Mobile Device Holder

Design Context: Have you ever spent ages wandering around the house looking for your mobile device? Does it fall off the place you store it? Are cables in the way when you are recharging it? Wouldnt it be great to have a cool looking holder to put your device in so you can find it easily and safely store it? Brief: (The brief outlines the design problem/situation and asks us to come up with a solution) Design Brief: I will make this Mobile Holder for my mom. My mom uses an iPhone so the product must hold an iPhone on an angle that it can be charged. My moms favourite colour is purple so the product should have some purple in it. The iPhone holder will be on her desk, in her bedroom. Criteria for success: Design projects usually have limitations. This project is no different; the limitations and success criteria are called design Specifications. Design Specifications / Criteria for success: The product: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Must be made from acrylic. It should hold an iPhone. It should be on an angle that the iPhone can be charged. It should include purple in its design. It should be self-standing. It should be on my moms desk in her room. Must not have a sharp edge.

Criterion A: Inquiring and Analysis

What is Acrylic?
Acrylic is the short/simple name for polymethylmethacrylate and is a plastic. The word plastic means easily shaped. There are 2 families of plastic and they are called thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics. Acrylic is part of the thermoplastics family. Plastics are made from refined crude oil but were once made from such as plants, insects and animal products. (All answers can be found in Collins Foundation course book P36 37) pages Acrylic comes in many different colours and thicknesses and can also be transparent and translucent. Some of the physical properties it has included: It is STIFF, HARD However, it scratches easily and you should keep the paper backings for as long as possible It RESISTS the weather well It is very DURABLE (this means lasts for a long time) It is stronger than GLASS It has the same IMPACT resistance as glass. But again, it scratches easily It is LIGHTER than glass It CUTS and SHAPES WELL List as many uses for acrylic as possible. You might wish to look for information in places other than the Collins book. 1. Transparent glass substitute 2. Interior Decoration

How do we work with acrylic?

Important points to remember when working with acrylic 1 Always keep the protective paper on the surface of the acrylic. Work on a clean surface to avoid scratches Support the sheets securely when cutting or filing Use scrap wood or cardboard to protect the sheets when using a metal vice When drilling always cover the area to be drilled with sticky tape or masking tape. You should also make sure you drill into a waste (not needed) piece of wood.

6. Take great care when gluing because you will not be able to remove the glue from the shiny surface. Can you think of any other useful tips for working with acrylic? If you can you should list them down here. If you dont think of any until you finish the project that is okay, but you must REMEMBER to write the down. MY TIPS for working with acrylic:

Guiding research questions:

Tasks:
Answer the research questions on pages 3 4 of the unit booklet Explain (with photos) why you wish to create the holder (explain the problem) Make a list of research you will need to do in order of importance and explain how you will get that information. What information do I need? Dimension of the iPhone (with cover) Length of the charger in the iPhone What mom likes? Where do I get it? Measure the iPhone Measure the iPhone Mom

Present your work well! 1. Choose a device you wish to create a holder for. What item/s will it hold? 2. What are the dimensions of the mobile device? What other features of my device should I note? 3. Where will this product live? Will it be moved around? 4. Who is this for? 5. Acrylic what colours can I use? 6. What design styles, interests, pictures and tastes do I like? Example below: My mom likes this picture because it is colourful and it also feels like it is moving. She likes colourful, abstract things. I will have to find out how I can use this in my mobile phone holder.

7. Are there any existing products? (Find three and compare and discuss the features. Why do you like/not like them? o Material, sizes, style, functions, features o Explain advantages and disadvantages

I think this mobile holder is really cute and innovative because even though its simple it still has a cute little hand. This mobile holder also has a place to insert the charger at the bottom. I think it will be hard to cut out the hand so I wont use the idea of the hand, but without the hand the iPhone will not stand so (I have to invent something NEW!)

I think this mobile holder is cool because it is a hiker carrying a phone. I dont think I would be using any design of this because it is 3D and I cant make it with acrylic. The only thing I would use is the gap for the charger.

Client preference..why? Making it for myself. Your preferencewhy? My preference is the first design. First of all because it meets all my expectations. I also prefer the first one because I like the way it looks and I think that it will look very cool on my desk. Can the design be improved in the low score against specifications?
12 | P a g e

TOTAL

Yes, it can because we can change the design to make it a little bit better with stability.

Comments: list the changes you made to the chosen design and the plan when making the solution (how similar is your product compared to the paper model you made?) discuss your level of technical skills(tools and machine processes) when making the solution Give yourself a grade out of 10 for: o The finished product usefulness and function o The polishing and finishing of the product o Your level of skill outlines simple, relevant testing methods, which generate data, to measure the success of the solution outlines the success of the solution against the requirements of the design specification based on authentic product testing (compare your product against your specifications) outline how the solution could be improved (defines relevant tests)-performs a test analyses outlines the impact of the solution on the client/target market
