Introduction

Nowadays, almost all people suffer from the high cost and continuous

increasing of prices of all the commodities especially in our country, even the

garments that we have in the market. That is why people, especially those who

belong in the class C, seek for alternatives that are more affordable. Divisoria is

one of the places where people can find the most affordable outfit that they can

buy. But facing the reality, high percentage of the garments sold in places like

these do not have the high quality standard that buyers are looking for.

Printed T-shirts, which is the main topic of this study, also stumbles upon

its increasing price, which is why we have come up with a product that can

replace with other shirts that we have in the market, the hand painted glow in

the dark t-shirts.

Universities like FEU have their university shirts or organizational shirts,

which is sometimes used by the students as their uniforms. Our business is

targeting this opportunity for us to give them a uniquely designed t-shirts that will

surely be appreciated by the students. In addition to this, we also aim to create

our exceptional hand painted designed t-shirts for some call centers who conduct

events and all year round and some mall companies in the vicinity of Silang .

• HISTORY OF FABRIC PAINTING

Humans have been painting on fabric for thousands of years, basically

since people started twisting and weaving fibers together to make the first

fabrics. Techniques that were used to decorate the body began to be applied to

the earliest fabrics that were developed. Two basic methods emerged: coloring

(directly applying an image with color to the fabric) and patterning (painting or

printing with resists in patterns and then coloring the fabric).

The continent of Asia has a long history of decorating fabrics. Printing

blocks have been discovered that date back to around 3000 BC! By 327 BC

when Alexander the Great invaded India, colorfully printed and painted fabrics

were commonly found. As trade routes began to develop, these beautifully

patterned Indian fabrics were traded throughout Asia, Egypt and Greece. In the

second century AD they made their way to Europe and Africa. At the same time

in China, beautiful block printing on fabric was taking place. The Chinese

introduced resist and stencil techniques to Japan. The Japanese developed this

art into beautiful forms of patterning on fabric. In Peru there have also been

found some very early examples (around 200 BC) of resist techniques. Similar

techniques were developing into unique forms in these different parts of the world

and have evolved into what we know today as batik, tie-dye and shibori.

Production Concept

Our business conceptualized a production enterprise that will be the

producer of hand painted designed T-shirts in Far Eastern University, and for

some call centers in the country. We plan to create the products not for retail

purposes but as a wholesale supply catering to the needs of the targeted market

for their printed shirt uniforms.

Nowadays, oriental and hip designs are popular especially with the

teenagers, students and the young. We come up with this product believing that

we can supply the needs of consumers to have more modernized and likeable

hand-painted glow in the dark shirt designs.

Although we are new in this kind of business, we still can promise the best

outcome and produce very good quality hand painted T-shirts that can be used in

events, organizational uniforms, school uniforms and other more occasions.

The price will be based on the cost used to create the product. Our hand-

painted T-shirts will surely compete in the market in terms of pricing but we are

confident that ours is a product that is worth to be paid for.

1. Choosing and preparing the Screen. There are two types of screens,

those with aluminum frame and those with the wooden frame. Screens

with aluminum frame are easier to use than screens with wooden frames.

Another factor is the mesh count. A higher mesh count means the fibres of

the mesh are closer together and a lower count means the fibres are more

loosely woven, so more ink can pass through the screen. Once you have

bought your screen, the first important thing to do is wash it out with cold

water and a degreasing agent. Getting any grease out helps the emulsion

to bond with the fabric which gives you a crisper stencil. Also important is

to understand the orientation of your screen. The flat “back” of the screen

which sits on the printing surface is called the “print side” or “paper side”

and the “front” of the screen, recessed inside the lip of the frame, is called

the “squeegee side.”

2. Prepare the Artwork. What are needed in this step are the original

artwork and the transparency film. When preparing artwork to be burned

to the screen (to create the stencil), work in black and white only — grey

tones and the subtleties of photographic images will not produce a

workable stencil. If you start with a photo, reduce the information to a line

drawing, or apply a filter or halftone screen. Once the artwork is prepared,

print or photocopy it onto transparent film to produce the screen stencil. It

Graffi-TEE
Feasibility Study for T-Shirt Printing
2nd Semester 2008-2009
Far Eastern University
Institute of Accounts Business and Finance
26

is very important that the black areas printed on the transparency are

completely opaque, so hold it up to the light and make sure all the black

lines are totally dense.

3. Creating the stencil. This is the most intensive step in the screen printing

process. The first thing to do, after your screen is degreased and

completely dry, is to coat the screen in emulsion. Emulsion is the

photosensitive goop that will make the stencil on the screen. In areas

where the emulsion hardens, the screen is blocked so no ink can pass

through. In areas where the emulsion is kept soft and eventually washed

out of the screen, the ink will pass through to produce your print. Emulsion

is hardened by exposure to light, so you need to conduct this entire

process in a darkroom using photosafe lights to see by. Emulsion comes

in two parts, the emulsion proper and a small bottle of sensitiser. Working

by the red, mix the emulsion with the sensitizer. Once sensitized, emulsion

is good for about 3 weeks at room temperature, or about 3 months (tops

— it gets iffy at the end of those 3 months) if refrigerated. Always wear

gloves! When handling emulsion. To coat the screen, you can use a scoop

or can use a squeegee or wallpaper smoother. A scoop coater is a very

easy-to-use trough which holds the emulsion and deposits a nice even,

thin coat on the screen. If you’re using the squeegee or smoother option,

use a spatula to spread a line of emulsion along one end of the screen

Graffi-TEE
Feasibility Study for T-Shirt Printing
2nd Semester 2008-2009
Far Eastern University
Institute of Accounts Business and Finance
27

and then, pressing very firmly with the squeegee, drag the line of emulsion

down or up the screen until it is evenly coated with emulsion. It is very

important to have a thin, even coat of emulsion on the screen,

uninterrupted by drips or blobby areas that could mess up the clarity of

your stencil. You must double coat all in one go while the first coat is still

freshly wet. Leave the coated screen in the dark to dry for at least 2 hours.

The important thing is that the emulsion is completely dry before you

expose your image. No stickiness allowed.

4. Printing. To set up for printing, you need a completely flat table or

counter top with two hinge clamps installed at the far side and a large

piece of acetate or velum (at least 2 feet long — much larger than the

paper or fabric you are printing onto). Tape the acetate down firmly at one

end so that it will not budge. You need it to be perfectly fixed at one end in

order to properly register your print. Fasten the screen into the hinge

clamps with the squeegee side facing up and make sure you can move

the screen into an upright position in the clamps without it falling back

down to the printing surface. Prop the screen up slightly with your roll of

tape and apply a line of ink onto the surface of the screen about 2 inches

above the image to be printed. Flood the image with ink using your

squeegee. Make sure you have the right kind of squeegee for the material

(paper or fabric) on which you are printing. Make sure the acetate is

Graffi-TEE
Feasibility Study for T-Shirt Printing
2nd Semester 2008-2009
Far Eastern University
Institute of Accounts Business and Finance
28

between the printing table and the screen. Lower the screen to the table

surface and print the first copy of the image onto the acetate. Immediately

flood the image with ink to keep it from drying out. Raise the screen to an

upright position in the hinges. Use the acetate to register your image in the

right spot on your shirt or paper by orienting your shirt or paper

underneath the acetate. Remove the acetate and lower the screen onto

your shirt or paper. Print the image by holding the squeegee at about 45

degrees and applying even, strong pressure to pass the ink through the

screen.

5. Drying. Remember that this ink dries to plastic. Any area, however small,

where it dries in the screen will become unusable in the future. In between

each print, flood your image. When you’re done printing, wash the screen

of all ink right away. Mr. Clean can be used to wash out ink (if necessary)

without degrading the emulsion. Screen ink dries very quickly let the

image dry for at least an hour and then iron over top of the image on the

hottest setting for at least 1 full minute. Ironing the ink makes it colour fast

in the wash.

late arrivals to add in the sum of the contribution. With this, our team will come up
with a capital of Php 16,000.00.

• To develop a vision and strategy for employment generation and to

prepare a time bound action for implementation of the same.

• To help increase the employment because the high school graduates can

apply for production works.

• Managerial and higher position applicants can apply as long as they are

competent enough for the position and meet the requirements regardless

of what school they graduated.

• To facilitate manpower planning in key sectors of the economy.

Employment Generation

Poverty is one of the major problems that our country faces today. One

cause of poverty is the growing numbers of unemployed Filipinos. The support of

the government is not enough to lessen the issue of unemployment. The Paint-

Tee will help lessen this problem by providing job opportunities to the people,

most especially to the community of Silang, Cavite.

We are going to recruit, employ and train employees for them to perform

the jobs needed. We are looking forward to help the municipality of Silang, and

the government in maximizing our human resources.

Our company also aims to give emphasis on how our workers will attain

new skills through trainings that they can relate to their independent living, their

preparation for works and maintaining a genuine employment.

Environmental Considerations

Global warming is one of main issues on our environment today. Most of

the pollution came from industries, factories and corporations that use

machineries and equipments. In the Paint-Tee, we will assure that the production

of our t-shirts will not damage or harm the environment. The equipments are

environmental friendly wherein they are used manually, excess paints will not be

disposed, instead it will be mixed with other colors and use it again for painting.

The company makes sure that our garbage’s and other wastes are

properly disposed in a separate area outside the production area.

All the activities that the company will perform are not just about quality

check but also for environmental reasons. We aim to develop and produce

product which do not harm the environment.

Our company is aware on their sense of responsibility in serving the

communities. We are much more focusing on the quality and safety of the

product we produce rather than its quantity. The major goal of our company is to

achieve a good result on what we do.

Our studies focused on satisfying the needs of our dear consumers,

the students, employees, and local citizens and also serve as an instrument to

their consciousness on how to save money for clothing and also the uniqueness,

quality and comfortability. We all know that most of them wanted to have nice and

proper kinds of clothes by buying and using the different trends for “GIMIK’

purposes. Most of the employees, students and especially call center agents they

would prefer using company shirt/org shirts because it is much less cheaper

rather than using much more expensive cloths that can be more useful in other

occasion and it also helps them to be easily recognized that they belong to a

certain company or groups.

POSITIONING STRATEGY

Compare to other printed t-shirts our product is unique because our

design are in a form of hand painting. We position our product as the primary

manufacturer of t-shirts on FEU, and call centers.
