Geotechnics 3 1. Oedometer Test 1.

1 Introduction
Oedometer test is a one-dimensional compression test. It can be used to determine the compression characterisation of a soil under specific loading range. The one-dimensional characteristics of a soil are compression index, coefficient of volume compressibility, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of permeability. Figure 1 shows an example of oedometer test.

1.2 Objectives
The objectives of this laboratory are to determine the compression characterisation of soil as below: -Compression index, Cc -Coefficient of volume compressibility, mv -Coefficient of consolidation, Cv -coefficient of permeability, k

1.3 Procedures
I) The soil sample is filled into the consolidation cell with two porous stones between it. II) The consolidation cell is placed in the consolidation frame and water is filled around the reservoir. III) The loading hanger is loaded at centre of the soil sample. The first load of 2kg (100kPa) is applied to the soil sample through the hanger and the stop watch is started simultaneously. IV)The vertical displacement gauge reading of soil sample is taken at the time interval as in Table 1. V)Step I to IV is repeated for the load of 4kg (200kPa), 8kg (400kPa), 16kg (800kPa) and 32kg (1600kPa).
