Teaching is an art for it calls for the exercise of talent and creativity; but it is also a science for it involves a repertoire of techniques, procedures and skills that can be systematically studied and described, and therefore transmitted and improved. Science consists of knowing while art refers to doing and implies skills and aesthetic excellence.
This portfolio deals with my different collections of a student teacher who having a practice teaching at Cagayan National High School. It also contains a very challenging experience and updates the different events that are happened during my observations and participations at Cagayan National High School. You can also see the beauty and essence of being a teacher by reading this portfolio. It also presented my different learning experiences during my practicum to this institution. Practice teaching is therefore the real test of what one has learned in his years of study in teaching-training institution. It is in practice teaching that one will apply the principles, theories, precepts, methods, informations, skills, attitudes and values that one has gleaned in his years of schooling. It is practice teaching that the student will show if he/she is ready to go out into the field. This portfolio aims to make you feel to understand the essence of being a teacher it also state the different experiences happened during my observations and participations at Cagayan National High School and help you to understand and appreciate the role of a teacher in the classroom, and share the different experiences happened during my observations to this school.
These portfolio contains the different experiences happened during my observation and participation at Cagayan National High School. I wish to express my sincerest and heartfelt gratitude to those who helped me to complete this portfolio. To Dr. Olivia Pasicolan our supervising instructor, for giving us her unending words of encouragement and words of wisdom and for preparing us for our future endeavors. To Mrs. Linda Tungcul Cagayan National High School Principal, who opened her hearts and hands for us practice teachers for accepting us to have a practicum in their school and to gather experiences in order for us to become an ideal teacher in the future. To my mentor Mr. Jordan Marcos for giving me courage to deal with the different students in the public school and inspiring me that being a teacher you need to engage yourself with the different responsibilities and be patient enough to accept the realities happened in the world of teaching, and always remind me that being a teacher you need to become friendly to the students and be firm to my decisions and also be brave in facing the different students. To my family, especially to my parents who relentlessly sustained my needs during my demonstrations and always there to give comforting words, understanding and support me whatever struggle will come. To my brothers and sisters, and most especially to my friends, for their help, patience, and for understanding my situation. To Biotch (biology majors) who are always there giving their help in case you need them, thank you so much. Dear Lord, you have given me the great responsibility of being a teacher. Help me always to act fairly and justly; but to justice help me always to add mercy and sympathy. Help me to know when to enforce discipline and when to relax it. Help me never to be prejudiced against any man or be guilty of favoritism. Help me to remember that students are more important than material things and they are more important than money. Keep me from abusing my authority or exercising it with harshness or tyranny as a show of power but keep me also from being afraid to exercise it at all. Help me to be a good example to my students of the virtues of honesty, integrity, justice, loyalty and self- discipline. Grant me your wisdom and guidance in all my actions and decisions so that they will be for the common good. And help me never to forget, Lord, that even if I am a teacher with authority, all authority comes from you and still you are the greatest teacher. AMEN.

With the Thomasites as the organizers, the Cagayan National High School was formally opened in June 1905 with Albrow S. Browell as its Principal. It was homed in the Orton Websters residence which was later brought by the Government its first school building. In 1909, the first sets of high school seniors graduated and one of them was Baldomero Perez who lately becomes the provincial Treasury and governor of Cagayan. Meanwhile, to solve the Pressing problems of teachers shortage, the school which at the same time was a teacher training institution offered Science in 1918 and secondary normal courses in 1921. In February 1922, laid the cornerstone of the new Cagayan national high school building as it present site, which was completed and inaugurated after a year. After more than two decades, the Americans came up with school administrators that chose Mr. Bugbears as principal, Mr. Demetrio M. Andres, a native of Marikina, became the first Filipino Principal of the school in 1931. During the term, post graduate normal courses were opened top meet the demand for the elementary school teachers However in march 1937, the last group of normal senior students graduated. For the first time, two valedictorians were proclaim and one of the general courses and one for the normal courses. Meantime, the out breast of World War II forced the school to close for three years, nevertheless in September 1945; the school was re-opened by Principal Pedro M. Azunda with a handful of teachers holding classes in bomb. In july 1945, regular publication of the Cagayan national high school student chronicle which is the school organ on Cagayan national high school up to this day was resumed; Prospero Olivas was the editor in chief . The school continued to progress between 1951-1975 through the effort of the principal Vito S. Diaz; the head from 1953-1960. A printing press building was constructed through the aid of the late Congressman Tito Dupaya. In 1967-1972, the school is one of the ten pilot schools in teaching secondary schools English is the medium of instruction, as such it was the regional center for the five year English program. The school year 1974-1975 started the implementation of the revised secondary curriculum program which is the present curriculum, the turning point of the history of Cagayan national high school followed by nationalization in july 01, 1976 by virtue of the presidential decree 1050. Mr. Condrado Bacuyag was the last male principal of Cagayan national high school. At the realm of Cagayan National High School after Mr. Conrado Bacuyag, promoted to the position of Schools Division Superintendent, the first lady principal was Mrs. Teresa Perez under her leadership; all the contestants of the secondary schools were awarded.

I can say that I was lucky and blessed with a kind of cooperating teacher that I have because he really want me to become good in my future career. He trained me very much in preparation of my future career as a good builder of the youngster. He shares lot things for me about his experiences in the teaching profession that is why I dont have any problem in working with my cooperating teacher for four months. I really learn much from him because he gave me a chance to expose myself to face the realities inside the classroom through demo teachings. He also allows me to accomplish my demo teachings even if there are some interruptions. He also orients me with the different realities that are expected to be happened at the high school department most especially in a public school and be ready for whatever problems that I will encounter through my demo teachings. He is also understandable because sometimes I dont have a time to do whatever he demands me to do. My cooperating teacher have a sense of humor, he is also very approachable so, I was lucky enough to have a very brave cooperating teacher. I can say that my cooperating teacher is best teacher.
I can say that Im not so close with the school principal and some of the faculty members of Cagayan National High School but I can say that I already a part of them by accommodating and help us feel that we accepted. And they are also very supportive to us as a practice teacher in their school.
A good leader is a good follower. As you look at her, you will think that she is strict and terror. That is the reason why at first we are afraid to approach her. The person Im referring to is Mrs. Ernestina Carinugan, the department head of the science department. We first met her during our orientation. She came to our school to share to us the rules and regulation of Cagayan National High School; we will have our practice teaching. She doesnt let us choose our cooperating teacher bur rather she gave her some background of each teacher. As days pass I observed that she is very diligent. She come to school very early and roam around to see whether the teachers are teachings and to check if the surroundings is clean. Looking into the science head, she was really a good boss. In our first week there she assigns us to substitute a class and we accept it because I do believe that this will train as I continue to my practice teaching. When I had my final demo teaching Mrs. Ernestina Carinugan, the department head
of the science department is one of my evaluators, I feel lucky and flattered when she said that the teacher is good and congratulate me.
Since we just started last November until February, I will also experience to involve myself with the different activities at Cagayan National High School because they invited us to join their activities of the school which was prepared by the students during their Christmas party celebration, I were invited to join in their party to the advisory class of my cooperating teacher and during this celebration they having their programs like the intermission number of the students a boys group versus girls group competition; during this celebration I observed that the students are very active in participating in the program prepared by the officers of our advisory class.

CNHS (Cagayan National High School) is the biggest secondary school in Cagayan. And it is also considered as the most enrolled students in the whole Cagayan. CNHS (Cagayan National High School) composed of more or less than 100 classrooms. But in these 100 classrooms some only are conducive for learning. And I say so because there are some classrooms that have blackboard that have a big hole in which you can only use the half part of it like the classroom of the advisory class of my teacher 2nd year section 25 and some also have a blackboard that is very small not enough for the writings of the teacher because the size is good for a bulletin board only. Some classrooms also have chairs that are destroyed and it is no longer usable. There are also some classrooms that dont have proper ventilation and no waste can which makes the classroom very dirty. And of all their comfort rooms smells bad and very dirty. Garbages in the school are always full which makes the environment very odorous. They say that small group is better than big groups. This is because you cant manage the big groups because of its wide scope compare to a small group. The environmental problems should not happen if only the students follow school rules and policies. And with this, managers in schools should implement rules and policies regarding this kind of problems. They should see to it that the rules and regulations should really be followed.
A teacher really needs their lesson plan which serves as a blueprint of what he intends to build; whether they be in terms of attitudes, hearts, skills or knowledge. With this, I observe that the Lesson was simultaneously taught when I saw the success and progress of the students after all. I also observed that my cooperating Teacher employed different types of lesson plan such as Detailed, Semi-Detailed and Brief Lesson Plan, depending on the type of topic she taught. Making detailed lesson plan is very difficult to do. Aside from time consuming, it will make you suffer from headache. I say this because you will really think critically most especially on the objectives or what you want your students to learn and you to see to it that your objectives is attainable and suited to the level of the understanding of your students and not only that but also to the contents of your lesson.
In making detailed lesson plan I experienced many sleepless nights. As I have said it will consume more time to make one. First thing you do is to read first many books about the topic because you cant able to produce lesson plan if you didnt understand the topic. After understanding the lesson, formulate your objectives and I find difficult in formulating such. Next is your motivation. Actually it took me an hour to make motivation. It is difficult to make one in which your motivation should arouse the interest of the students. And it really needs to think critically. After completing all the parts of the lesson plan you will re-unite it which really consumed more time.
Semi-detailed lesson plan is easy than making detailed lesson plan. Because in semi-detailed lesson plan it takes less time to make one compared when you make a detailed lesson plan. Actually they are the same but the only difference is that in lesson proper you will only write
the questions about the topic but in the detailed lesson plan you need to write the response of the students. See you will really consume less time in with this kind of lesson plan. But for me, if it talks about executing the plan I prefer detailed lesson plan because you will able to master your topic well if the students response is indicated in your lesson plan. You will also master the sequence or the organization of your lesson if the lesson plan is written in detailed.
Before our Dean deployed us to our practice teaching at Cagayan National High School she let us to attend first the orientation. Mrs. Ernestina Carinugan orient us about the different policies in their school, (Cagayan National High School) and aside from that she teach us about the proper management of classroom such as how to handle the behavior of the students, how to make the classroom conducive for learning and to know what are the good qualities of the teachers. She also told us that students in a public school are different so we need to prepare ourselves to face those students. Aside from that we had also attended a seminar about the proper use of language. Of course as a teacher it is a must that you should be fluent in speaking and use correct grammar so that your student will understand you. This will be done before we are deployed at the high school department. I also prepare myself or condition myself not to sleep early because I already know that as a practice teacher I already encounter a sleepless night and I also prepare myself to spend more time in reading books more especially in the field of my specialization. This is the best way to do because whenever I will execute I have already knowledge about my topics. I need also to condition myself in facing the different students.
I know that before we are deployed at Cagayan National High School, I have already these feelings of fear and nervous because I already face the reality that I will be going to experience the essence of becoming a teacher. Ive told to myself that it's time for me now to be getting ready and be prepared for all the things that might happen when I execute the lessons. I already expect that this is now the time to experience sleepless nights for the preparation of lesson plans and visual materials and of course to prepare myself to master my lessons before I execute it.
I also expected that I am not so good in executing my lesson so I expect that the results of my evaluations will not be that too high. Even the intelligent person is not so good in executing their lessons because they are always fear that will come out while executing. During my first execution I feel nervous to stand on front of the students. Theres a lot of comments that come out to my cooperating teacher like my weaknesses, and my cooperating teacher told me that I need to accept it because it helps me to become a good teacher in the
future. I already expect that Im not good in executing my lesson that is why I know already that some of my evaluation sheet is not so good. I considered this practicum as a preparation for my future career that's why I am open to any comments that my cooperating teacher will tell me in order
to develop my strengths as a future teacher. I also expect that a public school is different from a private school; I know that in a public school the students have different characteristics, as a practice teacher you need to deal with them and accept them if who they are and you need to adopt their lifestyle.
Teaching is something that takes place only when learning does. No matter what the teacher is doing in her class, if her students are not learning something significant, she is not teaching. When the student fails, the teacher fails more; and when the student has not learned, the teacher has not taught =Unknown= With my stay in Cagayan National High School from November until February with more than twenty demo teachings, I can say that student best learn when they are properly motivated to do certain tasks especially to Biology and Physics wherein they would even get absent just to skip with the subject where they feel bored. They want activities that will let them move. It is true that when a student not learned, the teacher has not taught because when I gave evaluation to my students and majority of them did not pass, I feel disgusted for it speaks about how did I taught them. It simply means that I did not teach them even just a little bit of the topic. While it is true that while teaching, the students are as if they are all listening attentively to you, but only to find out that still they did not understand the discussion. Teaching and learning is a process in such a way that there is no teaching if there is no learning and the same time there is no learning if there is no teaching. This is a process wherein there should be a give and take relationship between the students and the teachers so that learning will transpire. This would only means that if there is no learning that happen inside the classroom, blame should not only be on the teachers because the teacher really exert effort to make learning be possible to all students despite having a diverse learners. It has also something to do on how students cooperate to all the activities that the teacher ask them to do. So, there must also be a sense of cooperation on the part of the students to have an interactive learning environment. The school is a center for learning activities. It should be located in a place where children are safe from danger and free from noise or any other form of destruction that may
disturb them while classes are going on. It should also provide students with services that will enhance their educational program. The Laboratory School where I had my practice teaching is really a school of high quality and has a good structure which is really a good avenue to receive a quality education. The services are adequate and the size of the whole compound is enough to make learning possible.
The Classrooms are conducive to learning. They are clean, orderly, properly lighted and wellventilated. There are enough chalkboard for lesson presentations and written exercises on the board. The teachers as well as the students are very creative and resourceful where in they decorated it with pictures and other materials appropriate to the current activity that the school is celebrating. These bulletin boards also be repaved every month and was graded by those evaluators for the search for the cleanness classroom. Teaching tasks includes the specifics. In some of my teachings at Cagayan National High School, I was so nervous because I think that in sometimes my cooperating teacher let me to handle his class because he have a important things that he will going to attend . But it is just alright with me for he gave me the chance to experience how to act like a teacher without any companion inside the classroom. In teaching, you need to prepare yourself in everything specially your voice so that you will still deliver your lesson to the utmost of your ability. Despite the fact that I really pressured in many things I did not affect my demo teachings Cagayan National High School. There are some instances that my cooperating teacher let me to write on the blackboard even if the fact that my writings are not good and the students did not understand it. As a pre-service teacher, we were required to accomplish 20 executions or demo teachings to be evaluated and graded by our cooperating teacher. These 21 executions was a requirement for the realization of the final demonstration. . All teaching tasks would not be made effective and efficient without all the interactive tasks. Interactive activities allowed me to learn more about my students characteristics and behaviors that influenced their acquisition of knowledge and skills. These also gave me the opportunity to apply and discover strategies in motivating them to learn. Based on their Calendar of Activities, the students have a lot of activities that they need to be attended. These activities would in somehow help the students to develop their skills and talents and also the confidence to be with the group. During their vacant time, some of the students aside from having their snacks and lunch they are busy preparing their presentations in the different activities, like the Celebration of Christmas and also the different presentations of the different club in their school like the English club, they prepared a drama entitled Miss. Saigon. The students have their own presentation among these activities that is why they are sometimes utilizing their vacant periods in having different practices. During their activity the students enhance their ability or skills to participate with the different events.
Another is, the students stay at the Library to research and do their assignments especially those who do not have books and some would need to attend to their remedial classes wherein this remedial class is designed for those students who had attended official businesses and for those who experienced difficulty in the subject matter. I actually have four sections where in two of which are second year and two fourth years. As regards to the strength of all the classes that I handled, I can say that there are sections who are very active and they are some not even do something in relation to do their
activities and I observed that the atmosphere inside the classroom is just alright and majority ofthe students are all very eager to understand and participate in the discussion. I can also see that respect that they giving to me because even though I am just a student teacher, they still gave me the respect that which I think I deserved it most. Some of the qualities of the students that I observed they have a sense of humor. Majority of the students in class are wide readers. They know their limitations and all male students are sports- oriented. Their concern to the others is greatly manifested. As a biology teacher, it is very disappointing to say that many students failed to this subject because there are some concepts in biology that is difficult to understand and it seems that they did not learn something from the teacher. With my stay at Cagayan National High School, I saw some of the reasons why students fail in this subject. It is not really a teacher factor but more on student factor because students are not listening while the discussion is going on. They attend to many things that would destruct their momentum in understanding the topic being discussed by their teacher and they do some unnecessary things and they feel board in the subjects. And I also experienced to teach physics, while teaching this subject I observed that some of the students are hard up to adopt the topic because some of them are not listening and they do some unnecessary things instead of listening. Some of the students are passive and pessimistic, majority is emotionally weak, absenteeism is commonly practiced, majority of the class are aggressive, and a huge number of the students are lazy learners.
Instructional materials is very important in teaching learning process because through this the students learned much when they saw something on the board like printed visual aid or materials. As a teacher you need to present a instructional materials to your students so that the flow of the lesson is good and just place only the gist or the important words in that certain materials so that the teacher will be able to lessen the words that he\she need to say. Manipulating some materials is important because it helps the students to become more attentive and to enhance their ability to think if what the uses of this certain materials present by the teacher. Like in biology class you need to use different materials like microscope a teacher needs to present a real microscope to the student so that they determine what the different parts of it and know how to use it or manipulate it.
Through this I noticed that the students interest of learning is very evident if the teacher use a very catchy instructional materials. And I also noticed that learning is takes place. But they say that a teacher is the best visual aid or instructional materials itself.
