Last June I met with the mission committee of University Congregational Church in Missoula, Mont., where a member proudly showed us his garden. I remembered my trip to Central America, where our hosts proudly showed us their gardens, too, made possible with CWS assistance. We are connected. We all need food. And we need each other. Folks in Missoula may soon start a CROP Hunger Walk to help hungry people plant gardens to feed their families. When we feel the connection, we can do great things together!

Mutua was in the U.S. recently, speaking to groups in Denver, Cleveland and New York City about the continued food crisis and climate-change triggered droughts in the Horn of Africa and the Sahel. But he has also has been reporting good news from ground level. In such challenged regions with a little support, greater awareness, and the right education, supplies and resources even some of the poorest communities are improving their nutrition and food security by growing more diverse, drought-resilient and nutritionally balanced foods, and by using inexpensive micronutrient supplements to bring children back from malnutrition. From the CWS East Africa office, Mutua focuses on emergency preparedness, mitigation and early warning systems, all vital to building resilient communities in the face of potential disasters. He was delighted to meet the people of Estes Park who help support his work in Africa and to walk in his first-ever CROP Hunger Walk.
Many thanks to our Fall CROP Hunger Walk leaders, volunteers and participants! You are making a difference for people in need.
This winter, CWS will have a starring role in the two-part season premiere of the acclaimed PBS documentary series Visionaries. Hosted by award-winning actor Sam Waterston of Law & Order fame, the Visionaries series highlights the stories of nonprofit organizations around the world that are working to make a positive difference in their community and beyond. The CWS Visionaries episodes are expected to air on local public television stations this winter. Check your local listings for time and date, or visit visionaries.org. Want to help ensure that the vital, life-changing work of CWS continues? Host a Visionaries viewing event, large or small, to watch and discuss the program with family, friends and colleagues.
