7)07A4EC09 & 54010- Switching Theory and Logic Design COURSE OBJECTIVE: This course covers combinational and sequential logic circuits. Topics include number systems, Boolean algebra and switching functions, minimization of switching functions, logic design, PLDs, classification of sequential circuits, Flip Flops and design of sequential circuits using Finite State Machines and Algorithmic State Machine. Upon completion, students should be able to construct, analyse, verify, and troubleshoot digital circuits using appropriate techniques and test equipment. COURSE OUTCOMES: On successful completion of the course, student will be able to 1. Understand numerical and character representations in digital logic including ASCII, sign magnitude, 2s complement, and different codes, errors in the codes and how to detect and correct those codes. 2. Basics of Boolean algebra, theorems and properties. And be able to simplify the Boolean algebra to get minimal expression and its truth table. 3. Able to implement minimization procedure using different methods such as Karnaugh map or Tabular minimization or prime implication chart to obtain minimal SOP and POS. 4. Design combinational digital circuits to meet a given specification and be able to represent logic functions in multiple forms, understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each.
5. To realise all the switching functions using different PLDs, and will know their capabilities and limitations. 6. To design sequential circuits using Flip Flops (SR flip-flops, and/or T flip-flops, and/or JK flipflops and/or D flip-flops) and counter modules. 7. Select the state chart or ASM chart to represent the sequential circuit. 8. Oppertunities for the students to practice solve extra problems; interact with faculties, teaching assistance in tutorial classes to enhance expertise. 9. Several homework assignments given which reinforce analytical skills learned in class. Relevance to Program Outcomes: COs 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Pos PO1 PO2 PO3 PO4 PO5 PO6 PO7 PO8 PO9 PO10 PO11
Program outcomes and how they are covered by the specific course outcomes: PO1: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics (including probability, statistics and discrete mathematics), science, and engineering The basic mathematics and sciences are strongly required to analyse Boolean algebra and semiconductor behaviour in logic gates. And for understanding numerical and character representations in digital logic, 2s complement etc. PO2: Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyse and interpret data including hardware and software components Design logic, conduct experiments using logic gates, combinational circuits and sequential circuits. PO3: Ability to design a complex electronic system or process to meet desired needs A system can be designed using ASM and FSM concepts. PO4: Ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams The basics of this subject have strong roots in the fields like electrical and computers engineering. PO5: Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
Opportunities for the students to practice solve extra problems; interact with faculties, teaching assistance in tutorial classes. By identifying inputs and outputs an engineering problem is solved by using required components. PO7: An ability to communicate effectively The student has to submit assignments and present seminars which help in communicating his ideas effectively. PO8: The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context A detailed idea of hardware, software and firmware helps in solving complex engineering problems in a global and societal context. PO9: a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning As we analyze we get in depth knowledge of these concepts and need to upgrade knowledge. PO10: knowledge of contemporary issues Knowledge on VLSI, VHDL and microcontrollers helps in building Mobile technology, embedded systems. PO11: Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice Knowledge on combinational and sequential circuits helps in understanding and practice engineering concepts as this course is a must for building any digital circuit.
