Pre Assessment Results and Instructional Objectives

5th Grade Student: Juan

Assessment Reading Notes Response/What Can Do/In What Context We looked at the way students comprehend when they interact with a nonfiction text during a literature circle. The students witnessed teachers participate in a literature circle with each other prior to them participating in a literature circle on their own. Students read the article on their own with no help from teacher. Students were then asked to read in a group by taking turns reading paragraph by paragraph, stopping to ask questions after each one. In the groups, after each paragraph, the students were asked these questions: What are some of the words you didnt know or understand? What questions do you have about what you read? Did you make any connections to the text? Specific things we were looking for were facts, making inferences, and making connections. Juan was able to read the text without teacher assistance. He attempts to paraphrase facts that are given to him. He does make limited connections by stating, I think I have seen one of those before, but does not make any other connections. He does not make inferences at this time, but opportunities were limited. Writing During the nature walk to plaster creek, teachers and students were pointing out specific observations being made about the surroundings. There were conversations out at the creek about these observations as well. Students wrote in their daily journal after taking a nature walk to Plaster Creek. Students were expected to use engaging and detailed descriptions when writing their explanations. Students wrote about the prompt: What did you observe at Plaster Creek? Students needed to stay focused on the topic. This journal entry was written with minimal support from the teacher and without the use of reference material. Juan was able to write complete sentences describing his observations at Plaster Creek. For example, We observed the river with trash in it. He didnt have detailed descriptions, and his sentences all used the exact same format with the almost identical wording. Speaking Students were assessed on their interactions during the literature circle. These were the characteristics desired during the literature circle: 1. Talking with each other and the teacher. 2. Discussing relevant topics. 3. Asking questions. 4. Answering questions. Juan was able to have a conversation with his peers and teacher during the literature circle. The discussion stayed on topic, and he was able to answer questions from peers. He needs to be able to engage more in the discussion by asking higher-level thinking questions about the topic being discussed.
