How Effective Is The Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?
For my main task I did a documentary named 'The Pursuit' which focused on the subject of success. In our documentary we had a clear narrative and structure by starting with surroundings of Kinshasa to later being introduced to Aristote. The interview with Aristote then takes place and as he is talking there is an intercut of Aristotes day to day activities he often does which include cooking and playing basketball. After seeing a few shots of the day to day life we then move back to the interview where Aristote talks about his aspirations and his dream which is to be in London. As Aristote says that he wishes to be in London music begins as a crescendo (gradually getting louder). As the beat drops we are then introduced to London with famous buildings and people wondering the streets with fast pace editing but gradually there is a diminuendo (gradually getting quieter) and we are then introduced to Jacqui. From showing the high-end parts of London we then begin to show the less fortunate side of London which is Hackney. We then show shots of different surroundings, which included the river, boats and then the caf. Throughout my main product and ancillary texts I made sure that the target audience never forgot about the narrative; Aristotes dream. From using Jacqui I was able to contradict somethings of what Aristote said showing that perhaps London isnt the place of happiness and success. I personally didnt want to do a radio ad because I thought it was going to be a little difficult because I didnt want to give too much away but also wanted to engage my target audience, however once I did it I really enjoyed it and it turned out really well. I didnt detach from the narrative because within the radio ad we used sections from the documentary hearing a little glimpse of what to expect. In terms of my poster ad within my group we all created 3 different posters and then did a focus group to decide what we were going to pick. I struggled with this task just because I wasnt very good with Photoshop and so I didnt want to this task but a magazine article because I thought it was going to be easier. Overall towards the end I enjoyed it and I had a lot of fun with it but didnt forget about what I wanted to portray. I was really happy to do the documentary but my initial idea what to focus on teen stereotypes but then as a group we decided to a documentary on success. We struggled a lot with narrative but then because I was travelling to Kinshasa I gave the initial idea of doing the documentary focusing on to two different people and their lives, which I believe I have shown through my documentary. I think my main product and ancillary texts were really effective
because we made sure the theme of success remained throughout and we never forgot about the narrative. Rather than just focusing on the documentary itself we as a group also needed to create a campaign to help advertise the documentary. All of the ancillary tasks were made to fit with the brief and there had to be an on-going theme throughout each product. We targeted our target audience through a poster ad and a radio ad to enlighten our target audience being the reformer. From our ancillary tasks we hope to get a preferred reading and make people want to watch our documentary compared to an oppositional reading. Within the ancillary tasks there are some similarities as well as some differences. One key similarity is that whilst listening to the radio ad you as an audience are able to see the poster ad so we dont detach from the documentary therefore creating a visual aspect. There is use of sampling within the radio ad from previous footage that we were intending to use in our documentary to create a feel of peoples reaction to success. We added African music in the background along with the narrator to make the radio ad sound more entertaining yet focusing on success. The radio ad helped to boost more awareness on success and our documentary making people want to watch it.

In terms of the poster ad we made each item within the poster stand out but also be subtle so that you focus on the image itself. This also helped to create awareness of the documentary because it provides that sense of mystery and also discovery.
