2009 FIS Freestyle World Championships

Selection Criteria
September 25, 2008

1.0 PREAMBLE

The 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships will take place in Inawashiro, Japan, March 2-8, 2009.

The freestyle ski disciplines that will take place during the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships include:

• Men’s & Women’s Single and Dual Moguls

• Men’s & Women’s Aerials
• Men’s & Women’s Ski-Cross
• Men’s & Women’s Half-Pipe

The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association (CFSA) will select athletes to participate in the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski
World Championships based on the selection criteria outlined herein.

2.0 AUTHORITY

The FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships are conducted under rules established by the International Ski
Federation (FIS), the international federation for skiing & snowboarding.

3.0 GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The following guiding principles have been taken into consideration in the development of the 2009 FIS Freestyle
Ski World Championships selection criteria:

• The CFSA’s primary objective is to win medals at the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships;
• The freestyle ski athletes selected to represent Canada in the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World
Championships must demonstrate the ability to win medals.

4.0 KEY DATES

The CFSA must submit a final list of athletes to the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships Organizing
Committee no later than 24 hours after the last FIS World Cup event preceding the FIS World Championships.
5.0 ELIGIBLE COMPETITIONS

a) The CFSA will determine a selection period from which an athlete’s results will be considered for
establishing a ranking so athletes may be selected to the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships
Team.

The selection period for Aerials, Moguls and Skier cross shall be defined as November 1,
2008 to February 22, 2009.

The selection period for Half-Pipe shall be defined as November 1, 2007 to February 22,
2009.

b) Eligible competitions shall be defined as FIS Freestyle World Cup competitions and other competitions
identified by the CFSA.

c) Athlete results from FIS Freestyle World Cup competitions and other competitions identified by the
CFSA held during the selection period will only be considered in the selection of athletes to the 2009 FIS
Freestyle Ski World Championships.

6.0 ELIGIBLE ATHLETES

6.1 Moguls & Aerials

Freestyle ski athletes participating in the Moguls and Aerials disciplines will be considered eligible for selection to
the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships provided they:

• Are a member of the CFSA High Performance Program during the 2008/09 FIS Freestyle World Cup
competition season;
• Are a member in good standing with the CFSA;
• Meet the minimum qualification standards:
o Gaining at least 1.00 point in FIS World Cup competitions (i.e. Top 30 placing) during the
selection period;

6.2 Ski-Cross & Half-Pipe

Freestyle ski athletes participating in the Ski-Cross and Half-Pipe disciplines will be considered eligible for
selection to the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships provided they:

• Are a member in good standing with the CFSA;

• Have paid the CFSA International License Fee.

7.0 QUOTA

The FIS determines the number of athletes that may compete at the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships
for each country participating in the Games.

For the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships, the FIS has established the following quotas:

i) Maximum of four (4) athletes per gender, per event (Moguls and Duals will be considered one
event for the purpose of selection);
ii) Maximum of eighteen (18) athletes per gender;
 iii) Overall maximum team size of 32 athletes (excluding the reigning FIS World Champions);
iv) The reigning FIS World Champions have the right to participate in addition to the quota in the
event they won at the 2007 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships. If however the World
Champion is entered for other events, he/she must be included within the quota and must be
nominated (Single mogul & dual mogul are considered two different events).

The CFSA is not required to fill the quota in any one discipline and reserves the right to select fewer athletes for a
discipline than the FIS Quota may allow.

8.0 ATHLETE NOMINATION PROCEDURES

Eligible freestyle ski athletes will be selected to compete in the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships by
the following procedures:

8.1 General Information

a) Eligible athletes will be ranked by discipline according to gender

(Moguls will have one list for Single and Duals combined);

b) For the purpose of ranking eligible mogul athletes, final placing from single mogul competitions
will be used. If an athlete places in the top 3 in a WC Dual Mogul event, the placing will count.
If they are below top 3 in the final placing of a Dual mogul WC, their place in the qualification run
will count; however, top 3 qualification placing will count as a 4th place.

c) For the purpose of ranking eligible aerial athletes, placing from eligible competitions that are
downgraded, where the Jury has decided to limit the Degree of Difficulty due to weather or other
conditions, will not be considered for ranking purposes.

8.2 Moguls, Aerials, & Skier Cross

a) All eligible mogul, aerial, and skier cross athletes will be ranked on the basis of their best three
(3) OR four (4) FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup placing. The number of placings used from the
selection period will depend on the number of competitions per discipline held during the
selection period. The table below will apply to determine the number of placings used when
ranking the athletes for each discipline:

If 6 competitions or more  4 counting placings from the selection period (2008-09 FIS WC season)
If 5 competitions or less  3 counting placings from the selection period (2008-09 FIS WC season)

b) Rankings will be calculated according to the sum of each athlete’s three (3) or four (4) best
placing. For example, if 6 mogul competitions or more are held during the selection period and
an athlete places 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 10th in his/her four (4) best events, he or she will have a sum
of 16 points. If 5 competitions or less are held, that same athlete would have a sum of 6 points
(i.e. 1st+2nd+3rd);

c) The athlete with the lowest sum will be ranked 1st and so forth.

d) Single and Dual Mogul course length must be a minimum of 200 meters (according the TD
report) for the placing to be eligible
 e) The table below will determine the number of dual mogul WC placings eligible to count when
ranking mogul athletes:

If 6 competitions or more  Up to a maximum of 2 duals WC placings will be used for ranking

If 5 competitions or less  Up to a maximum of 1 dual WC placing will be used for ranking

f) In the event of a tie in the rankings, the athlete with the highest placing from the selection
period will be ranked ahead. In the event that the athletes are still tied, the athlete with the next
highest placing will be ranked ahead. This process will be continued until the tie has been
broken. If necessary, results from the 2007-08 FIS World cup season will be used.

g) The number of athletes the CFSA can select is restricted by the quotas established by the FIS as
outlined in Section 7.0 above.

8.3 Half-Pipe

a) Eligible half-pipe athletes will be ranked on the basis of their best 4 placings from eligible
competitions held in 2007-08 & 2008-09 (prior to February 22, 2009). A minimum of two
(2) placings must come from the 2008-09 season;

b) Eligible half-pipe competitions will include;

i) 2008 & 2009 Winter X-Games (Super Pipe)
ii) 2007-08 & 2008-09 FIS Freestyle Ski World cup season
iii) 2008 US Freeskiing Open (Half Pipe)

c) The athlete with the lowest sum will be ranked 1st and so forth.

d) In the event of a tie in the rankings, the athlete with the highest placing will be ranked
ahead. In the event that the athletes are still tied, the athlete with the next highest
placing will be ranked ahead (From WC FIS HP competitions only). This process will be
continued until the tie has been broken. If the tie can not be broken by this process, a
coin toss will be used to break the tie.

e) The number of athletes the CFSA can select is restricted by the quotas established by the
FIS as outlined in Section 7.0 above.

9.0 EXTRA-ORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES

9.1 Injuries sustained during the Selection Period

In the event that an eligible athlete is injured during the selection period and unable to compete at
eligible events, the following provisions will be made to permit that athlete to be ranked for selection to
the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships.

For an eligible athlete to be considered for extra-ordinary circumstances, his or her physical injury must
be medically documented by a physician mutually agreed upon by the CFSA and the athlete, or his or her
representative.

Furthermore, when an athlete has obtained the results to be named to the World Championship team,
but has not competed in the last 1 or 2 events of the selection period due to injury; the athlete must
obtain a written statement from the CFSA medical staff stating that the athlete may be in a position to
return to full training by the start of the World Championship Training period. Failure to receive the
 support of the medical team will result in the athlete not being named to the team. (Objective: If it is not
reasonable for the athlete to expect to be able to return from injury by the start of training, they will not
be named to the team).

A) Mogul, Aerial, and Skier cross unable to compete due to extra-ordinary circumstances within the
selection period (November 1, 2008 – February 22, 2009):

When there are 6 or more WC events in the selection period:

i) An athlete who has 6 placings within the selection period will not be able to use results
from the previous season.
ii) An athlete with only 5 placings from the selection period may use the most recent WC
placing from the previous season. (If there are only 5 WC’s in the selection period (3 will
count), they may not use placings from the previous season)
iii) An athlete with only 4 placings from the selection period may use the most recent 2 WC
placings from the previous season. (If there are only 5 WC’s in the selection period (3
will count), they may use only the most recent placing from the previous season)
iv) A minimum of two (2) placings must be used from the selection period (November 1,
2008 – February 22, 2009) in order to obtain a ranking.

B) Half-Pipe Athletes:

i) Extra-ordinary circumstances will not be considered for Half-Pipe athletes.

9.2 Athlete Withdrawal after Selection Period Concludes

i) In the event that a selected athlete is unable to compete in the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World
Championships after the entry deadline, the CFSA will replace that athlete with the next
highest ranked eligible athlete as defined herein who meets the event and gender quotas.

10.0 Unforeseen Circumstances

In situations where an unforeseen circumstance(s) (as determined by the CFSA) does not allow the Team
selection criteria to be fairly and objectively applied, the CFSA reserves the right to rule on an appropriate
course of action.

If the criteria results in fewer athletes than the quota allows, CFSA reserves the right to adjust the criteria
to include additional athletes.

11.0 APPEALS

CFSA selections for the 2009 FIS Freestyle Ski World Championships may be appealed in accordance with the
procedures set out in the CFSA Appeals Protocol.
