Maximum displacement can be reached at 60 V for 20 m layer products and at 120 V for 40 m layer products. To avoid polarization of the element, the reverse voltage may not be applied at temperatures above 30 C and should not exceed: 10 V for 20 m layer products 20 V for 40 m layer products.

Full differential voltage control When the operating temperatures of the device exceed 30 C the minimum permissible driving voltage for V21 and V13 must be reduced to 0 V. This means that the Zener diode circuits described in the Sections above are not permitted. Therefore the outer electrodes, numbers 2 and 3, are now connected directly to the supply rails which have slightly reduced voltage (see Fig.14). The voltages V21 and V13 will now remain within the permitted voltage range of 0 to +60 V. In relation to the application described above, the expected maximum stroke or force of the bender is reduced to within approximately 80 to 85%. However, the driving circuit cannot generate driving voltages which may result in electrical depolarization. Because the electrodes 2 and 3 are continuously connected to the power supply rails, the polarization of the bender is sustained. The circuit diagram shown in Fig.14 is recommended for most applications. Extended single-ended voltage control When a bender is toggled between two positions, of which one is defined as the natural power-off position (in a valve application for example), the bender can be controlled as shown in Fig.15. If the input voltage Vin is switched from 0 to +60 V, the voltage on the upper half of the bender V21 will follow because it is directly connected to the input. Simultaneously, the voltage V13 of the lower half of the bender is switched from 0 to 10 V. The transistor and Zener diode circuit assure a fast charge of the lower half of the bender until the voltage V13 almost reaches 10 V. At this voltage the transistor is switched off and the only power consumption is determined by the resistor R1 and the Zener diode D2. When the input voltage Vin switches from +60 to 0 V, diode D1 becomes a conductor and the lower half of the bender will be discharged. For the same reason as mentioned above, this circuit can only be used when the operating temperature of the device will not exceed 30 C. Single-side voltage control For higher operating temperatures the transistor and the Zener diode circuit shown in Fig.15 must be removed and electrode 3 of the bender should be connected to electrode 1 (see Fig.15). The lower half of the bender now makes no active contribution to the bending process and the applicable stroke and/or force of the bender will be reduced to approximately 40%.
