This is a reference guide to standard treads used in the Arden Elements range. Many custom staircases will demand their own unique tread design. Also, new developments in architectural flooring materials and slip-resistant strips naturally ensure that tread specifications are in a continual state of evolution. This appendix can be used in conjunction with other Arden technical data sheets to aid in the specification process. Most tread designs listed here are specified to work with other Arden staircase or stringer elements. It is our hope that it may be used by architects to help with preliminary tread specification early in the design process. As with all aspects of staircase design, tread specifications may need to be altered to meet site-specific requirements.

Several standard solid timber tread (STT) specifications are shown, some incorporating slip-resistant strips and/or applied nosings. Solid timber treads with risers (STTR) also show options for either vertical or raked riser boards. Laminated timber treads (LTT) involve a composite construction and may be selected for greater thickness or stability. Alternatively they may be required due to the specification of rubber or vinyl on the top surface, and/or to allow for the incorporation of structural steel supports that are fixed to stringers. Some of these designs incorporate applied edge trim as well as nosings. Laminated timber treads with risers (LTTR) may be designed with the bottom faces of the treads to be visual or non-visual. The stack block tread (SBT) is a special design that represents a method of cladding a stringer in order to create an illusion of stacked blocks. The diagrams showing reconstituted stone treads (RST) and ceramic tile covered treads (CTT) illustrate typical ways of approaching this kind of floor surface on treads.

compliance
Arden is a BSA licensed contractor for carpentry, joinery, glass, glazing and aluminium as well as structural metal fabrication and erection. Arden supplies a Form 16 (Licensed Contractor) on all projects. In design and construct contracts, a Form 15 (Design Engineer) certification is supplied upon request. Please see specific product technical data sheets to check level of compliance with relevant codes and standards.

design note
For all commercial applications, it is important that sufficient space for the stairwell cavity be allowed to satisfy Australian Standards and BCA requirements.
The footprint is primarily driven by the floor to floor rise, as well as the staircase configuration chosen. However, stringer and balustrade style design may increase the amount of space required. Allowing too small a cavity can restrict the design options of the staircase. Also, points at where the staircase interacts with other structures are best addressed early in the design cycle. Consultation with Arden early on will help ensure that these design issues can be addressed in a cost-effective manner.
