer is from gas to liquid fuel operation The signal for automatic changeover is given by the fuel gas pressure switch 63FG3, which operates when the fuel gas pressure drops below a preset value. In normal operation, the desired fuel is selected at startup by depressing either the GAS or DISTILLATE switch ( not MIXTURE) If startup was made on gas fuel, changeover to distillate fuel will occur automatically upon loss of the gas fuel pressure. Automatic changeover will only occur after the gas turbine has reached operating speed (speed relay 14HS is picked up) Operation on distillate fuel will continue until gas fuel pressure is reestablished and changeover is initiated manually by pressing the DISTILLATE fuel selector switch first then the GAS fuel selector switch. Thus the transfer back to gas fuel is not automatically initiated. A gradual transition(lasting 30-60 sec) is required to change from fuel gas to fuel oil system. Oil lines are purged of air and filled with oil to avoid delaying delivery of oil when at the end of transition, oil requirement begin to increase. FUEL MIXING During operation, both gas and oil fuels may be turned simultaneously the percentage of each fuel is determined by the operator within permissible limits. The fuel mixture is adjusted by pressing either the GAS or DISTILLATE switch to increase respectively gas fuel or oil fuel percentage, until the desired mixture is displayed on the CRT. When the desired mixture is obtained, the MIXTURE membrane switch must be pressed to hold the fuel proportion.

    NOTE Because of fuel system requirements, it is not permissible to operate in the extreme range of fuel proportion, where the contributing percentage of either fuel is minimal. On dual fuel machines, equipped with an atomizing air system, some atomizing air is diverted to purge liquid fuel nozzles and prevent their cooking during operation on gas fuel.
