NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS

FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS

The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning April 15th and continuing through May 17th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the mains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water. If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from being drawn into your water piping system. If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining discolored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY. Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers. Gross Tax Service, LLC

For most individuals, the tax return is the single most important financial statement prepared and filed on an annual basis. Doesnt it make sense to have your return prepared by an expert in the field of taxation? The Enrolled Agent (EA) is the tax expert to seek to prepare your tax return and provide tax planning. An (EA) is a federally-authorized tax practitioner who has technical expertise in the field of taxation and who is empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the Internal Revenue Service for audits, collections, and appeals. Enrolled Agents are Federally Authorized Return Preparers, licensed by the IRS, with continuing education requirements in taxation, and subject to a code of ethics. Only enrolled agents are required to demonstrate to the IRS their competence in matters of taxation. Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who are state licensed and who may or may not choose to specialize in taxes, all enrolled agents specialize in taxation. Enrolled agents are the only taxpayer representatives who receive their unlimited right to practice from the U.S. government (CPAs and attorneys are licensed by the states). Enrolled agents advise, represent, and prepare tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, estates, trusts, and any entities with tax-reporting requirements. Enrolled agents expertise in the continually changing field of taxation enables them to effectively represent taxpayers at all administrative levels within the IRS. Put your tax return in hands in the professional you can trust. Michelle Gross, EA, is currently accepting new clients to her tax practice, Gross Tax Service, LLC. CMH makes green initiatives a top priority

The Going Green Committee at Community Memorial Hospitalwhich began in the summer of 2008has undertaken many initiatives to stay as green as possible. The group began by assembling hospital representatives involved in the waste, cleaning, energy usage, food preparation and medical supply areas. They first brainstormed to see what they had already accomplished and then looked ahead to future changes. Some of these efforts include: CMH began recycling surgical blue wraps (the wraps that are on the sterilized equipment in surgery) and hard health care plastics (irrigation bottles, gauze containers, etc.) in October 2012. In November, a large project involving the purchase of new beds, tables and phones for patient rooms was successfully completed. The project has allowed staff to perform their jobs more efficiently while improving the patient experience. It also included ways to repurpose or recycle the items that were removed. When more than 150 new beds were brought in, the old beds were traded back to Green River Medical, a company that specializes in redistribution for used medical equipment. The old beds went to the Dominican Republic; they were distributed in and around the Santo Domingo area to small hospitals and clinics. This spring, the hospital will be replacing the parking lot lights on the hospital campus with new LED technology. They will only use about half the energy that the existing lights use and still give off the same light. For the past 30 years, kitchen grease has been saved and picked up to be made into soap. Old pens, markers, highlighters and more are turned into a company that makes a donation to a charity of ones choice. The CMH Environmental Value Statement is as follows: Community Memorial Hospital is committed to a role of environmental responsibility in all facets of our business. We fulfill this mission by: Educating our workforce about environmentally friendly practices, along with our efforts and successes; Encouraging a personal responsibility to care for the environment; Identifying and developing relationships with suppliers who provide environmentally responsible products and services; Investigating and implementing costeffective, environmentally responsible solutions; and Measuring and reporting the organizations environmental footprint.

Hamilton student wins national art award

Hamilton High School senior Constance Dowden won a Gold Medal in the comic art category of the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Dowden is the first Hamilton student to receive this national art award. The awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Students in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Dowden received a Gold Key at the regional level which qualified her work to advance to the national competition. Submissions are juried by visual and literary arts experts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. The National Medalists will celebrate this recognition May 31 at a prestigious ceremony at Carnegie Hall. The winning works will be showcased in New York City art galleries.

Marcy students collect supplies for Childrens Hospital

Marcy Elementary School students in the classes of kindergarten teacher Kathleen Mueller and second grade teacher Amanda Lindstedt recently made heartfelt contributions to Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin. The students and their families collected art supplies for the children who are patients and visitors at the hospital. "Thousands of children pass through the doors at Childrens Hospital some very ill, some with a fever and some who are accompanying their sick sibling," Mueller explained. "While children try to keep busy during some very long waiting times, or out of boredom while in the hospital, art supplies comes in handy." The two classes donated boxes full of supplies that will be enjoyed by many children. In addition to the donations, Muellers kindergarteners made little bears that will be placed on window sills in childrens rooms, and Lindstedts second graders made bookmarks. The students learned an important lesson about giving. One kindergartner said, "I hope this makes them smile. It makes me smile!"

Germantown Chamber presents civic awards to notable business, community members

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
The Germantown Chamber of Commerce announced the 2012 Community Awards winners at its annual dinner and meeting event held March 26 at Nardos Passport Inn in Germantown. The recipients are: Business of the YearHappy Hounds Doggie Daycare & Dog Training: In business for eight years, Happy Hounds was nominated for their participation in events through various organizations and charitable involvement in the community. They were the perfect fit for the award, said Germantown Chamber Executive Director Lynn Grgich. Whether a large or small business, Happy Hounds Doggie Daycare & Dog Training exemplifies the criteria that are looked at in choosing a winner for Business of the Year, she said. Citizen of the YearGermantown Police Chief Peter G. Hoell: Not just anyone can receive this prestigious honor, said Grgich. Qualifying to be Citizen of the Year isnt an award the recipients have aspired to, it comes out of simply seeing things that need to be done and stepping up to the task, she said, noting that Hoell has done exactly that, both in his role as police chief and as a community member. Not only is he a member of several local organizations, but the chief organized the Germantown Civic Group and donates his time to Mai Fest, Relay for Life and various Kiwanis events. In his unique position, he sees a lot that needs to be done, and even outside of those requirements he has stepped up to meet some of those needs, said Grgich. Lifetime Achievement Award winnerJohn Gehl: Gehl, who retired in November 2012 as President and CEO of Gehl Foods, Inc., was the third generation of this family-owned company that has been in Germantown since 1896. In the position since 1963, Gehl deserved this special honor, said Grgich. We did not want this occasion to pass without recognizing his contributions to both the business and the community, she said. The executive director expressed pride and gratitude for the honoreesthis year and in years pastthat have made the village a better place. Each year I am amazed and humbled by the accomplishments and dedication of the recipients, said Grgich. They are not motivated by glory, but by passion.

Local salon owner lends services to cancer patients

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
A cancer survivor two times over, West Bend resident Barbara Justmanowner of BJ & Company, located at 446 S. Main Street in downtown West Benduses her personal story to be a mentor to others in need, but has a heart for people in general. I just like helping people, whether they be cancer patients or older people, or anyone, Justman said. Hairdressers are like bartenderswe listen to everyones problems. A graduate of the Adele Ballou Cosmetology and in the field for nearly 50 years, Justman is known as a trusted professional in cosmetology and wellness. While she has a special gift for making those going through cancer treatments feel beautiful, Justman offers her extensive services to everyone. BJ & Company offers the full line of beauty products and serviceshaircuts, coloring and styling; wigs, hair pieces and extensions; facials; body waxing; aromatherapy; body wraps; tanning; ear piercing; massages; manicures and pedicures and morehowever, the salons best asset is clearly its owner, who approaches every trial with a wry sense of humor. When diagnosed with colon cancer in 1998, she was running five minutes behind for an appointment with a client. I said, Sorry Im late, I just found out I have cancer, she recalled with a laugh. And when telling the story of how the beauty shop was gutted by a fire in 2009, Justman focuses on the positive, cheerfully explaining how a former employee offered the rental of part of her own building down the street until Justman could re-establish BJ & Company. The fire happened on Monday, we were open for business on Wednesday, said Justman. We didnt skip a beat. Aside from the business she has run since 1979, Justman also donates her aesthetic services to cancer patients, both as a trainer for theLook Good...Feel Better program for the past 22 years and, more recently, at the Small Stones Wellness Center located in the lobby of the Kraemer Cancer Center at Froedtert Health St. Josephs Hospital in West Bend. For Look Good, Feel Bettera free nationwide program for cancer patientsJustman trains other hairdressers in beauty options for women undergoing cancer treatment. We start out by putting makeup and wigs on the model and then everyone follows and does it on themselves, she said. It starts out serious, but pretty soon everyone is having a great time. Justman volunteers two afternoons each week at Small Stones, a new addition to the community that is slowly but surely attracting interest, she said. We can shave heads there, we have some wigs on display and can order wigs, we have make up, she said. People are starting to peek inside and see what were all about. The wellness center also offers books focusing on inspiration, self-help and nutrition, meditation CDs and unique jewelry and gift items. "It makes everything easier, more accessible (for individuals dealing with cancer), she said. This is something Justman can appreciate as nine years after her colon cancer diagnosis, in 2009, for which she underwent chemotherapy, Justman found out she had breast cancer and had to go through radiation. Justman said her difficult experiencesboth personally and with many family members who have faced cancergive her a unique perspective in helping others going through the same struggle. I think people feel more comfortable with me, she said. You live through it and its such a pain, but then you can help people and give them hope. Justmanwho has been married to husband Homer for 47 yearsstays busy and involved in many other ways as well. She is the past chairman and director of the Wisconsin Hair Fashion Committee; has served 30-plus years as an Ambassador for the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce; and has been a West Bend Rotarian for more than 25 years. But more than anything else she identifies herself as a people person. I like being with people, she said. I feel like I am uplifting to the clients. Were always laughing about something. Appointments at BJ & Company are appreciated, but not necessary. The salon is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to around 6 p.m. most days with shorter hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays. One can contact the salon by calling (262) 3380033. To reach Small Stones Wellness Center, call (262) 836-7272.
