Preparing a Folder
• Create a folder for all files used in creating the video project.
• Click on Start My Documents.
• Double click on the My Videos folder.
• Click on Make a new folder in the Task Pane.
• Enter a name for the folder and then press the Enter key.
• Save the project, pictures, video clips, and sounds used in the project in this folder.
Collecting Resources
• Copy pictures to be used in the movie from the My Pictures folder into the new folder.
o Click on Start My Pictures.
Note: Your pictures may be stored in another location. If so, navigate to the location
where your pictures are and continue as directed below.
o Right click on the folder with the desired pictures and choose Copy.
o In the Task Pane, click on My Documents.
o Double click on the My Videos folder.
o Double click on your video folder.
o Right click on a blank area and choose Paste.
• Copy music to be used in the movie from the My Music folder into the new folder.
o Click on Start My Music.
Note: Your music may be stored in another location. If so, navigate to the location
where your music is and continue as directed below.
o Right click on the folder with the desired music and choose Copy.
o In the Task Pane, click on My Documents.

o Double click on your video folder.

Screen Resolution
• Studio is easier to use with the screen resolution set at 1024 X 768 or
higher.
• On the Desktop, right click on a blank area of the screen.
• Choose Properties.
• Click on the Settings tab.
• In the Screen Resolution area, click on the slider and move it to 1024 or
higher.
• Notice the size of the window in the preview.
• Click on OK.

Starting Studio
• Double Click on Studio Launcher on the desktop
• OR click on Start All Programs Studio 10 Studio Launcher
• Click on Pinnacle Studio Plus
o Note: Studio Launcher allows you to select which part of the
program you would like to use. To go straight into Studio, click on
Start All Programs Studio 10 Studio
Setting Preferences
• On the Menu Bar, click on Setup Project
Preferences.
• If desired, place a check box in front of Automatically
save and load my project.
o When selected, Studio will continually update
your project as you work.
• Set the default duration times for transitions, titles/stills,
and volume fades.
o The first number is the number of seconds, and
the second number is the number of frames.
o Note: The durations can be adjusted later during
editing.
• Click OK.
• Note: Changes made to the preferences affect all future projects, so set preferences at the beginning of
each new project.

The Mode Buttons
• Select which step of the movie making process
to use by clicking on one of the three mode
buttons.
• When a mode button is selected, the Studio screen changes to display the controls needed for the mode.
Capture Mode
• Capture Mode allows you to import video from a
Digital Video camera, camcorder, or other video
device to your computer’s hard drive.
• The Player in the top right corner of the screen
allows monitoring of the source video.
• The Diskometer in the bottom right corner allows
monitoring of available disk space while capturing.
• If no video device is connected, the following error
appears. Troubleshoot by following the onscreen
prompts.
Edit Mode
• Edit Mode allows you to organize and create your
movie, add audio, graphics, and effects.
• The Player in the top right corner of the screen
allows previewing of the movie with effects and
audio.
• The Album in the top left corner stores resources
for use in the movie.
• Across the bottom is the Movie Window. The
movie is built in the Movie Window from materials
in the album.
• The Movie Window has three views: Storyboard
view, Timeline view, and Text view. These
buttons are located in the upper right hand corner of the Movie Window.

Movie Making Views
The Player
• The Player shows clips being played.
• At the bottom of the Player are the control buttons.
• To show a clip in the Player, choose the desired clip by clicking on it
in the Album or in the Movie Window. Then click on the Play
button.
Saving a Project
• Projects should be saved in order to edit the movie in the future.
• On the Menu Bar, click on File Save Project.
• Navigate to your video folder (i.e. the folder in My Documents/My Videos.)
• Give the project a name.
• Click on the Save button.
o Note: The project is saved as a .stx. Only Pinnacle Studio can open this file.
• Save your project regularly and each time before you close the program. This will help eliminate
unnecessary rerendering.

Opening a Project
• On the Menu Bar, click on File Open Project….
• Navigate to the location of the project.
• Click on the project.
• Click on the OK button.
Location of Files
• Pinnacle points to the location of files used in the movie.
• If those files are ever moved, when the project is opened the next time, you will be prompted to locate the
files.
• Browse to the new location and click on the file in question.
• Click on Open.
• This process will have to be repeated if files are being used from more than one folder.
• Continue locating the files as prompted until the project opens for editing.

Creating a Movie
• Movies are made by adding pictures, video clips, titles, transitions, and sounds to the Movie Window.
• To prevent possible problems, begin with video, pictures, and titles. Then add the transitions and the
sounds.
• The process used for inserting any of the above media is basically the same.
• The Album has pages for each type of media.
• To work with a particular type of media, click on the appropriate tab on the left side of the Album.
Inserting Pictures
• Click on the Pictures tab.
• Locate the desired pictures in the Album.
• Click and drag the pictures to the desired location in the Movie Window.
Deleting a Picture
• Click on the picture in the Movie Window.
• Press the Delete key.
Splitting a Picture
• Click on the time ruler on the Timeline view where you want split the media.
• Click on the razor button in the Movie Window.
• The picture can now be treated as two separate pictures.

Checking the Duration of a Picture
• Double click on the desired picture to open the Video Toolbox.
• The name of the clip and the duration of time it will play are listed at the top of the window.
• Close the Video Toolbox by clicking on the “X” in the upper right hand corner of the window.
Rotating a Picture
• Double click on the desired picture to open the Video Toolbox.
• Click on the Rotate 90 degrees left or right buttons.
• Click on the X in the upper right hand corner of the Video Toolbox when finished.
Video Effects
Inserting an Effect
• Double click on the picture the effect will be added to.
• This will open the Video Toolbox.
• Click on the bottom icon that looks like an electrical
plug.
• Click on a category and then an effect to see a preview
for that effect in the player.
o Note: Some effects are only available with activation of premium content by purchasing
additional features and receiving an activation code.
• Click OK to add the desired effect or Cancel.
o Note: Additional effects can be added by clicking on the Add New Effect button and following
the same process.
• Click on the X in the upper right hand corner of the Video Toolbox when finished.
Removing an Effect
• Double click on the picture the effect will be removed from.
• This will open the Video Toolbox.
• Click on the bottom icon that looks like an electrical plug.
• Click on the effect to be removed in the Video Effects section of the window.
• Click on the trash can icon.
• Click on the X in the upper right hand corner of the Video Toolbox when
finished.

Titles and Credits
• Titles can be added at the beginning of the movie, in front of a particular clip, or over the top of a clip as an
overlay.

Creating Rolling Credits
• Click on the timeline at the end of the movie.
• Click on Tool box in the menu and then select Create Title.
• This will open the Video Toolbox to the appropriate section.
• Choose either Full Screen Title or Title Overlay.
• This will open the Title Editor.
• Click on the screen where the text should begin and type the desired text.
• Click on the Roll button (up arrow) in the top left corner of the screen.
• This will automatically move the text to the top center portion of the window.
• To continue adding more text, click on the Text tool (T) at the bottom of the screen. Do not click on the
Roll button again. Doing so stacks the text boxes on top of each other.
o Note: To have the text continue to scroll off the screen, add extra line spaces (by pressing the
Enter key) after the last line of text.
• Click on OK to close the Text Editor and return to the project.
Editing a Title
• Double click on the title to be edited from the Timeline View or the Text View.
o Note: If it is a full screen title, it will be on the video track in the Timeline View. If it is a text
overlay, it will be in the overlay track.
• This will open the Title Editor.
• Make the desired changes.
• Click on OK.
Deleting a Title
• Click on the title to be deleted from the Timeline View or the Text View.
o Note: If it is a full screen title, it will be on the video track in the Timeline View. If it is a text
overlay, it will be in the overlay track.
• Press Delete on the keyboard.
Transitions
• Transitions can be added at the beginning of a picture or title.
Inserting a Transition
• Click on the Show Transitions tab.
o Note: It is easier to add transitions in the Storyboard View.
• Locate the desired transition in the Album.
• Click and drag the transition to the desired location in the Movie Window.
Rippling a Transition
• Rippling a transition allows for repeated use of the same transition throughout the entire movie or
throughout a section of the movie.
o Note: If desired, the transition duration should be adjusted before it is rippled.
• Insert the desired transition between the first two pictures in the movie or section.
• Click on the transition.
• Hold down the Shift key and click on the last picture of the movie or section .
• Right click somewhere on the selected pictures and select Ripple Transition.
Deleting a Transition
• Click on the transition in the Movie Window.
• Press the Delete key.

Deleting all Transitions
• Select the portion of the movie you would like to remove the transitions from.
o Click on the first item and then while holding down the Shift key on the keyboard, click on the last
item.
• Right click on the selection.
• Click on Remove Transition.
SmartSound Music
• SmartSound music is music that is generated within Pinnacle.
• It is instrumental music with various styles, songs, and versions.

DVD Menus
Inserting a Menu
• Click on the first item in the Movie Window.
• In the Album, click on the Show menus button.
• Find the desired menu.
o Note: There are 3 pages of menus to choose from. To access pages 2 and 3, click on the left and
right arrows in the top right hand corner of the album.
• Double click on the desired menu.
• A screen appears asking about setting chapters automatically or manually.
• Click on the radio button in front of “No, I will create chapters manually.”
• Click on OK.
• The Video toolbox will open on the Create or edit a disk menu section.
• It is now necessary to identify the chapters.
Identifying Chapters
• Click on the time ruler in the Timeline view where you want to create a chapter.
• Click on the Create chapter button.
• This will create Chapter 1 which will show in the time ruler.
• To create additional chapters, click on the time ruler where the next
chapter will begin.
• Click on the arrow that points to the right to advance the chapter number.
• Click on the Create chapter button.
• Repeat as needed to create the desired number of chapters.
o Note: The menu will automatically create more pages as needed
to accommodate the number of chapters being used in the movie.
Moving Chapters
• Locate the pink chapter marker in the time ruler to be moved.
• Click and drag the chapter marker to the desired location.
Removing Chapters
• Locate the pink chapter marker in the time ruler to be moved.
• Click on the chapter marker. It will turn blue.
• Press the Delete key.
• Any following chapters will be renumbered automatically.
Renaming Chapters
• By default, Pinnacle Studio names the chapters in correlation with their number. On the menu, each
chapter will say, “Chapter 1” etc.
• If desired, chapters can be renamed to more clearly identify the contents of that chapter.
• Double click on the menu in the Timeline view. The menu should be the first item in the movie.
• The Video Toolbox opens to the edit menu section.
• Click on the left or right arrows to move to the correct chapter.
• In the text area to the right, type in the new chapter name.
• Press the Enter key to complete the change.
• Repeat as needed.
o Note: If more chapters need to be renamed than those showing on the screen, use
the previous and next page arrows at near the bottom of the album to access other
pages in the menu.

Testing the Menu
• Click on the DVD button in the Player.
• Click on the button with three small squares to take you to the Main Menu.
• Click on the buttons to test if they go to the correct place in the movie.
• Use the buttons with the single triangle and vertical line to skip to the next
or previous chapters.
• Click on the DVD button again to return to the regular controls if desired.

Creating a Movie File
• This option is for when there is no access to a DVD burner and/or the movie will be played back on a
computer.
• Note: The process will be faster if the movie has completely finished rendering. This means that you
should not see any green sections in the time ruler. If there are still green sections, consider waiting until
the program completes the rendering process.
• There is no need to have Menus in the project when creating a file. Menus are only for navigation when
using a DVD. It is best to delete any menus used in the project prior to creating a movie file.
• Save the project by clicking on File Save Project.
• Click on the Make Movie tab near the top of the screen.
• Click on the File button in the top left hand corner of the Status Area.
• Select the desired file type from the drop down list.
• In the preset area, select the desired quality.
• Notice that the approximate file size will be displayed in the Size section below the pie chart
showing space available on the computer.
• Click on the Create file button.
• A window opens allowing you to control where the file is saved and with what name.
• Navigate to the desired location (i.e. the folder in My Documents/My Videos.)
• Type in a file name and click OK.
• The Player will display a blue and green status bar showing the progress of the burning.
• Above the status bar, the words, “Movie making in progress…” will be displayed.
• The Player will display the movie in a choppy way as the burning progresses.
• The file is complete when the green progress bar disappears and Make Movie Complete shows right above
the Create file button.
Picture Sources
The Internet
• Go to a website with graphics.
o A list can be found at http://www.davis.k12.ut.us/district/etc/cathy/clipart.html
• Locate the desired picture.
• Right click on the picture and choose Save Picture As...
• Navigate to the desired location for saving the picture. Save the pictures in your movie folder, i.e. My
Documents/My Videos/movie folder.
• Change the file name as desired and click on the Save button.
