STEEL FOUNDERS SOCIETY OF AMERICA 20-66 Standard Specification for Casts Steel Abrasives
Microstructure
The microstructure of the abrasive shall consist of martensite tempered to a degree consistent with the hardness range. When examined at 4X magnification, no more than 5% of the shot particles will have a length that is in excess of twice the cross section. No more than 10% of cast steel abrasive particles shall contain voids as determined at 10X magnification. A void must be greater than 10% of the area of the abrasive particle to be considered harmful. No more than 10% of cast steel abrasive particles shall contain shrinkage as determined at 10X magnification. A shrinkage area must be greater than 40% of the area of the abrasive particle to be considered harmful. No more than 15% of cast steel shot particles, and no more than 40% of cast steel grit particles, shall have cracks as determined at 10X magnification. A crack is a linear discontinuity whose length is greater than 3 times its width and greater than 20% of the diameter of shortest dimension of the abrasive particle.

PRODUCT RANGE
Steel Shot
This is a spherical shaped product made of hypereutectoid steel that has been heat treated to a finely tempered martensitic structure providing maximum breakdown resilience and thus extending product life. This is an angular product made from selected and heat treated stock that is processed through high efficiency crushers and graded to size. Efficient crusher processing reduces surface cracking in the material and provides a superior product. With a maximum hardness of 68 HRC it maintains its angularity during operation and provides a constant cutting (etching) action. This product is designed specifically for air blast operations. At 55 to 60 HRC this product is harder than SG Steel Grit. It loses sharpness during operation and is suited to plate and section preparation. Rapidly looses sharpness due to it being softer than HG and LG grades. Hardness is 40 to 50 HRC. It is suited to new plate and section preparation. Specially developed mix of shot and grit used for operations where a high production rate with minimal on site control is required. High production foundries are an ideal user of this product. A granite cutting abrasive made from specially sized and treated shot and grit. Optimal shape and durability ensure maximum cutting efficiency.

In addition, our laboratory features: Latest micro testing equipment Particle fatigue testing (Sigma innovation) Variable impact durability test Metallographic analysis ISO 9002 (by 2001) Test blasting capability Micro hardness testing Spectrographic analysis Internet support ISO 14000 (by 2001)
CUSTOMER SUPPORT
We are committed to total quality. The total quality concept applies not only to the manufacturing and distribution processes, but also includes our relationship with our customers. Steel shot and grit, as consumables, comprise only + 10% of total blasting or cutting operational costs. At sigma we improve the cost effectiveness of our product through the E.D.I.T. Program offered at no charge to our customers.
