6,000 BUFFALO AREA RESIDENTS RING IN THE NEW YEAR BY JOINING THE IT CAN WAIT MOVEMENT TO HALT TEXTING WHILE DRIVING
AT&Ts John Poissant inspires community to make their number one resolution in the New Year to never text and drive again BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan., 7, 2013 John Poissant heard the call from AT&T* to spread the word about the dangers of texting and answered by personally getting six-thousand members of the community to take the pledge to never text and drive again. John reached his personal goal by attending local anti-text events sponsored by AT&Ts It Can Wait program and by spreading the message at community events held in the Buffalo area. Anywhere the public gathered, like a homecoming game or at firehouse with first responders, I was there to urge the public to take the pledge and to encourage others to work with us to make texting and driving as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving, said John Poissant, store manager AT&T Orchard Park. When asked if he had a personal experience related to an accident involving texting and driving, John said he was one of the lucky ones. But over the last few weeks he has heard too many sad stories. Usually someone will come up to me and thank me and AT&T for trying to stop texting and driving. Its amazing to me how many people have been affected by this distraction or know someone who has been affected. John isnt giving up the cause in 2013 and continues to find new ways to urge the public to make taking the pledge their number one New Years resolution. Start the New Year off right by taking the pledge and encourage your family and friends to do the same, he added. Research shows someone is killed or injured once every five minutes on average in a crash that happens while a driver is texting and driving.1

I applaud Johns efforts to educate the public especially younger drivers on this dangerous driving distraction, said Robert Holliday, vice president and general manager, AT&T Upstate New York. I know John will continue to spread the word in 2013 and I urge everyone to take a moment and go to the It Can Wait website and take the pledge. No text is worth dying for. It Can Wait is a national movement tapping into the power of social media and personal networks to make texting and driving as unacceptable as drinking and driving. It urges drivers to visit www.ItCanWait.com, where they can pledge not to text and drive, and share their pledge with others via Twitter (#ItCanWait) and Facebook. It also offers a host of educational resources and information on the issue including a documentary, The Last Text, featuring families impacted by texting and driving accidents that has been viewed more than 3 million times.
