24 25 MAY 2005 ECOBUILD: DESIGNING AND BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Day 2: 25th May Workshops and Seminars
Module 15 10. 00 - 12.00 Sustainable Water Management in the Built Environment This workshop is an introduction to the issues that need to be addressed to ensure that the UKs buildings use water efficiently and dispose of waste water and storm water in a sustainable manner. All solutions proposed will be analysed as to their suitability as part of a sustainable water strategy. All current relevant regulations will be referred to and the important design points to ensure systems comply. The current situation with water use and disposal and the UK and the effect climate change will have on this Increasing stress on water resources Increasing flooding Reduce water demand by good design and use of low water appliances Dual flush WCs - new and retrofit devices Urinal controls and waterless urinals Composting toilets Flow regulators and low flow taps and showers Reduce water demand using alternative water supplies Rainwater Harvesting Greywater Recycling Disposal of foul water best environmental options Reed beds and constructed wetlands Stormwater management Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) Module 16 13.45 - 15.00 Sustainable Energy: Combined Heat and Power CHP is an important element in the Government's new energy policy, as set down in the Energy White Paper. The bold ambition is to set the UK on the path to achieving a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. CHP targets What is Good Quality CHP? CHP Strategy Module 17 15.15 - 16.30 An Architects' Guide to Implementing Part L & the EPBD Meeting new energy performance targets in buildings. The new Part L regulations will have a major impact on the design process for any building type. It is essential to familiarise yourself with the new regulations and understand how to adapt your working practices to conform to Part L.Additionally, the EPBD will encourage clients to take an increase interest in the energy efficiency of their buildings. Do you understand how Part L will impact building design and are you equipped to meet your client's increase awareness in sustainability issues? Keith Boxer, Architect - Sheppard Robson Steve Irving, Director of Building Research - FaberMaunsell [tbc] Measures to encourage CHP Jeremy Eppe - Sustainable Energy Defra Workshop Leader: Cath Hassell

Module 18 10.00 - 11.15 Specifying timber from sustainable sources TRADA CPD Workshop There are many challenges to ensuring that sustainable timber is used in projects. The timber industry - throughout the entire timber supply chain - has made huge strides over the past decade in handling these challenges. This session will update specifiers on the progress made and provide guidance on how they can specify sustainable timber. Alasdair McGregor, TRADA

Module 19 11.45 - 13.00 Climate for Change The Future Shape of Timber Frame Timber frame is currently used for over 15% of all new build housing and a third of all new Social Housing in England & Wales. So why are more and more construction professionals choosing Timber Frame? Bryan Woodley, CEO - UK Timber Fame Association [tbc] John Tong, Managing Finnforest President of Timber Trade Federation [tbc]

Module 21 10.00 - 11.15 Harvesting the Countryside: Hemp for sustainable environmental development Module 22 11.45 - 13.00 Energy Challenge Your chance to plan the energy future of the UK! In this light-hearted (but slightly mathematical) challenge, your team will use supplied numbers forthe energy that can be collected using different renewable energy technologies, plan energy budgets, and decide the best mix for the UK of the future - running on 100% renewable energy! Jackie Carpenter - Energy 21 Hemp - harvest the countryside and build with it... build dry, build light, build with thermal mass. A dream come true? Ralph Carpenter - Modece Architects

Module 23 14.00 - 15.30 Building-Integrated Photovoltaics Workshop Ecobuild will hold a workshop on the practical aspects of integrating PV in buildings. It will be a major opportunity for people to learn from others' experience, and to hear how successful other groups have been in implementing PV. The real effect of the announcement made by Mike OBrien, the new Minister for Energy of an additional 6 million to extend the PV Major Demonstration Programme through 2005.
